    Parents, TeachYour ChildrenTo Lie.

In generations past, lovingparents taught their childrenthe simple and unnegotiablelessons of conduct necessaryto ensure a fulfilling life andto maintain a civil society -Do not lie, cheat or steal.Respect the land, the law andeach other.

Following such rules ofconduct would instill soundethics and a strong character-both of which are honorable

traits were told and wouldpromise us a valued place inour society. Equally, notfollowing such rules ofconduct would promisepunishment in the home orarrest in public.

These lessons were so valuablethey were passed downthrough the generations andin many homes are stillpracticed today.

Decay and depreciation entera society when any one of itsmembers refuse to participatein the rules of conduct andinstead behave uncivilized byharming others by way ofstealing or even killing. Andas a means to avoid thepenalties for their actions thatthey know the civil world willimpose, they instead and

without shame demanddefense of their own civilrights. They expect the civil

world that they neverparticipated in to offer themmercy. And if their wishes are

not granted and their freedomrestored they will protestunfair treatment.

This land of ours is governedby law to regulate the actionsof its members and is

enforced by imposing penalty.Justice is to ensure peace anda genuine respect for allpeople. A lack of fairness or

justice for all is in fact definedas injustice.

Justice and the judicial systemare fair by design. Injusticesarise when an offender of asociety seeks for and receivesmore compassion than a

victim. And by way ofAmerican law and American

rights educated professionalswho are sworn to defend allthe people through its courtsmust hear the case.

When we the people are nolonger we and instead I,the mindset of having a civilsociety is changed. Whenpeace and respect are grantedto the offenders it is injusticeand teaches us that the rules

we are held by have in factreversed.

This is a confusing messagefor our children of presentday unless we teach them thenew truth about civil living-do lie, do cheat and do harmto your neighbor and simplyscream foul play and the

world will grant you mercy.Or, maybe the squeaky wheelhas had enough grease andinstead needs replacing.

    TextTethering...Know When

    Youre Being

    Served!

I recently read an article, written by a guy that clearly

explained one of the easiest and

    most successful text strategies.

    Its done by (hopefully!) single

men and quite often done to

multiple women at once. Its a

    high reward, low risk strategy.

You see text tethering is all

    about one guy keeping many

    women on the hook with

    perfectly timed and tactical text

    messages. In this tethering

strategy, there are no phonecalls, no real relationship, and

    only last minute dates.

    See, typical text tethering may

come after a date, perhaps a

week or so later, and a text

    might say something like this:

I cant wait to see you again,

or I miss you, or Wish you

    were here. All very kind

things to say, but not via text

    message especially when there is

    no other form of

    communication happening

    within the relationship.

    This is something my girlfriends

and I have discussed for quite

some time now. If a guy wants

to talk to you or go out with

you, then he will make a

    legitimate attempt to do so.

He will call you regularly, hewill ask you out on dates, and

he will make a sincere attempt

to get to know who you are

and what you are about. An

    occasional text message just

doesnt stand up to a genuinely

    interested guy.

So, ultimately, if you feel like

    youre being served a tethering

text message, dont go for the

    volley when theres an ace

    player in the midst.

    Youve been served!

DoesFantasticFade?I was recently talking to afriend of mine that said the

    state of his relationship wasnt,

    wellfantastic. So, I

    thought he must mean that

    the excitement of the new

    relationship fizzled. Then I

    asked myself, Does

    Fantastic fade?

    Does the passion sustain

    throughout a couples

    relationship? I think the

    obvious answer is no, but

  • 8/11/2019 Asc September 2014 for Web

    11/4411

when you dig a little deeper,

    the answer is more complex

    than you might think.

    How long does the romantic

    high last? Some experts say

2 months to 2 years, but Ive

    personally witnessed couples

whose romance never waned.Ive also heard of couples that

    never had sparks initially, but

    developed chemistry over time.

    Its proven that there are

    stages of love and relation-

ships. Of course the first stage

    of a relationship is the

    romantic stage, where many

    feel good hormones, similar to

a drug high, are pumpingthrough your body!

    My personal opinion is that

initially chemistry is great in a

    relationship, but after a few

    years couples lose that feel

    good hormone and then go

    through a power struggle.

If a couple resolves conflict in

    a healthy and respectful

    manner then the couple moves

on to a deeper kind of love.

