ASC CONNECTED 102 Year-Old Alumnus Still Bleeds Blue and Gold By Madison Beall Sherman Grancell first came to UCLA when it was simply called “The Twig” and when South Campus consisted of nothing more than weeds, dirt, and a 75-ton granite rock that would later become “Founder’s Rock”. He started as a freshman in 1926, graduated in 1930, and has since become an active alumnus in multiple organizations including the Alumni Scholars Club. Grancell lives in Beverly Hills and finds himself coming to campus about three times a week when he attends meetings, lectures, and concerts. He never hesitates to attend any UCLA functions, and really enjoys cheering on the basketball team. He is a proud donor for Alumni Scholarships and other scholarships on campus. Two years ago, a gala was held in his honor for his 100th birthday. Grancell made certain that it did not conflict with any UCLA sporting events, although it was Super Bowl Sunday. Countless people spoke about Grancell, highlighting his days as an undergraduate, his involvement in the community, and his generous heart. Grancell commented on the times when he would drive nine to ten fraternity brothers from their house in Santa Monica to campus, and laughed about his banjo performances at sports games, where he would make about five dollars a day. Today, Founder’s Rock is surrounded by green grass and many buildings that were nonexistent when Sherman arrived on campus. The development of the buildings at UCLA and in Westwood really impresses Grancell and he is proud to continue to support a university that he has watched prosper and grow throughout his life. ••• WINTER 2012 WEEK 3 Bunche Alumni Mixer - "Grande Soiree dans Le Quartier Francais" Wednesday, Jan. 25, 6-7:30 p.m. JWAC Founder's Room Upward Bound House Volunteer Orientation Thursday, Jan. 26, 5-6 p.m. James West Alumni Center WEEK 4 ASC Foreign Film Afterhours - China Monday, Jan. 30, 6-9 p.m. JWAC Founder's Room Locks of Love Thursday, Feb. 2, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. James West Alumni Center WEEK 6 All ASC Meeting Tuesday, Feb. 14, 5:30-7:30 p.m. JWAC Conference Room Alumni Mentor Program Comedy Night Thursday, Feb. 16, 7-8:30 p.m. James West Alumni Center WEEK 7 Sadie Hawkins Prom Friday, Feb. 24, 7-9 p.m. JWAC Founder’s Room WEEK 8 Leadership Certification Program(LCP) Seminar Monday, Feb. 27, 5-7 p.m. JWAC Founder’s Room ASC Foreign Film Afterhours Thursday, Mar. 1, 6-9 p.m. JWAC Founder’s Room WEEK 9 ASC Outreach and Transfer Mixer Wednesday, Mar. 7, 5-6:30 p.m. JWAC Founder’s Room Mocktail Career Gala Thursday, Mar. 8, 6-8 p.m. JWAC Conference Room For more info or to RSVP, visit: www.alumnischolarsclub.org ASC WINTER QUARTER EVENTS

Sherman Grancell first came to UCLA when it was simply called “The Twig” and when South Campus consisted of nothing more than weeds, dirt, and a 75-ton granite rock that would later become “Founder’s Rock”.

Two years ago, a gala was held in his

honor for his 100th birthday. Grancell made certain that it did not conflict with any UCLA sporting events, although it was Super Bowl Sunday. Countless people spoke about Grancell, highlighting his days as an undergraduate, his involvement in the community, and his generous heart. Grancell commented on the times when he would drive nine to ten fraternity brothers from their house in Santa Monica to campus, and laughed about his banjo performances at

Today, Founder’s Rock is surrounded by green grass and many buildings that were nonexistent when Sherman arrived on campus. ASC TutoringBy Madison Beall

This past fall, ASC has started a peer tutoring program where you can receive one-on-one tutoring for your lower division classes. Scholars can also make an appointment to meet with a tutor for writing and editing assistance if they want help with a paper.

This past fall, 14 tutors and 25 tutees participated in the program.

Tutors offered their services in 18 subjects. These subjects include Chemistry, Math, Physics, Life Science, Psychology, Art History, Classics, Economics, English, History, Foreign Languages, and Political Science.

Currently the VP Committee has been running the tutoring program. Quoting Wesley Wong, head of the VP Committee, “The tutors have received rave reviews in all subject areas and students seem to really like what we're doing.  For the rest of the year, we're looking to generate more interest and participation in the program.  We'd love to have more ASC scholars apply to be tutors and more scholars to use the program.”  If you weren’t so happy with the grades you received last quarter or think you might struggle with a class in winter, please be sure to check out the program online on the ASC website! Contact the VP Committee at [email protected] with any questions.

THE FRESHMEN 15This past fall, the Alumni Scholars Club welcomed an awesome new freshmen class into the mix. Fifteen new students

were interviewed and asked the question, “What is your favorite thing about UCLA so far?” And no, they weren’t selected because they gained a little weight since coming here.

