AARE ONAKAKANFO: A CELEBRATION OF YORUBALAND
1. Although, our gathering together today is on the occasion for the installation of
one of our most illustrious sons as the Aare Onakakanfo of Yoruba land, it is also a
celebration of unity of purpose of Yoruba Nation as a people across board. It is a
historical truism that the status of Aare Onakakanfo as well as the authority of
conferment has successfully passed the test of tradition, custom, history and of late,
judicial test. The political history of the Yoruba bestowed on the Alaafin, the
responsibility of protecting the territorial integrity of the Yoruba race. So also is the
preservation of its custom and tradition. In the exercise of this power, the Alaafin had in
the past appointed the great warrior and Ife Prince, Lagelu as the Jagun of Yoruba land.
2. But as the expansionist tendency grew in the Yoruba Empire under the Alaafin,
the need to review the military strategy led to the abolition of the title of Jagun and its
replacement with that of Aare Onakakanfo by Alaafin Ajabo. Hence, we are here today
to witness the installation of the 15th Aare Onakakanfo in person of Otunba Gani Adams
for the exalted Yoruba title, I must state that historically, Alaafin had always submitted
himself to the dynamics of time.
3. In this connection, I am not unaware of the courtesies which the appointment of
the last two Aare Onakakanfo in persons of our illustrious and great Chief S. L.
Akintola, the last Premier of the Old Western Region and M.K.O Abiola, the elected but
not inaugurated President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This has to do with the
partisanship of these great Yoruba leaders and past Aare Onakakanfo.
4. In this regard, we have realized the importance of drawing a line between being
political and being partisan. To that end, all human beings are political animals as long

as we show interest to the development of your environment. In his advocacy for unity
of the Yoruba as well as the defense and protection of Yoruba interest, I cannot see any
person in our contemporary time that is more political than Gani Adams the 15th Aare
Onakakanfo of Yoruba land. It is this Yoruba irredentism that led to the founding of the
Oodua people’s Congress in collaboration with the initiative of our revered Dr. Fedrick
Faseun. It is because the new Aare Onakakanfo is not partisan in the sense of carrying
any membership card of any political party, which is why attendance cuts across party
lines. Still on the dynamics of time, while past Aare Onakaknfo needed swords and
bravery as instrument of warfare, modern Aare Onakakanfo requires courage and
brilliance or words to fight modern warfare. All these are not lacking in the present Aare
Onakaknfo.
5. One other innovation which had been added by dictates of modern time is the
imperativeness of rule of law according to the laws of the land in response to modern
challenges of our time. It is our response to that challenge that led to the conferment of
the title of Aare Bamofin on that eminent jurist of international renown in person of
Aare Afe Babalola SAN 13th July, 2008. In this regard, I on behalf of the entire Yoruba
race in the Diaspora express gratitude to Aare Afe Babalola for volunteering legal
guidance to the new Aare Onakakanfo in all his prosecutions to enhance and protect the
Yoruba integrity and dignity. All these in his characteristic selfishness and philanthropy
to the Yoruba agenda in human race. He is a rare gift to the Yoruba race and we are
very proud of him. There may not be a better occasion for me to comment on some key
national issues in our present polity. This is in reference to the present clamour for
restructuring in our present federal set up.