    At this point different

hormones are produced.Instead of getting that in

    love hormone high, these

new types of hormones give us

    more of an attachment

    feeling with our partner.

So, if you realize you cant

actually stay in that giddy, in

love stage forever, and can get

    past the power struggle stage,

the reward of a lastingrelationship can be far better

    than you ever imagined!

    Jewelry DoctorIs your watch reallywaterproof?

    Going Swimming?

Most watches are not actuallywaterproof. In fact, all watchessold in the USA cannot legally becalled waterproof. Instead, theterm water resistant is used to

describe the ability of a watch towithstand some exposure towater. And the degree of waterresistance is usually marked onthe watchs face.

How much water resistance youneed depends on your level ofactivity. A watch that is waterresistant to 30 meters can besplashed with water but notsubmerged. A watch with 50m onthe dial can be submerged (suchas in the shower) but not for any

length of time. Arating of 100 meters

is OK for swimming, diving, or snorkeling, while a rating of 200meters means the watchcan be used forrecreational scuba diving.A rating of more than200 meters is essential forthose participating inactive water sports andserious divers.

    10 Things aboutSmoothies/ProteinShakes You May

    not Know

    1. Energy Proteins are probably thebest source for energy. Most smoothies eithercome with, or can have protein added to themeasily. Unlike fats, proteins dont need to beconverted to another form, before they can be

used. Unlike sugars, proteins provide a sus-tained energy source.

    2. Feel Full Proteins will leave yourtummy much more satisfied than starches.1 20oz protein smoothie will leave you notonly satisfied, but can be your entire meal forbreakfast, lunch, or dinner!

    3. Tasty Many foods high in protein aredelicious! A smoothie with some protein in itcan be one of the best tasting things you eatin your day! Who doesnt like creamy milkchocolate protein with some deliciouspeanut butter?

    8. Cellular level Proteins areknown as the building blocks, because theyare required to build every type of cell in ourbody. Any damaged cell, such as a bustedblood vessel, is repaired with proteins.

    9. Create chemicals Goodchemicals that is! Our body relies on a wide

variety of chemicals to function, many ofwhich are created from proteins.Antibodies are key components ofthe immune system. Enzymes actas catalysts for chemical reactions.Hormones send messages tothe brain. Proteins are requiredto create all of these. A proteinsmoothie is doing all kindsof good by keeping youhealthy and full!

    TMJProblemsBy Calvin Bessonet, DDS,FAGD

More than fifteen percent ofAmerican adults suffer fromchronic facial pain. Somecommon symptoms include

pain in or around the ear, tenderness of the jaw, clickingor popping noises when openingthe mouth, or even headachesand neck aches.

Two joints and several jawmuscles make it possible to openand close the mouth. They worktogether when you chew, speak, and swallow. These structuresinclude muscles and ligaments, as

well as the jaw bone, themandible (lower jaw) withtwo joints, the TMJs(temporomandibular joint). The TM joint is one of the mostcomplex joints in the body.Located on each side of thehead, these joints work togetherand can make many differentmovements, including acombination of rotating andtranslocational (gliding)action, used when chewingand speaking.

    Several muscles help open and

close the mouth. They controlthe lower jaw (mandible) as itmoves forward, backward, andside-to-side. Both TM joints areinvolved in these movements. Each TM joint has a discbetween the ball and socket (seediagram). The disc cushions the

load while enabling the jaw toopen widely and performrotating and translocationalmovements. Any problem thatprevents this complex system ofmuscles, ligaments, discs andbones from working togetherproperly may result in a painfulTMJ disorder.

    Diagnosis & Treatment

A dentist can help identify thesource of the pain with athorough exam and appropriatex-rays. Often, it's a sinus, toothache or an early stage ofperiodontal disease. But for some

pain, the cause is not so easilydiagnosed. The pain could berelated to the facial muscles, the

jaw or temporomandibular joint, located in the front of the ear.Treatments for this pain mayinclude stress reducing exercises, muscle relaxants, or wearing amouth protector to prevent teethgrinding. They've been successfulfor many and your dentist canrecommend which is best for

    you.

Several conditions may be relatedto TMD, but they can be quite

varied, and they are oftendifficult to pinpoint. TMdisorders can result when the

jaw muscles or jaw jointsare affected.