The fact that there's always something awesome to enjoy - like Bruin sporting events, free movie previews, adventures with new friends, and Bcaf smoothies!

A Great Cut for a Great Cause:ASC’s 5th Annual Locks of Love on

February 2nd

You have the power to change a child's life. Take two hours out of your busy schedule and donate your hair at ASC's Locks of Love event on February 2nd to children suffering from medically-related hair loss. If your hair is longer than 10 inches, make an appointment to donate your hair and receive a free haircut from a Vidal Sassoon stylist. For more information and to make an appointment, please visit alumni.ucla.edu/lol. Come participate in a great cut for a great cause!

The best thing about UCLA is its incredible student body. Here I have met some of the most interesting, diverse, and nicest people I've come to know.

— Eric Neufeld

Meeting people from all different backgrounds and making new friends has been my favorite part of UCLA.  The friends I have made make me laugh, keep me sane during midterms and finals, and motivate me to be a better person. I know the friendships I have made at UCLA will last a lifetime.

— Alex Collell

Feeling so connected and involved in a community like ASC is absolutely the best thing I've found at UCLA. All of us are so motivated and interesting, our members have been involved in programs all across the board, and yet we all still manage to squeeze out a little humility among all of our inherent success. Stay zesty my friends! — Adam Caparco

The best thing about UCLA is that it's a mini world in itself with some of the nicest kids I've ever met.

— Karisa Yamamoto

My favorite UCLA experience has definitely been ASC. Through ASC, I have met some awesome new friends, and I have received opportunities such as having an alumni mentor, peer mentor, and attending fun events. Also, the food at UCLA is pretty tasty. — Danielle Smith

When I had the flu over finals week, I never had to worry about where my next bowl of soup or box of crackers would come from because of the incredible family I have in Alumni Scholars Club, my sorority, and all of the amazing new friends that I've made here.  UCLA feels like home!

— Shannon Reese

I love the group exercise classes at the Wooden Center - classes like Step and Guts, Butt and Thighs have not only been super enjoyable, they've helped me work off all the delicious food at UCLA. After working out at Wooden I don't feel as guilty after eating way more than my fill at Feast :)

— Abby Swye

Bruin spirit! I love that Bruins are full of enthusiasm and school spirit. I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of this great, enthusiastic school.

— Pranav Mutatkar

What I like about UCLA so far is the location of our campus. Westwood is an interesting little town where there is a lot to do. Whenever I am bored in my dorm, I ask friends if they would like to go to Westwood and we usually find something interesting to eat or do.

— Erineo Garcia

Knowing there is something out there for you...you just need to go find it.  Having such a large student population, student groups and activities are happening everywhere!  There's an activity for everyone, all you need to do it go out there and meet people you'll call your friends for the rest of your life.

— Timothy Lee

By far my favorite thing about UCLA so far has been the friendships I have made. In the small amount of time that is fall quarter, I have made exceptional friends that I know will continue to my friends far beyond my college years.

— Vanessa Guerrero

My favorite things about UCLA so far are living in such a beautiful place and having the opportunity to meet so many friendly, incredible people.

— Jordyn Berk

What I've enjoyed most about UCLA so far has been the people. Every person I've met has an incredible background or story to tell and every one is extremely friendly, accepting, and academic. Through these phenomenal people, many of whom are in ASC, I've been introduced to a range of experiences that could only be had at UCLA! — Christina Jayson

I love that, for the first time in my life, I’m focusing entirely on what I want to do both socially and academically. UCLA has already provided me with so many unique experiences. It’s hard to believe my time here is still just getting started.

The Leadership Development Committee is proud to present the first annual Leadership Certification Program, a year-long course that gives students an opportunity to expand experiences and skills relevant to leadership development. The plan is to offer an annual year-long course that offers students the opportunity to go above and beyond basic

participation.  The program demands that students take the initiative to attend seminars and complete tasks over the course of the year that are tailored to develop leadership-specific skills. Participants must attend the 3 quarterly seminars which feature dynamic presentations put on by successful UCLA alumni and complete a sizable number of leadership-specific tasks on one's own time over the course of the year that are outlined by the leadership committee. At the end of the year, students will receive a certificate recognizing advanced leadership abilities by the standards of the Alumni Scholars Club, endorsed by the Alumni Association. Leadership Development director Peter McPartlan says that “More things are in the works, like a special badge on BruinWorks that indicates completion of the program and a 1-1 meeting with a UCLA alumnus that is in your career field.”

Forty scholars started working on the program in the fall. The first seminar featured UCLA alumna Julie Kang presenting on "Personal Branding in the Workplace."  It focused on how to manage the image we present to co-workers and employers through social media and the quality of your work.  Julie is the owner of Julie Kang Consulting and founder of Barkle.com, and has been hired by companies many times to give this presentation. A maximum of 40 scholars will be able to complete this program during this school year, and we look forward to seeing how the program will develop in the future. For more information about this program, contact Peter at [email protected].
