• altering a facility or one or more facility components in any way, including the stripping or removal of regulated asbestos-containing material (RACM) from a facility component. “Remodeling” is also considered renovation.

Demolition• the wrecking or taking out of any load-
supporting structural member of a facility and any related handling operations. Intentional burning of a facility is also considered demolition.
ApplicabilityApplicability
Renovation and demolition of most facilities, including buildings, structures, and other installations, are subject to State and Federal asbestos regulations.
ExceptionsExceptions
Certain residential buildings may be exempt unless the property was used in the past for non-residential purposes (contact the Asbestos Section for additional information).

Must be performed by a licensed Asbestos Building Inspector
Must be no more than 3 years oldRequirements for sampling locations

Friable Asbestos-Containing Materials– Any material that when dry can be or has been
crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder, and which contains more than 1 percent asbestos (e.g. pipe insulation, ceiling tiles, etc.)
Non-Friable Asbestos-Containing Materials– All other asbestos-containing materials (e.g.
floor tile in good condition, asphaltic roofing materials, etc.)

Notification Requirements for RenovationsNotification Requirements for Renovations For projects involving greater than or equal to 160
square feet, 260 linear feet or 35 cubic feet of regulated asbestos-containing materials– 10 working day notification
For projects involving more than 25 but less than 160 square feet, more than 25 but less than 260 linear feet or more than 10 but less than 35 cubic feet of regulated asbestos-containing materials– 5 calendar days notification
For projects involving 25 square feet or less, 25 linear feet or less or 10 cubic feet or less of regulated asbestos-containing materials– Prior to abatement