The joint, ligaments, and musclesused for chewing and grindingfood may all be involved. Insome cases, it is not possible toclearly determine the causes. Insome complex cases, where morethan one doctor is involved, itmay be difficult to get aconsensus on treatment.

Some TM problems result fromarthritis, dislocation, and injury.

All of these conditions can causepain and dysfunction. Musclesthat move the joints are alsosubject to injury and disease.Injuries to the jaw, head or neck, and diseases such as arthritis,

might result in some TMproblems. Other factors thatrelate to the way the teeth fittogetherthe bitemay causesome types of TMD. Stress isthought to be a factor. TMDaffects women of childbearingage more than men, or oldermen and women.

There are several ways the TMJdisorders may be treated. Your

dentist will recommend whattype of treatment is needed foryour particular problem or rec-ommend that you be referred toa specialist. Treatment mayinvolve a series of steps. Thestep-by-step plan is in your bestinterest because only minor, relatively non-invasive treatmentmay be needed.

Diagnosis is an important stepbefore treatment. Part of yourclinical examination includeschecking the joints and musclesfor tenderness, clicking, poppingor difficulty moving. Yourcomplete medical history may bereviewed, so it is important tokeep your dental office recordup-to-date. Your dentist maytake x-rays and may make acast of your teeth to see how

your bite fits together. Yourdentist may also requestspecialized x-rays for theTM joints.

Estate Planning:Not Just for theRich and Famous

The recent tragic and unexpecteddeaths of Robin Williams and JoanRivers have put a spotlight on

celebrity estate planning. FollowingRobin Williams apparent suicide, and Joan Rivers unexpected passing, questions were raised as to how theirfamilies would fare financially. Whilethe topic of ones own passing isdifficult to both consider anddiscuss, these tragic and unexpecteddeaths demonstrate how quicklycircumstances can change, and howimportant it is that everyone have anestate plan in place.

At his death, Robin Williams owned

two large properties in California, worth nearly $25 million in equity, placing his net worth at an estimated$50 million. Joan Rivers was also

worth a significant amount of money, with recent estimates pegging her networth at about $150 million. Itseems an obvious fact that individuals

with such large estates should engagein extensive estate planning. However, individuals with muchmore modest estates should alsoengage in extensive estate planning, for many of the same reasons thatthose with large estates do so.

For instance, it is important tomost people that their hard-earnedlegacy is passed on to their heirs in aparticular way. In order to ensurethat ones wishes are realized, someformal, legal document outliningthose wishes must be executed. Thiscan take the form of a will or a trust, depending on what it is that theparticular individual is tryingto accomplish.

For example, after Robin Williamspassing, it came to light that he hadestablished at least one revocabletrust during his lifetime. A revocabletrust is a trust that can be altered atany time during the life of the trustscreator. Assets can be transferredinto that trust during the creatorslife and will then pass to thedesignated beneficiaries following thegrantors death, without the necessityof succession proceedings. Avoiding

succession means that the trustdocuments remain private, and donot become a part of public record.

The two very valuable pieces of realestate owned by Robin Williams areheld in the name of his revocabletrust, allowing those pieces ofproperty to pass to his designatedbeneficiaries without any successionproceeding. Creating a revocabletrust and transferring a significantamount of his estate into that trust

    was likely important to Robin

Williams because it kept the processout of the public eye. Estateplanning of this kind can also bebeneficial to everyone as successionproceedings can often become acontentious, complicated, andlong process.

The existence of Robin Williamsrevocable trust gives his family oneless thing to worry about in the

wake of his sudden, tragic death.Instead of having to worry aboutcomplications with the estate, orlong, costly, and possibly contentioussuccession proceedings, the familycan instead focus on their grieving.

The value of this piece of mindcannot be overstated, and applies toall individuals; famous or not, withlarge or modest estates.

Another important considerationwhen engaging in estate planning isthe existence of a living will. JoanRivers passing demonstrates howunpredictable life can be. Theseemingly healthy 81-year-old wasplaced on life support after goinginto cardiac arrest during what wassupposed to be a routine procedure. In an instant, Ms. Rivers family was

faced with a number of difficultdecisions. While it is known that Ms.Rivers executed a legal documentappointing her daughter Melissa asher healthcare agent under her Powerof Attorney, it is not known whetherMs. Rivers also executed a living willto guide her daughter in making thedifficult decisions required in end oflife decisions.

