The final taxonomy is likely to be used by

researchers (as they identify their areas of

research and plan future work), by funding

agencies like NSF (as they consider their

portfolio and identify priority areas), and by

journal editors (as they describe how submitted

articles align with their journal‘s interests).‖

Hopefully, this taxonomy will go a long way to

help solidify the engineering education research

field. Anyone interested in learning more about

―mapping the field of engineering education

research‖ can attend an ASEE session on this

taxonomy at 1:00 pm on June 23.

If you are not able to attend our breakfast

meeting on the 26th, there is still time to let us

know what is happening by sending a quick

email to either Frank Gourley

[email protected] or to me

[email protected] . Your greetings will

be conveyed to those attending the meeting.

Remember this is the organization that does not

sign you up for a committee, even if you attend.

I hope to see you at the Breakfast Meeting in

Atlanta!

News from the Flock – Spring 2013 We had a great response from the recent request for news sent to Fellows by email. Below are excerpts of those for your reading pleasure.

Joe Shaeiwitz has retired from the chemical engineering department at West Virginia University after 29 years. Anticipating failure at retirement, Joe and his wife Terry are relocating to Auburn, AL, where he will be joining the chemical engineering department at Auburn University in a teaching-only position.

My news is that I retired at the beginning of July 2012 and we moved to a small "farm" with a barn, pond, and ~6 acres nestled between two mountain ridges in Catawba, VA in November. We love being in the country with cows for our nearest neighbors but we are close enough to Blacksburg (Virginia Tech) and Roanoke to have all the amenities (and health care professionals!) we need. We are also only a few hours from grandchildren in NC so that we can visit and be useful when called upon. Don and I volunteer once a week in the horticulture therapy program at the state mental hospital in Catawba and are becoming active in the UU

church in Blacksburg. The rest of our time is spent gardening and mowing now that spring is finally here. Post-academic life is good! Susan M. Blanchard, Retired: Professor and Founding Dean, Whitaker College of Engineering, Florida Gulf Coast University

My wife and I will be taking a Russian river cruise, St. Petersburg to Moscow, May 30-June 14. I'll try to send you more complete information and a picture or two during the first week of June. Hope to see you in Atlanta later in June. Best wishes, John Prados "Updated E-Mail Address for John Prados: Fellows wishing to contact John Prados should use his new e-mail address, <[email protected]>. His old address ([email protected]) will shortly be retired."

Michael O’Hair participated in the Greater Lafayette Honor Flight on April 29, 2013. This program honors WWII and Korean War Veterans by flying them to Washington D.C. for the day to visit the WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War Memorials and Arlington Cemetery for the changing of the guard, plus other stops. There were 80 Veterans and 80 Guardians and staff on the April 29, flight—chartered 737 from the Purdue University Airport. Michael served as a Guardian for his father. Twenty-four of the Veterans were in wheelchairs. It was a memorable and emotional day. Michael‘s father, Gale O‘Hair, served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater as a radio technician and forward observer in Patton‘s Third Army. Michael was about 2

months old when his father at the age of 18 was shipped overseas in 1944. His buddies called him the ―the kid with a kid.‖ Over 16 million served in WWII, but less than 1.4 million are still living. We are losing our WWII Veterans at the rate of approximately 680 a day. Honor Flights originate from all over the country. Michael recommends that all WWII Veterans should have the opportunity to participate in the Honor Flight program. More information can be found at http://www.honorflight.org

I am currently the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the University of Florida. Regards. Win Phillips

I am writing this from Torino, Italy, and that is my news. I am teaching a study-abroad program that started for the Iowa State University students with a three-credit spring course that was a combination of sustainable engineering topics (new course taught by a team of three ISU professors) and an introduction to computations in materials (an existing course that I teach). At Torino I will complete the second course mentioned while two Politechnico Di Torino professors complete the sustainability course, including plant tours at participating industries in Torino. This is the first year in what we hope will be an annual event. Larry Genalo

Jane M Fraser, chair of the Department of Engineering at Colorado State University-Pueblo, spent the month of April 2013 in Vietnam as part of a four person team evaluating a USAID program to improve engineering education in that country. She visited two universities and one vocational college and was very impressed by the high quality of the professors and the educational programs.

Ron Barr: I was delighted to be elected a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) this December 2012. It occasioned me to realize that many good friends in ASEE are also good friends in ASME. On another note, I served on the selection committee for the 2013 ASEE Lifetime Achievement Award. No award was granted this year because there were not enough nominations (only one) to make the selection process competitive. So, I would encourage ASEE Fellows to consider nominating someone for this award next year. There are many good qualified candidates amongst our ranks.

