Trustee’s Corner Fellow D9ers, I hope everyone is having a great start to 2013! As I reflect back on being the District 9 Trustee for the past year, some of the most memorable moments have involved both leadership training and getting to know all the D9 chapter leaders. One of my goals this year has been to enhance the District 9 leadership experience. In order to accomplish this goal I worked with ASDA Vice President Ben Youel to develop a district cabinet. The cabinet will consist of four appointed positions (Legislative Chair, Newsletter Editor, Secretary and Treasurer) and applications will be due during the week of Annual Session. District cabinet positions will be a great way to enhance your leadership if you’re looking to get involved outside of your local chapter or even if you’re looking to progress in to national ASDA positions. If you are in fact interested in national leadership positions with ASDA, I highly encourage you to reach out to current leaders to find out what positions fits you best. On that note, I am excited to announce that the ASDA Board of Trustees recently appointed six D9ers to national leadership positions for 2013-2014. Way to represent District 9! ISSUE NO. 1, FEBRUARY 2013

Having the opportunity to visit with my fellow trustees this year, I truly believe we have the best ASDA district out there.  We have an awesome group of chapter leaders that work hard to make their respective chapters successful—and at the same time, making District 9 stand out because of their hard work.  So as my time as trustee winds down, I want to thank all the District 9 leaders and members for allowing me to represent you—it has been a blast!

District 9 Meeting Recap

A MEETING IN THE MOUNTAINSStudent leaders and members from each ASDA Chapter in Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas flocked to Breckenridge, Colorado for the annual District 9 Meeting. They took advantage of the

beautiful scenery by skiing and snowboarding during the day, then took care of business with meetings in the evening with presentations from special guests.

Both national ASDA Vice Presidents, Alex Barton and Ben Youel, attended to share ways to improve local ASDA chapters. Alex presented on how to work with administration and engage

predentals, while Ben presented on the importance of branding your chapter. Dr. Ryan Dulde (former ASDA Speaker of the House) talked about how to manage and save money.

As we embarked on a new year with new goals and new faces, Baylor College of Dentistry’s ASDA chapter was excited for all our upcoming events.

We kicked off the new year by bringing in some friendly competition with a sand volleyball social hosted at Sandbar Cantina and Grill. What a better way to break the ice than a little “bump, set, spike?” We had a great turn out from the D1s sprinkled with D2s, 3s and 4s. Several people showed what kind of skills they have outside of school and inside of a court. It was a great way to show first years that you can still have fun in dental school!

Three weeks into the school year and August came to a close. After Labor Day, school kicked into high gear. In September, we hosted our annual Wax & Relax to help D1’s prepare for their first waxing practical. Upperclassmen spent time after school to answer any questions and provide tips and tricks to get those line angles looking perfect!

We also held our annual Vendor Fair. Vendor Fairs provide students an opportunity to speak with representatives from dental associations, dental instrumentation and product companies.

We then geared up to host our 2nd annual Golf Tournament on November 3rd. We had a great turn out from faculty and students and were so excited to see the enthusiasm and friendly competition!

The students of University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine are fortunate to have auto-enrollment from local sponsors. This means that our events are open to everyone. Because of this we are able to host successful lunch and learns once a month and offer our students to learn about aspects of dentistry from organizations and businesses they me become apart of in the future. Another benefit of auto-enrollment is that we have plenty of volunteers at our community events and are able to reach a wide portion of our community that can benefit from dental students and oral health education.

We are lucky to have a strong fundraising committee and had raised much of our funds early in the year. This allowed us to send many of our members to national ASDA events throughout the year, a vital ingredient to teach our future ASDA Chapter leaders at our school.

Students enjoy social gatherings at a local pub that allows for networking with the different dental classes and even the advanced standing students. The goal at our chapter is to expose everyone to the benefits of organized dentistry, and allow them to see first hand how easy it is to make changes within their very own career.

This year at UTSD we have made great strides in our efforts to become the best chapter we can be. To facilitate this, in August 2012 we expanded our executive council to a total of 24 officers to streamline responsibilities and allow our chapter to accomplish more. Our achievements this year include a greatly expanded chapter website, more community service opportunities and increased communication with the student body and other UTSD organizations, to name a few.

In September we held our second annual ASDA Week, which included a lunch and learn presented by Dr. Adam Shisler (ASDA Past President), a school supply drive, an ice cream social and our annual Girls' Arm Wrestling Tournament, which is always a hit. Our officers also helped launch a new SPEA chapter at our school, whose first meeting was attended by over 100 students and the Dean.

Our chapter has made terrific use of social media for outreach purposes this year. Our new UTSD ASDA Facebook page keeps the student body updated on chapter activities and national ASDA news. Our chapter website (toofdoctor.com) now allows vendors to register for lunch and learns or our annual vendor fair online. Additionally, multiple members, including newly appointed ASDA Editor-in-Chief Katie Sowa, have written articles for national ASDA publications this year.