A living will is a document thatexplains ones wishes regarding what

you want to happen if you are being

kept alive by artificial means. Livingwills typically include a provision thatclarifies ones feelings about life-pro-longing treatments in the event ofincapacitation. Making decisions oflife and death with regard to a familymember is no doubt a difficult, painful process, and having a living

will in place can certainly help tomake that process slightly lesspainful for your loved ones.

Regardless of the type of estateplanning that is chosen, it isundeniably important that everyone, regardless of fame or wealth, engagein some sort of planning. By doing

so, you are not only ensuring thatyour legacy pass to your heirsaccording to your wishes, but you

will be also making things mucheasier for those loved ones youleave behind.

    Automationfor your Home

Your alarm wakes you up at6:30 in the morning. Oneminute later the lights in yourroom automatically turn on.

You get out of bed and walkdown to the kitchen to get afresh brewed cup of coffee and

catch up on the morning news, which, conveniently, is alreadyplaying on the TV. You checkthe time and head back to yourbathroom where the shower ison and heated up. When youfinish, the bathroom lights turnoff as you leave the room.Dressed and ready for work,

you head out to the garage.Last year you had to deal with agarage door opener. This year, the door opens automatically

just like your programmed it to.At work you get a text fromyour thermostat alerting youthat the temperature is going todrop. You open up your homeautomation app and schedule

your thermostat to increase thetemperature 30 minutes before

    you usually get home.

And while such a scenariomight seem far-fetched --or, at least, expensive itspossible due to the increasinglyconnected world we live in. Itsthe Internet of Things: the

virtual representations ofreal objects in a connected

structure. Its your weather apptalking to your thermostatto ensure your home is ascomfortable and efficient aspossible. Its motion sensorsdetecting movement andturning on hallway lights so youdont trip in the middle of thenight. Its pulling up yourhome automation app andshutting the garage door that

you accidentally left open. Inshort, its what makes homeautomation a reality.

GetAutomatedWhen it comes to homeautomation, your options willbe primarily dictated by yourbudget. Interested in homeautomation but not sure if itssomething you want to fullycommit to? For about $249 youcan pick up a Nest Learning

Thermostat that features Wi-Ficonnectivity and software thatprograms itself based on yourusage and schedule. If yourelooking to add a little moreautomation, Belkins WeMosystem allows you to quickly andaffordably automate individuallights and devices with easy-to-install motion sensors.

Of course, once you discoverthe convenience of homeautomation, we wouldnt besurprised if you decided to step itup a bit. For some, this means

going the whole nine yards andinstalling a whole-house systemthat links all your homes majorcomponents (lighting, HVAC,media, security). If this is thecase, youll want to talk to alicensed home automation pro.Theyll be able to design andinstall a secure system thatdelivers the features you want ata budget you can afford.

If youre less concerned abouthaving a smart home and moreso about having a safe home, home automation is a great wayto improve your homes security. From motion sensors to videosurveillance to fire and watermonitoring companies offercustomizable security solutionsthat keep you safe when youre in

your home, while letting youkeep tabs on it when youre not.The convenience of homeautomation is not without itsdrawbacks. Privacy and security

will remain an issue so long asyour devices are connected towireless networks. However, given the pace at which technol-ogy has, and will continue toevolve, its safe to assume that

these issues will be resolvedsooner than later, making homeautomation a standard feature inevery home.

Gram Theft Parsons20,000 roads I went down, down, down-And they all led mestraight back home to you fromReturn of the Grievous Angelby Gram Parsons.

I saw where Baton Rouge playedhost to Don McLean a few weeksago-the singer-songwriter foreverassociated with the 1972 Song ofthe Year American Pie.

The song is a recounting ofThe Day the Music Died-thatFebruary 3rd day in 1959 when aplane crash killed teen idols BuddyHolly, Ritchie Valens and J.P.Richardson (The Big Bopper).

Im surprised that no creativesoul ever bothered to write acopycat version about the eventsof the early 70s when rock lostthree members of the 27 Club-Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin andJim Morrison.

Every guitar player who everpicked up a Fender Stratocastertried valiantly to emulateHendrixs wild psychedelic solos-even though he was playing themleft-handed on an axe strungupside down.

Likewise, every blues singerwanted to wail like our PortArthur neighbor Joplin when shelost her Bobby McGee.

