Science Olympiad

for information

regarding

competition events.

STEM

STEM education is a major component of ASES. Students participate in weekly STEM activities where they explore the four disciplines and learn firsthand how the scientific method can be applied to everyday life. In addition to these activities, students have the opportunity to join two STEM-based clubs where study and prep for competitive competitions.

ASES strongly encourages students to become STEM-literate. Every week students read articles about mind-blowing science and technology breakthroughs. After researching these events, students give brief presentations explaining the events’ concepts and relevance. Doing so not only encourages innovative and creative thinking, but also enables students to make meaningful connections between school, community, work, and global issues!

ASES Biweekly STEM Challenge:

Write It Do It: Students work in pairs. One team member has 10 minutes to describe an object and how to make it. The other team member is given six minutes to build a “production” recreation of the object based on his/her partner’s written instructions.

Balloon Jousting

ASES brings Science Olympiad (SO), the nation’s most exciting K-12 science competition, to Kit Carson! Whether it’s science labs, rocket design, bridge building, using forensics to solve crimes, or building robots, SO has it all! Interested in joining the SO team? See Ms. Rai or visit the ASES room (F1) for more information.

Immerse yourself in the thrill of sports and the excitement of science and technology! Join Kit Carson’s FIRST LEGO League (FFL) team today! Under the direction of Mr. Martine and Mr. Batkin, students design, build, and program a robot from a set of over 1,100 parts and additional motors, sensors, and gears. In competition, the LEGO-based robot completes various tasks during a themed mission. Drop by ASES room F1 for more information on how to join!

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Group Meetings

ASES strives to make learning challenging, engaging, and meaningful for students. During program, students engage in several activities in which they practice group decision-making, cooperation, and reflective listening. While doing so, they learn how to be socially and emotionally competent. A recent favorite is the game Angry Compliments. The objective of this game is to make the opposing player laugh while exchanging compliments in an angry manner. The first person to laugh loses. In this game, students learn to recognize

their own emotional triggers while receiving a boost in self-confidence.

In addition, every Wednesday students have the opportunity to join Ms. DiBasilio in SEL group discussions. During these meetings, students play a variety of games while they develop skills for self-awareness, self-management, self-awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.

ASES Family Trivia!

Educational Lens: Yu-Gi-Oh

What does the game help teach?

Math—Add and subtract life points in every duel Strategic thinking—Think ahead and predict opponent’s

next move Goal setting– Set goals to guide actions Reading—Read to understand what each card can do Test preparation—Requires memorizing the complex set

of rules and paying attention to detail Inventory Management—Keep track of monster, magic,

and trap cards in deck Etiquette—Shake hands after a duel

Several ASES students have shown interest in the Yu-Go-Oh! Card game. After a bit of research, it turns out Yu-Gi-Oh offers quite a bit of educational benefits!

“Yu-Gi-Oh is a very strategic game. It can be fun at times; it can be very challenging. You win, you lose. It’s all fun and games.”

A Request Regarding our School Garden Dear Friends and Family of ASES,

Kit Carson is embarking on a journey to reclaim our garden. The summer has allowed weeds to

tower, branches to fall, and the earth to harden. However, fruit trees still thrive, roses lay dormant,

and jasmine vines cling to the fence. With your help, we hope to make the garden once again a

place of beauty, reflection, and learning.

The following steps are needed to beautify this space:

1. Weeds and brush cleared. Fruit trees pruned.

2. Cardboard covers areas to keep down weeds

3. Free Mulch picked up at SMUD by parent and student volunteers. Volunteers should

bring their own pitch forks or shovels.

4. Students help spread mulch over cardboard to inhibit weeds and beautify space.

5; X raised beds of wood are constructed and installed in garden

6. Simple watering system is put in place with automatic timer

7. Soil and seeds bought and planting begins!

We hope that parents/adult family members will assist in the first step as it requires using weed whackers, wheel barrows, and hedge clippers. We are also looking for individuals who have experience in:

carpentry to make raised beds Watering systems and maintenance

The other steps will be largely done by ASES and leadership students.

This project will begin soon to start the clearing. Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Jed Larsen

Leadership Teacher, Kit Carson Middle/High School

Health and Wellness

Social Emotional Learning

October is Prevention

Month. Students will

learn social emotional

learning techniques to

prevent bullying,

smoking, drug use and

improve communication

with others.

Make A Family 5K Plan

If your family isn't active, give your-selves about 6-8

weeks to get ready. Find a family "fun run" with a mix of walkers and runners for your

first race.

Post a chart on the fridge so family

members can track their progress and

see the countdown to

the big day.

Literacy Tip-Create a Family Journal

Families members write back and forth in a special

family journals.

Children write entries on what is happening at school,

what they are learning and how they feel.

Parents write back commenting on their children’s entries, ask questions and offer praise and

encouragement.

Whether you run or walk will depend on

how fit your family is, and the age of your

kids. If your goal is to walk the race and

have fun, kids of any

age can take part.

Remember, your real goal is to help your

family fall in love with physical activity and make it a life-long

habit.

When you talk to your family about the 5K, be sure to talk about how it's fun; not that

it's something

they have to do