6. On Monday 1st January 2018, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
Mohammadu Buhari in a nationwide broadcast said inter alia:
“As the electioneering season approaches politicians must avoid exploiting ethnicity
and religion by linking ethnicity with religion and religion with politics. Such must be
avoided at all costs if we are to live in harmony. In this respect, the REST OF NIGERIA
COULD LEARN FROM THE SOUTHWESTERN STATE WHO (SI C). HAVE
SUCCESSFULLY INTERNALIZED RELIGION, ETHNICITY AND POLITICS”
(capitals mine).
Distinguished audience, it is my intention to adopt the quotation above, made by the
number one politician and statesman, as my framework of analysis in this address. What
could have informed this very weighty and truthful statement? Why would the President
come to a conclusion such as this despite his own seemingly irredentist ethnic
orientation and religious persuasion? What could be the moving force and sustaining
power of the ever enduring, resilient, dynamic and pragmatic Yoruba culture, traditions
and ethics and morality? As I have argued severally in virtually all my important
speeches and addresses, state or Empire building in Yorubaland was constructed on a
terra firma of intellectualism, mysticism and humanity. Yorubaland, which the President
referred to as the Southwestern States, has remained relatively and comparatively
peaceful and progressive for more that six hundred years, during which time, the old
Oyo Empire’s Imperial Political, cultural and military architecture have remained intact
and almost inviolate.
7. The political edifice, which was constructed on a pragmatic philosophy of
shared burden of needs, rights and responsibilities, provided opportunity for human
centered development, which was made possible by the existence of strong institutions.

By their traditions, sacredness and rituals, all Yoruba institutions were created to be
stronger than any individual but imbued with better opportunities to encourage the
emergence of strong individuals.
8. Indeed, the demands and responsibilities of these institutions created enough
impetus for the emergence of individuals who must by all means sustain the traditions
generally associated with the institutions and which were first and foremost, the
promotion of the good of the state and society.
9. In all of the states fashioned after the Oyo example or model, Yoruba culture and
its derivative attributes provided the sinews and strength of the system that produced
what the President described as ‘successful internalization of religion, ethnicity and
politics’. Progressive values were brilliantly built into the sustaining ethos and character
of Yoruba institutions that were deliberately created to serve the interests of not just the
state, but of its inhabitants irrespective of socio-political and economic status. Each
institution also had its own spiritual, sacred and human essences to serve as guide.
10. Distinguished audience, ladies and gentlemen, I have since realized that the
greatness of the Alaafin is a function of his preparedness and capacity to remain
faithfully committed to the sacred requirements of the throne, bear true allegiance to his
oath of office and pragmatically apply the wisdom he must have received at the Ilofi in
the management of the affairs of state. In traditional Yoruba land, the Ilofi remains the
most prestigious school of statecraft and statesmanship. It provides opportunity for
comprehensive training in history, philosophy theosophy, metaphysics, jurisprudence,
astronomy, culture and traditions. It is however unfortunate and regrettable that many so
called contemporary rulers bear their titles in name only and not in character generally

associated with an Oba. It is trite that many of these portfolio rulers neglected, avoided
or even trivialized ancient knowledge that is only available to them at the Ilofi. (I hope
to return to this issue at a later date, not too far from now). The Oba, properly so called,
is traditional, natural and mystical. Today, many rulers are merely occupants of
traditional stools with little or no attributes as natural and mystical rulers.
11. Mr. Chairman, the title of Aare-Ona-Kakanfo of Yoruba land is no mean title
judging by its antecedents, requirements and exploits. I OBA LAMIDI OLAYUWOLA
ADEYEMI III ALAAFIN OF OYO AND KING OF YORUBALAND decided to
confer the title of Are-Ona-Kakanfo of Yoruba land with all rights, responsibilities and
privileges on Otunba Gani Adams, a Yoruba from Ogbagi Akoko as the 15th holder of
the title after secular and spiritual consultations. It is gratifying that despite the
seemingly long break or absence of an occupant, the title of Are-Ona-Kakanfo is still
very popular, excitingly interesting enough to arrest the attention of people all over the
world and provoke discussions even more in the social media.
12. For the avoidance of doubt and perhaps more importantly, to provide the most
authoritative opinion on the title, duties, sacredness, mysteries and continuing relevance
of the Are-Ona-Kakanfo. I wish to make the following points:
1. The conferment of the title of Are-Ona-Kakanfo was and remains the exclusive
imperial prerogative of the Alaafin of Oyo and king of Yoruba land. The Alaafin
sits on the only Imperial throne in Yoruba land. Arguably, the only Empire built
by the Yoruba and known to the world was the Oyo Empire. All other Empire
arrangements were at best Chiefdoms and Kingdoms. If Oyo was the only
Empire, it stands to reason that only the Alaafin could be imperial and Majestic.