    And every William Blake

mystic-The roads of excess leadto the palace of wisdom-wanted to Break on Through tothe Other Side with Morrisonand The Doors.

But the drugs of those timestook their toll and all three died atthe age of 27 within 10 months ofeach other in 1970-71 leaving uschildren of the 60s wonderingwhere the next legends wouldcome from.

The Beatles had broken up sothey werent coming back to saveour musical souls like they had in1964. But there was a glimmer of

hope from Southern rock bandslike Lynyrd Skynyrd who claimedfans throughout Dixie when theyanswered Neil Youngs scathingSouthern Man with SweetHome Alabama.

And from out West, groups likethe Eagles were starting toincorporate elements of countrymusic into rock-a strategy that hadworked for several artists in the60s including Ray Charles.

For us sons of the South whohad grown up on Hank Williamsbut could also pick out BlackDog by Led Zeppelin, it was a

welcome change. And leading the charge was a

    charismatic, long-haired country

boy from Waycross, Georgia, named Gram Parsons.

Parsons was the classic walkingcontradiction when he signed onwith the Byrds to play keyboard. He was now a member of one ofthe most popular rock bands inthe country, yet he often wore aNashville-style Nudie suit andcowboy boots. The Nudie suitspopularized by country singersoften had individual designs-PorterWagoners had a wagon wheel, for example.

Grams suit had some 5-leafmarijuana plants and numerouscolored pills stitched into theoutfit and red flames roared upfrom the bell-bottomed pants. After September 19, 1973, someremembered it as an eerie omen of

things to come.Parsons was a huge fan of

George Jones and Merle Haggardand he persuaded Byrds frontman Roger McGuinn to move theband to a more country style. After the band scored a big hitwith a distinctively country versionof Bob Dylans You Aint GoingNowhere, the Byrds were eveninvited to appear on the sacredstage of the Grand Ole Opry.

The long-haired youngstersendured the catcalls raining down

in Ryman Auditorium and wonsome moderate approval withNowhere when the rednecks

realized these hippies couldreally play and sing.

A Merle Haggard cover wassupposed to follow but thatswhen Parsons shocked the Opryestablishment by stepping up tothe mike and announcing, Mygrandmothers been listening tothe Opry all her life and this is asong I wrote for her.

He then launched into hishaunting classic Hickory Windto the dismay of the Nashvilleestablishment that banned theband for life. However, severalperformers waiting in the wingsincluding Opry regular SkeeterDavis were seen applauding theByrds as they left the stage.

Years later after leaving theByrds, Parsons and bandmate

Chris Hillman would write a songabout Nashvilles iconic radio andTV host Ralph Emery calledDrugstore Truck Driving Manto commemorate the event. Amodified version of that songdirected at then-governor ofCalifornia Ronald Reagan wasperformed at Woodstock byJoan Baez.

Parsons and Hillman formed anew band-The Flying BurritoBrothers-which was met withcritical acclaim but little financial

success. That just seemed to fireGram up as he pushed even harderto get the world to accept his

self-proclaimed Cosmic AmericanMusic (He hated the termProgressive Country.).

After the demise of theBurritos, he hooked up with afemale singer who looked like agoddess and sang like anangel-one Emmylou Harris. Theduo hit a harmony with GeorgeJones weepers and Parsonssoriginals like Las Vegas andGrievous Angel that struck achord with all the truckers andthe kickers and the cowboyangels who had one foot inthe rock world of the 60s andone foot in the Southerncountry world.

Parsons even influenced one ofthe greatest rock and roll bands ofall time-the Rolling Stones. On avisit to England, he met KeithRichards and stayed with himafter refusing to go to SouthAfrica on a tour because of theapartheid policies.

There, the two played guitarstogether-among other things-andone of the Stones biggest hits-Honky Tonk Woman wasoriginally recorded as a countrysong (Check out Country Honkone day when boredom overtakesyou.) apparently thanks toParsonss influence.

The strange trip that was Gram

Parsonss life does not evencompare to the strange set ofevents surrounding his death.Gram was obsessed with UFOsand would often go out to a placein southeastern California knownas Joshua Tree with McGuinn,Hillman and Richards to look forflying saucers and get high. Infact, a song called Mr. Spacemanwas a hit for the Byrds-and clearlya country-inspired record.