I'm still teaching. I'd like to think they keep me on because I'm good but I suspect the real reason is I'm inexpensive. Class is full for the fall already. I had a granddaughter graduate from a Methodist Seminary a few days ago and she has already been assigned a small church in Pennsylvania. Her graduation ceremony was held in the National Cathedral. I only hope her sermons will be shorter than the commencement address. Life has been kind to Dot and me. Paul Torgensen

Tom and I did a lot of traveling again this year. We did an Adriatic cruise last October, stopping at Rome, Venice, Dubrovnik, Split and Malta. We just returned from a river cruise to Netherlands and Belgium, stopping for a few days in Ireland on the return. Last summer, I attended my 50 year graduation reunion at MIT. The MIT alumni magazine, Technology Review, did a write up of my career in the May 2013 issue. Best wishes to all. Joan Gosink

It‘s been a busy few months since the last newsletter. There have been a few trips to New Jersey and elsewhere for IEEE business plus one to Texas for a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Danish Immigrant Museum. This Texas trip was a cool deal because Dorothy is the board member and ―gets‘ to attend meetings while I take it easy or play tourist. Our big trip of the spring was three weeks in Vietnam and Laos. We saw some beautiful scenery and met some interesting people and ate some delicious food. We also got a different view of what they call the American War. Their narrative was somewhat different from ours, of course, and seemed to take some liberties with the facts, but it was interesting. The big news, though, is that we completed the publication of Lyle’s Laws, a compilation of the columns I wrote for The Bent of Tau Beta Pi over the past ten years. If any Fellows are interested in having a copy, it is

available at any major on-line bookstore or check the Tau Beta Pi website, http://tbp.org/pubs/LylesLaws.cfm for an autographed copy. I hope to see a lot of fellow Fellows in Atlanta. Lyle Feisel

I have a new book out; it's about teaching a service-learning engineering design course. The title is "Building Playgrounds, Engaging Communities: Creating Safe and Happy Places for Children" and was published by LSU Press. http://lsupress.org/books/detail/building-playgrounds-engaging-communities/. Best, Marybeth Lima, LSU, Baton Rouge, LA

I have one piece of good news to share: I was elected a Corresponding Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh this Spring. I attended the induction ceremony at the Society's headquarters in Edinburgh on May 20. Thanks, and best wishes, Vince Poor, Princeton

Greetings. I am herein enclosing a brief write up on my activities that you may want to consider for inclusion in the upcoming Fellows Newsletter. Also I am including a picture. The picture shows - Auburn students and the locals who worked on a Solar Power Project for a Handicapped Center in Rural India. Thanks for all the great work you are doing for us through the Newsletter. Regards, P.K.Raju

More from P.K.: I spent eight weeks in India during November – December 2012 as a part of my sabbatical in the fall semester of 2012. I visited the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore; the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (my alma mater); the Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology , New Delhi; and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University ,Kakinada. I also gave lectures on teaching engineering courses through multi-media case studies and serious games. I am currently working on developing serious games to teach engineering concepts

through an NSF /STTR grant partnering with Toolwire, an educational service provider in California, and other colleagues at Auburn. Please visit our LITEE /Toolwire booth (#705) at the upcoming ASEE

conference in Atlanta to review the game we developed. Through the Laboratory for Innovative Technology and Engineering Education (LITEE), an NSF /industry-funded lab which I direct, 12 students from Auburn spent eight weeks of the summer 2012 semester in Madras conducting research along with students from IIT Madras. This US- India Research program provided students with rich cultural and research experience working on a problem, and transforming the results into a case study that showcases global engineering issues. This program is funded by the International Division of NSF. P.K. Raju-Auburn University

I am now retired as Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. My new address is: Paul S. Peercy, Dean Emeritus, 2 La Pointe Terrace, Madison, WI 53719, Ph 608.658.3577.

Your Editor‘s travels lately included a week at Emerald Isle, NC in January; followed by a two-week cruise around the Southern Caribbean in February; skiing in March; a Canaan Valley, WV, trip in early April; a week on the banks of the New River in the mountains of NC in late April; and Memorial Day weekend he spent on an annual (35th year) Canoe the New trip in northwest North Carolina followed by a high school class reunion. (Not saying which one!) In between travels, he has completed the landscaping of his yard, including the construction of a potting bench. Lately, he is spending more time in the wood shop making items for galleries and craft shows. He and Genene continue to host, weekly, a group of ‗painters‘ in their watercolor studio. Frank Gourley