We held five community outreach events this fall, including a fundraiser for cancer research during the "Movember" mustache-growing month. Our Movember activities raised over $1,400 and ended with a professional barber shaving the mustaches of the Dean and multiple faculty members. This event drew the attention of a Houston TV station, which featured our school and chapter on the evening news!

Many events are being planned for the spring, including our annual vendor fair and a PAC Week to educate students on dental political advocacy. We're also excited to have increased revenues compared to years past, allowing us to send more members to national conferences than before. UTSD will be represented by 12 students at annual session in Atlanta, and we intend to send record numbers of attendees to future meetings as well!

We're all excited to see our chapter continue to grow and are looking forward to working to make District 9 the best in ASDA!

Exciting things are going on at our local ASDA chapter. The executive committee and subcommittees have worked diligently to plan and execute events like the summer volleyball tournament, the U.S. Open-Wide golf tournament, our fall vendor fair “DentFest”, OHI and screenings at an underprivileged high school for the Oral B Crest Challenge. In the fall, upperclassmen mentored first years with events like “Wax and Relax” to help them transition into the rigors of dental school. We also teamed up with sponsors to host several happy hours at local restaurants. In addition, we made an original song and music video to enter the ADPAC Video Contest and promote our ADPAC Membership Drive.

One of our biggest events is a pre-dental simulation course held bi-annually that draws prospective students nationally. The students are immersed in the life of a dental student from waxing teeth, to pouring models, drilling and filling plastic teeth, and more for a day. We also inaugurated a new event called “Pre-Dental Day” that focused on the admissions process with presentations from the dean of admissions and Kaplan and ended with mock interviews.

Our goal as a chapter is to make sure our students are up to date on important issues in dentistry while also providing opportunities to advance their education and career.  In order to make this goal happen, we are constantly looking for new vendors/speakers for Lunch and Learns, reaching out to the Oklahoma Dental Association, and disseminating information through our newsletters, blog, and facebook page. No more evident to this goal is the creation of www.ouasda.com.  The idea of a website for our chapter came up at meetings over the past year, but it was not until the generous help of our sponsors that it became a reality.  2012-2013 has been a great year of growth and development, and the future is only looking brighter!

The UTHSCSA chapter had an exciting start to the school year, electing 13 officers that have been hard at work ever since.

In July, we held our Welcome Back Wine Social held at Zinc Wine Bar on the Riverwalk where a few lucky students walked away with raffle prizes of Oral B Smart Series toothbrushes and whitening kits, a perfect way to remove any residual red wine stains! We continued the fall semester with bi-monthly lunch and learns having record turn outs due to the presenters, topics, and the soon talked about catered food varieties.

On the philanthropy front, we entered in the Crest-Oral B Challenge with our first event being a Haven for Hope Halloween carnival. Activities were set up on the soccer fields located on Haven for Hope’s campus where children and women residents could easily walk over to enjoy the fun.  Residents were able to enjoy the bounce house, face paintings, pumpkin toss, sugar-free candy, gift bags of toothbrushes and toothpaste, and of course some OHI. In December, we had a “Brown Bag Giveaway” where 100+ gift bags were filled with Healthy holiday essentials for students to pick up and hand out to someone in need as they headed home for the holidays.

This spring we again have a full schedule of lunch and learns lined up as well as a few dinner presentations for the upperclassmen. In February, we will be hosting our annual Pre-Dental Summit and gearing up for our first ever Legislative Week promoting ADPAC, DENPAC, and general legislative awareness prior to State Lobby Day held in conjunction with the TDA in Austin, TX. In March, we have a full house for our Vendor Fair and Trivia Night and look forward to adding to the record fundraising done this year with the sale of our ASDA scrubs and fleeces. We pair up again with the TDA in May, forming a Hospitality Committee to volunteer during TDAs Annual Session. To top off a great year, we look forward to joining the San Antonio New Dentist Committee and District Dental Society in hosting the Senior Signing day followed by a Cocktails and Casino Night at the Hyatt on the Riverwalk.

Hopefully, all of these events will ultimately result in the transition of 100% of our soon-to-be graduates to a lifelong active membership in the tripartite.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the District 9 Meeting , Lobby Day, and Annual Session!

IMAGINE the hardest few semesters of dental school.

Now imagine responding to and sending roughly 20 emails a day, googling the words “dental”, “dentistry”, and “dental student” for relevant news pieces, and writing blog posts - all during those hard semesters.

Managing school, life, and the ASDA Blog

By: Katie Sowa(Houston, ’15)

When I originally applied for the Electronic Editor of the ASDA blog, Mouthing Off, I knew the next year would be incredibly exciting and very busy. Since this was a new position, the first few months were really busy defining my role in conjunction with the ASDA staff. My responsibilities as the Electronic Editor include managing blog posts, brainstorming ideas, recruiting authors, maintaining the blog calendar, and writing blog posts as needed. I also took on a story for each print publication to stay in the loop with editing for print.