On September 19, 1973,Parsons returned to Joshua Treewith some friends to celebrate thecompletion of a new album. After

day-long drug and alcohol use, hewas found unresponsive in amodest inn and taken to a localhospital. He died in the Hi-Desert Memorial Hospital at theage of 26-two months short of the27 Club. Now the story-be itmyth, legend, exaggeration or anycombination of the three-reallygets weird.

Gram and his manager PhilKaufman had made a pact at thefuneral of a mutual friend thatwhoever died first, the survivorwould take the other guys bodyout to Joshua Tree in the desert,

have a few drinks and burn it.Enter Grams stepfather Bob

    Parsons who had pulled some

shady deals in-where else-NewOrleans-and believed if he got theremains back to Louisiana, hecould lay claim to Grams moneyusing the Napoleonic Code.

When Kaufman learned of BobParsonss plans, he did what anyex-con who had served time withCharlie Manson would do-he tookto drinking and devised a plan. After downing a fifth of courage,Kaufman recruited Michael

Martin-an old hippie with a hearsehe used for camping and headedfor the airport.

The drunken duo arrived at theloading dock just as a flatbed truckwith Grams casket rolled up.Kaufman somehow convinced anairline employee that the familyhad changed its plans and wantedto ship the body on a privately, chartered flight.

While Kaufman signed aphony name to the paperwork, apoliceman pulled up outsidethreatening the entire operation. But incredulously, the officerhelped the body snatchers load thecasket into the unlicensed,liquor-filled hearse. Despite hit-ting a wall on the way out, Martinand Kaufman left the airport withthe body of Gram Parsons.

They stopped at a service stationand filled a gas can with premiumfuel (I didnt want him to ping,Kaufman later said.) and headedout for Joshua Tree.

When they reached a placecalled Cap Rock, a formation nearthe Joshua Monument, theyunloaded the coffin, doused itwith gasoline and lit it.

A giant fireball erupted into thedesert night sucking GramParsonss ashes into the starry sky.Soon, the highway patrol was inhot pursuit, but according to oneofficer, encumbered sobrietyprevented the law from catching

up with the cremators.Kaufman and Martin laid lowfor a couple weeks and thenturned themselves in onNovember 5, 1973-Grams 27thbirthday. They were fined $708 indamages for the coffin and $300each for body snatching andreleased.

Kaufman then threw himself aparty to raise money to pay thefine-Kaufmans Koffin KaperKoncert, it was called-with musicby Bobby Boris Pickett and theCrypt Kickers of Monster Mashfame.

Bob Parsons never made adime off Gram Parsons and died ayear later.

Gram Parsons-like HankWilliams, Elvis Presley, JimiHendrix and so many others-wasso far ahead of his time that hecould shake, rattle and roll thestatus quo and get away with it onsheer talent. Unfortunately, thesegeniuses got caught in the same

sticky web of drugs that took awayso many of their peers.

Grams buddy Keith Richards(How is he still alive?) gave afitting eulogy-He loved countrymusic, but he really didnt like thecountry music business and didntthink it should be angled just atNashville. The musics biggerthan that. It should toucheverybody.

If you happen to be reading this

on or around September 19, pullup an old Gram Parsonss song onYouTube and see what you think. Then find some of those bandslike Synyrd and see what you getwhen you combine Southern rockand country. Maybe CosmicAmerican Music.

    Epilog-

A few closing notesThere wasa movie called Gram TheftParsons made in 2003 starringJohnny Knoxville as Phil Kaufman. Some of the accounts of Gramsdeath in this article were stolen-Imean borrowed from excerptsfrom Kaufmans book.

If you wish to comment-goodor bad-my e-mail is

[email protected]. The firsttwo letters are for Gram and theByrds, the lyky in the middleare for Lynyrd Skynyrd and theseven is for my baseball idolMickey Mantle.

    Ive heard some

dumb things. After 12 years of publishing

this Bully article I wonder wherethe next inspiration will comefrom and everyday life providesit without fail.

It befuddles me everytime as tohow much human fodder there isout there to exploit.

This month the news media brokethe news the day before the 4th ofJuly. The very popular pinic favorite, watermelon, is also a soothingpleasant enhancement to a relation-

ship with the same effect as Viagra. The only catch is that you dontneed to eat the red juicy part. Aperson needing this personal liftneeds to eat the rhine.

