Review Bridge Drawings: Construction drawings from 1968, 2006, and 2009 werereviewedtoidentifysuspect asbestos‐containingmaterials(ACM)andotherregulatedmaterialsatthebridge.AsbestosSummary: Twenty(20)homogeneousmaterialswere identifiedat thebridgethatweresuspect for containing asbestos. Two of the twentymaterialswere found to be ACM. A samplelocationmapisprovidedinAppendixII.ThefollowingmaterialswereidentifiedasACM:

The asbestos‐containing, black tar sealant is located on the light pole bases outside of thebarrierwalls.Thematerialisnon‐friableandingoodcondition.

The asbestos‐containing,blackadhesiveon theblackvinylpads is locatedon the lightpolebasesoutsideofthebarrierwallsonthebridgedeck.Thematerialisnon‐friableandingoodcondition.

ThefollowinglocationswereinspectedforACM:

Thebridgedeck,roadwearsurfaces,piers,guardrails,slopes,abutments,wingwalls,utilitiesandsuperstructure.

Noconstructionjointswereidentifiedintheabutmentatthesouthsideofthebridge.Handexcavationwascompletedatconstructionjointsbetweentheabutmentandthewingwallsandno3‐plyjointwaterproofingorotherwaterproofingmaterialswereidentified.

Electrical utility conduit and junction boxes were identified at the south abutment andunderthe bridgedeck.DrawingreviewidentifiedBakelite®fittingsinthemetalexpansioncouplers of the electrical conduit systems at the bridge. The Bakelite® fittingswere notsampledatthisbridge,however,representativesamplesofBakelitefittings,fibrouspackingsandrigidgasketswerecollectedfromexpansioncouplersatmultiplebridgesattheCanofWorms complexandnoneof the sampleswere found to containasbestos. Inspection ofother electrical components identified no coatings or insulation suspect for containingasbestos.

Castirondrainpipeforstormwaterdischargewasobservedunderthebridge. Inspection

of the stormwaterpipe identifiednocoatingsorinsulationsuspectforcontainingasbestos.

Therewere noutilities forwater, gas,communications,orotherservicesobservedonorbelowthebridge.

LeadPaint–None.Sampleswerecollectedfrom1painttypeatthisbridge.Lead‐based paint (0.5% or greater total lead‐by‐weight) and lead‐containing paint(<0.5% total lead)werenot identified. Disposal of coated surfaces containingconcentrations<0.5%totalleadisnotregulatedinMinnesota.

Samples collected from painted structural steel surfaces at the bridge did not

identifyleadbasedpaint,however,the1968bridgeplansidentifiedashopcoatofredleadpaint/primeronallstructuralsteelbridgecomponents.Theredleadpaint/primer is assumed to be present on top of beam flanges, under fill andspliceplates,atI‐beamwebsandflangesandabovebearingassemblies.

PeelingPaint: NoneMercury: HIDLights–NonePCBs: Lightballasts–None

Transformers/electricalboxes–NoneCaulking (<50ppm) –None. Sampleswere collected from9caulk typesat thisbridge. Noneofthesamplescontaineddetectable concentrationsofPCB. Caulking(>50ppm)–None.

Paint – None. Samples were collected from 1 paint type at this bridge. Thesampledidnotcontaindetectable concentrationsofPCB. Capacitors–None

TreatedWood: Green‐TreatedPosts–None.

Green‐TreatedWood–NoneTreatedTimberPilings–NoneCreosote‐treated wood – 10 cubic yards. Remnant, partially buried, creosotetreated railroad ties are present along an abandoned rail line runningnortheast/southwestunderneaththebridgedeck.

Bakelite bushings were identified inside couplers at electric utility conduit at the bridge.  Electrical services at Bridge 69801A were active and bakelite bushing samples were not collected from this bridge.  However, samples of bakelite bushings, fibrous packings and rigid gaskets collected from couplers at 

other Can of Worms bridges did not contain asbestos.