Since I had previous experience with WordPress, the logistics behind the blog were relatively simple (though I could use some work in the resizing images department). My biggest challenge was recruiting authors. How was I- a first year dental student in Houston- supposed to incorporate ideas from across the country? Fortunately, the entire Editorial Board helped in the recruitment process and by late last summer, the blog calendar was packed with content until October. I was then able to focus my efforts on editing the actual content of the posts to ensure there were an adequate number of links, correct grammar, and maintaining AP style as in our print publications.

Other than daily tasks, serving on the Editorial Board requires three trips to Chicago for meetings and extra responsibilities at the National Leadership Conference and Annual Session. In addition to in-person meetings, the Editorial Board participates in numerous conference calls to discuss a variety of issues (no pun intended). All of these are very time consuming to the non-ASDA eye.

Serving as the Electronic Editor is very rewarding in more ways than one. Of course I have the chance to fly to Chicago a few times during the year, but more importantly I’ve been able to build virtual relationships with a number of ASDA members across the country. These relationships have helped me to understand dental school life outside my personal bubble in Houston.

Most importantly, serving as an ASDA National Leader has taught me how to manage my time. The majority of my term as the Electronic Editor has occurred during difficult semesters. Fall semester during 2nd year is notably the hardest semester in Houston, and because of my ability to manage my time wisely, I managed to make higher grades than any previous semester. At the same time, I played in a flag football league, trained for a half marathon, and attended CrossFit three times a week.

No matter if you serve as local ASDA leader or a national ASDA leader, you stand out from your classmates with a passion to lead and serve. It takes talent to plan social, community service, and advocacy activities at the chapter level while undergoing grueling dental school coursework. If you have your classmates wondering how you have time to attend the District 9 meeting, plan a huge vendor fair, and study for three tests next week, you have the same time management skills I’ve gained in the past year. ASDA leaders are one-of-a-kind and make the best of any situation presented to them, even if that means missing Girls every Sunday night.

The next time your classmates attempt to uncover your powers to stop time, just smile and say “I have a planner”.

Under the Needle: Demystifying “Stab Lab”

IT’S that time of year again; the second-year students are drooling on their operative scrubs, and it has nothing to do with Chipotle at the lunch-and-learn.  Ask one of them why she’s only talking out of one side of her mouth, and she’ll wipe the drool with her sleeve and say, “Stab lab.” In other words, they’ve just learned how to perform intraoral injections on each other.

At the University of Colorado, this is a momentous occasion.  It falls in the middle of the second year—a day before the white coat ceremony, and a week before the students meet their own patients in the clinic.  It’s seen as a rite of passage—and like all rites of passage, it’s surrounded by decades of lore.  As a first year student, I’ve already spent months listening to stories about how easy it is to turn your partner’s cheek into something like a bulging, overripe vegetable—so I recently sat down with two second year students who set me straight.

Bob Johnson (Colorado ’15) reminded me that the risky part of a dental procedure typically comes after the anesthesia.

“Nobody should be going in there scared,” Johnson said. “You know what you need to know, and you know how to fix the things that can go wrong.”  He says the real importance of “stab lab”—as it’s affectionately called—is learning how to navigate that age-old paradox of dentistry: we often need to cause pain in order to help our patients.

“And we need to be comfortable with doing that,” Johnson said, “Because we’re going to be doing it for the rest of our lives.” Johnson’s classmate, Marie De Puey, said the experience was partly so valuable because it allowed students to feel that pain.

“When you’re working with someone you trust,” she said—speaking of her partner, Elise Post—“You can say that a certain injection really hurts, and work with her to figure out how to make it less painful.”With the help of a fourth-year student, De Puey and Post learned how to confuse the pain pathway by applying pressure during a greater palatine nerve block—and when they switched roles and De Puey took the syringe, Post barely felt the injection.

“Now I can use the same technique with my patients,” De Puey said.

Elise Post (Colorado '15) administers her first intraoral injection to her classmate, Marie De Puey (Colorado ’15)

By: Christian Piers(Colorado ’16)

Johnson wanted to feel exactly what his patients would feel, so he declined topical anesthetic prior to the injection.  Then during the posterior superior alveolar nerve block, he felt an odd sensation—like the needle was “going so deep, it was plunging into my brain.”

“I knew where it was going, so I didn’t have to worry about it,” he said.  “But the layperson doesn't know what kind of anatomy is back there, and you always tend to assume the worst.” After receiving the injection, he wants to talk his own patients through the experience.

“You want to let them know it’s going to feel a little strange,” he said, “But also that you know exactly what's going on, and they're safe in your hands.”

De Puey said for any first-years who want to know exactly what’s going on, resist the urge to search the internet.

“Don’t listen to Dr. Youtube,” she said. With a class of 80 and a single professor, you might think you need to supplement your learning, but watching too many techniques can be confusing.

“Calm down and trust that your professors have prepared you,” she said, “And if you need to ask any questions, remember: the upperclassmen are your best resource.”

When I asked Johnson if he was ready to be my best resource next year, he smiled and said, “You know what they say: See one, do one, teach one.” He and De Puey received their white coats on January 18. Judging by their smiles, they have regained full sensation in their lips.