Now I love watermelon and Ididnt need any encouragementto enjoy the flavor of the fruitbut now I am going to be likePopeye and jump on the rhinelike Popeye loves spinach.

I can see me eating a melon like asquirrel eats a hickory nut. Ill eat itfrom the outside in.

Can you imagine couples askingquestions like, Did you chill themelon? No. I left it out on theporch to keep it HOT!!!!!

Now what do we do aboutthumping the melon todetermine the melons ripeness. Are ripe, hollow sounding melonsthe best or should we grab thestiffest, greenest rhined melonsavailable. The greener the rhine, the better the time, I say.

I dont know what to thinkabout the research but if it works Illbe planting melons like I planttomatoes. I dont necessarily needthese melon rhines but why look agift horse in the mouth.

This past month I had the

opportunity to take a bass fishingtrip with one of my best compadres,Mike Rambin.

Now Ram claims to be a greatfisherman but he can be a pain inthe butt sometimes. I remember onetime I went fishing with him and hewas so obstinant that Id wanted tojump in the water, swim to the bankand drive my own car home. If Idonly taken my keys!!!

Its really sad to look at hisfishing poles. They are black. They look like they have beendipped in tar. I believe he gotthem in a garage sale or foundthem and strengthened them bydipping them in tar. Either way Ifeel sorry for him.

On this particular fishing tripthe subject of fishing license came

up. I had just purchased my licensebecause as all Louisiana fishermenknow fishing license expire onJune 30th and need to be renewedafter June 30th.

Ram said, I purchased my licensein October of last year. I aintbuying another until my year is up.Inspection stickers last 1 year, bowling dues 1 year, mosteverything that a person needsto purchase as a liscense for last

for a 1 year cycle. As I spoke to himand pointed out that the law was thelaw and a new license was needed asof July 1st.

    He asked the profound

question, Why? Who decided thatJuly 1st was the beginning ofFISHING SEASON.

A resident fishing liscense cost$9.50 for 365 days of fishing inLouisiana unless you purchase itafter July 1st. He then said, All ofthe 49 states of America follow acommon sense approach that alicense purchased for 1 year, lasts 1year. Only in Louisiana you canbuy a yearly license that cost $9.50for 365 days and also cost $9.50 for1 day if you want to go fishing onJune 30th, the day before July 1st.

    There is no FISHING SEASON

and unless the Wild Life andFisheries CANT read simplenumbers indentifying when 12months is up. I believe hes right.

I love this state but quite franklywe must be stupidest state in theunion. I guarantee the Wild Life andFisheries has computers tracking ourhunting license, whichcorresponed to seasons. Cant theircomputers count 12 months.I doubt it. It would requiresomeone to have a brain and toactually use it. Common senserequires that we look at todayssystem. Seems a little hinky. I betsomeone is getting paid on the

    side !!!!!!!!

Although hunting and fishing canbe very enjoyable sports there arecertain fears and dangers that goalong with the two. It could be thatbecause of risks the sports are soexciting. Some hunters are fearful ofthe dark and really don't care to beout in the darkness by themselves. Ispend a lot of time by myself in thedarkness. Darkness does not stop me

from doing my thing, but I mustadmit that concerns of mysurroundings amplify as the daybegins to lose light.

It's amazing to me how manypeople go into the woods without acompass or GPS. I don't own a GPS,but I will always bring a compass withme into the woods. Knowing my wayin and out allows me to venture faraway from my starting point. Thereare plenty of hunters that are afraid toget off the beaten path for the fear ofgetting lost. Rightfully so. If you everget lost you will experience one of themost uncomfortable feelings of your

life. Getting lost will turn a man intoa wild animal instantly. My dad foundtwo people that had spent the nightlost in the Tensas woods one night. When they saw him in the woods thenext morning they refused to leavehim and let him hunt. After my dadgot them to the road and manythanks had been given there was onelast sentence uttered by the losthunters and it was "I'll never comeback here again!"