The title of Are-Ona-Kakanfo was a military title created by the Alaafin to
recognize and define the leadership of the Oyo army. Again, let me quickly
remind my audience, that it was only the Oyo Empire that had a standing army
in defense of the integrity of the Empire and to enforce the authority of the
Alaafin, even in distant provinces. No other Yoruba Kingdom or political entity
had a standing army. Even, the military state of Ibadan did not have a standing
army. At the peak of her military exploits, Ibadan relied on the services provided
by the private armies of the important military chiefs and not a standing state
army.
2. It is also important for us to know that the Alaafin could appoint any man of
Yoruba descent as the Are-Ona-Kakanfo because the Alaafin is the king of
Yoruba land. A list of all previous are would confirm that they came from
different sub ethnicities in Yoruba land.

13. From the antecedents, exploits and charisma of the above listed individuals the
next point is affirmed and evidenced. The conferment of the title of Are-Ona_kakanfo is
recognition of gallantry personal valour and outstanding commitment to the best interest
of Yorubaland. The title is the exclusive reserve of the bravest of the brave, the man
with a lion heart: fearless and determined. It should be pointedly stated that the title
holder represents the interest of the Yoruba race and has the spiritual support of the
ancestors of our race. It is not a ceremonial or honorary title for personal
aggrandizement or political advantage. It is a call to service and the symbol of the
collective security of the Yoruba.
I believe and fully persuaded that the Yoruba have, over the years, provided a solid
anchor for the social-political and economic stability of Nigeria as a country. This is
largely so, because Oyo socio-cultural traditions have promoted solidarity and unity
among the Yoruba, making the Yoruba culture not only pragmatic, but equally
hegemonic and progressively so. The only Empire built on the socio-political,
intellectual foundation of Yoruba civilization was the old Oyo Empire which is
continuing here in the present dispensation. I have committed my brain, brawn and
other resources, at the expense of personal gains and pleasure, to the promotion,
preservation and prestige of the Yoruba culture and heritage. Needless to say. I have
remained faithful to my oath of allegiance as the Alaafin and kept faithfully to the
natural and spiritual requirements of the office in the discharge of my duties and roles
Today, it is convenient to speak of the beauty and glory of our culture because some
people paid and some more are paying the price. Yoruba culture is enduring, because
some of us are prepared to pay the price, even if it requires our lives. Among the
Yoruba of noble birth, “N o le waku, o le joye ile baba re”. “I can’t make the ultimate

sacrifice is not a saying of honour”. Yoruba ancient mysticism and power speak of
death as one of the fundamental phenomena of the universe. It comes at a time when the
external environment forces exceed the powers of adaptation built into one necrophilius
mitochondrion of the cells, which we call living organism. If the mitchochondrion is
destroyed, the power house of the cell is destroyed. No medical expert could invent,
create or grow these mitochondria in any laboratory no matter its sophistication in
equipment and knowledge. What kills an organism is external and hence the wisdom to
protect life by protecting the environment and safeguarding self from destruction. In
Oyo, this ancient wisdom talks of life and death as God’s greatest inventions. The
exercise of power must therefore be in reverence to this eternal truth. Death is
Death is one thing that
must end the other invention that is life. Without death, there is no life and without life,
we would not have known anything called death. The divinity of the Alaafin is shrouded
in the mystery of life and death. As Iku Baba Yeye, the Alaafin is death and cannot
therefore live in the fear of death. Nothing frustrates human progress and good life than
the fear of death.
CONCLUDING REMARKS
Every Are-Ona-Kakanfo had the opportunity to contribute his own quota to the greater
glory of Yoruba land. The office does not carry with it a death sentence. As people of
faith, the Yoruba believe that each creation of God has a destiny to fulfill and God, the
creator, has a purpose for every life He created. Today, Otunba Ganiyu Adams has a
mandate and a charge to protect, promote, safeguard and enlarge the interests of the
Yoruba at home and in the Diaspora. As I have said somewhere else, Yoruba culture is

