Welcome to Algiers

A lgiers capital and chief seaport of Algeria, It is the political, economic, and culturalcentre of the country.

Algiers is built on the slopes of the Sahel Hills, which parallel the Mediterranean Seacoast, and it extends along the Bay of Algiers. The city faces east and north andforms a large amphitheatre of dazzling white buildings that dominate the harbour andthe bay. The city takes its name (Arabic: “The Islands”) from several small islands

that formerly existed in the bay,

The old Turkish, or Muslim, section of

Algiers is built on the upper slopes of thehills and has preserved much of itsarchitectural character of high blank-walledhouses and narrow winding streets. TheMuslim section is dominated by thefortress of the Kasbah (Qa ṣbah),designated a UNESCO World Heritage sitein 1992; it was the residence of the lasttwo Turkish deys, or governors, of Algiers.

was an Algerian religious and military leader

who led a struggle against the French colonialinvasion in the mid-19th century. An Islamicscholar and Sufi who unexpectedly foundhimself leading a military campaign, he built upa collection of Algerian tribesmen that for manyyears successfully held out against one of themost advanced armies in Europe.

Located on a cliff overlooking the Bay of Algiers inAlgeria's capital city, the Notre Dame d'Afrique is a19th century Roman Catholic Church. As thebasilica of Algiers , the Notre Dame d’Afrique (OurLady of Africa) was designed by Jean EugeneFromageau, the chief architect for ecclesiasticalbuildings during French colonial rule. It tookfourteen years to complete the basilica and it wasinaugurated in 1872.

The Test Garden Hamma (French: Jardin d'Essai du Hamma ) is a 58-hectare (140-acre) botanical garden (38 hectares) of gardens and 20 hectares of arboretumlocated in the Mohamed Belouizdad district of Algiers. It was established in 1832 andis now still considered one of the most important botanical gardens in the world.