If there's one thing most peopleare afraid of in the woods it wouldhave to be snakes. I'm not reallyscared of snakes and they don't keep

me out of the woods. That's not tosay that I don't look carefully forthem and the right species will sureenough send me in the oppositedirection quickly when I almost putmy foot on it. It's amazing that morehunters don't get bit by snakes thanthey do. When traveling through thewoods I look only directly in front ofme. I don't care to look all aroundme for snakes. A snake that's severalfeet from a person that doesn't feelthreatened as far as I know has nevertried to chase a man down. Whilehunting I try avoid going throughparticular spots such as tree tops,

water holes or thick cover where mostsnakes will hide. I'll usually go aroundthose spots if I can to avoid aconfrontation. Believe it or not, more

people get bit by snakes around theirhouse gardening than hunting orfishing. Naturally I've ran across andwill continue to see my share ofsnakes in the woods. I've been struckat several times and I almost kissed arattler in a tree top while trying todrive deer out of an area on a warmNovember day. Although I was only acouple inches away from him, he

never attempted to strike or rattle atme. To this day I've never seen acopperhead or rattlesnake getaggressive with me unless I've steppedon it. I can't give the same credit tothe cottonmouth. They definitelyhave a different temperament. Thosesnakes can be very mean and will veryoften hold their ground. There's beentimes when I've seen that big whitemouth open from a distance of ten ormore feet away.

There's times I'll kill poisonoussnakes and there are times I'll justturn and walk away. Let's face it, ifyou kill one you really haven't done a

whole lot because there's plenty moreout there. One thing for sure, I'llnever harm a non-poisonous snake. Ihear too many people say they killthem all. That's really not smartbecause snakes have their place in theenvironment and a non-poisonoussnake is no more harmful than abutterfly. I don't fault anyone forkilling a poisonous snake, but everywoodsman should learn to distinguishbetween a venomous snake and anon-venomous snake it's really notthat hard to do....

Robert Ambeau, a local resident of Gonzales,Louisiana, has been a Commercial Hot Air BalloonPilot for over 28 years and counting. He hasover 1,800 hours as pilot in command. He haswon numerous hot air balloon competitionsthroughout the years. The 2013 Louisiana Hot AirBalloon State Championship was Ambeausfifteenth State Championship, he is also a threetime winner of the Mississippi StateChampionship, and the Southeast RegionChampion. His ballooning achievements alsoinclude four Key Grab competitions, 1988 Rookieof the Year, and BFA National Champion PointsLeader. These competitions have taken Ambeauacross the entire country and Puerto Rico.

A true born daredevil, Ambeau says he hasenjoyed heights ever since he was a small child. He has skydived, flew ultralights and poweredparachutes. As a young adult he worked as anironworker on tall buildings and bridges. Ambeausays this fascination with height has led him towhere he is today, flying hot air balloons aroundthe country.

Ambeau got his start in ballooning by being

approached to be a sponsor at a local balloon rallybeing held here in Gonzales. He decided toparticipate and invited his friend Coy Casso to joinhim. They were to get a ride, but as the weather

wasnt cooperative they were not able to. Theyheard from a Pilot at the event about a largeBalloon Event held in Albuquerque, New Mexicoand decided to go.

They went to Albuquerque and Ambeau was soexcited at being around 600 balloons that heknew he wanted to do this. The next day, hebought a balloon shipped it home and startedtaking lessons, and loved every second of it.

Ambeau says he was approached by Coca-Cola ofBaton Rouge in 1989 at the Nationals in BatonRouge to fly for and represent them in theiradvertising program. It has been an ongoinghonor to this day to represent such a professionalgroup of people. John Miller of Coca-Cola ofBaton Rouge and all the marketing staff havebeen a Great Supporter of the balloon activitiesthroughout the years. Ambeau will be flyingthe Coca-Cola Balloon at this years 2014Ascension Hot Air Balloon Festival as he hasin previous years.

Ambeau says that flying in a hot air balloon is athrill that few have the opportunity to experiencein their lifetime and he is excited to be able totake people up to experience this thrill. Hisfavorite part of flying is taking people up for their

first flight and seeing the excitement and thrill ontheir faces. They will remember this thrill the restof their lives.

Ambeau also enjoys the competitive aspect ofcompetition in the balloon events. He says thatflying to heights of thousands of feet in order todrop down on the target is a thrill he never tiresof. Ambeau says he has never lost theexcitement because every flight is different.

Ambeau is looking forward to seeing everyoneagain this year at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center onSeptember 26th and 27th 2014, for the 2014Ascension Parish Balloon Festival.

If you are interested in a hot air balloonflight, Ambeau can be reached at hisemail at [email protected] .