the most international of all African cultures. It is unique in many respects and
considered to be of advanced civilization in content and application. The most insidious
challenge facing our race and civilization today is oneness of purpose. We are indeed
better together as one race, one civilization, one destiny and one success story. There is
a most urgent need to rebuild our home and defenses in the face of imminent assault on
the culture, traditions and spaces we hold as dear as a race. It is becoming obvious, that
the Nigerian state as presently constituted and managed by this present generation of
political elite is due for profound political configuration or restructuring and socio-
economic re-engineering. The crises within the state and among members of the
political class, the suspicion, hatred and hostilities among ethnic nationalities and the
seemingly breakdown of the capacity of the state to enforce its will and laws, exercise
power in the true sense of the word, resolve emerging conflicts and equitably
redistribute national wealth are all at the heart of the unity of the nation. The Nigerian
national question has assumed a far more frightening and dangerous dimension which
has compromised the capacity of the state to reduce tension and separatist agitations,
arrest the drift toward secession and ensure the safety of life and property. The signs are
ominous that the last days of the Lugaedian contraption are just around the corner.
It is in the light of the above and within the context of the challenges we now face as an
ethnic nation that more than ever before, the genius of the Yoruba in Empire and state
building is required; first to fix the Yoruba land and people and put Yoruba land in a fit
and proper position to fix Nigeria. It is undeniable that the political and social
consciousness, sophistication and importantly, sacrifice of the Yoruba had been largely
responsible for holding the country together as one country. Historically, the Yoruba
culture has the capacity to absorb and ameliorate centrifugal tendencies and rise above
petty acrimonies or separatist self determination to build stable and progressive

kingdoms and Empire. The success story of Oyo which lasted for more than 600 years,
would confirm the efficiency of a political order which was constructed on a most
progressive political philosophy, sound intellectual tradition and pragmatic governance
ethos. The inherent value system provided opportunity for the emergence of an ideology
that supported cultural homogeneity as the basis of unity.
Today, as I receive you here in Oyo, Yoruba land need the wisdom of the Crown Heads,
the intellect of the intelligentsia, the support of the mass of Yoruba people and the unity
of all. The political class has once again been exposed as incapable of providing the
sinews of unity and oneness of purpose in a multi ethnic Nigeria. Events over the
weekend have sadly reinforced our position that Yoruba men and women are gradually
being schemed out of reckoning in Nigeria.
My choice and appointment of Otunba Gani Adams from Arigidi Akoko as Are-Ona-
Kakanfo of Yoruba land was a strategic and altruistic decision based on my
understanding of the need of Yoruba land. I wish to request that you support him and
sustain him in office as he stands in the vanguard for the protection of the interest of
Yoruba land.
Yoruba land must not be allowed to play second fiddle in the scheme of things in
Nigeria. We as leaders must be conscious of our patriotic duty to our people. In the
immortal words of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, asiwaju ni wa nile Yoruba.
Mr. Chairman, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, I want to thank you very sincerely

DISCURSO DO ALAAFIN DE OYO
INSTALAÇÃO DO 15º AARE ONAKAKANFO DA TERRA YORUBA NA CIDADE
DE OYO, 13 DE JANEIRO DE 2018
AARE ONAKAKANFO: CELEBRAÇÃO DA TERRA YORUBA
A história
No exercício deste poder, o Alaafin designou no passado o grande guerreiro e

atendimento corta as linhas partidárias.
desafios modernos do nosso tempo.

este respeito, A RESTANTE NIGERIA PODERIA APRENDER DOS ESTADOS
DO SUDOESTE TENDO CONSEGUIDO COM SUCESSO A
INTERNALIZACÃO DE RELIGIÃO, ETNIA E POLÍTICA "(minhas as

autorizada sobre o título, deveres, sacralidades, mistérios e relevância contínua do Are-
Ona-Kakanfo.
O Alaafin fica no

"A morte é
Nada frustra o progresso humano e a boa
