Director Direction
Spine of the Play Resiliency through adversity in
the endless pursuit for love.
Style of Production The overall style of production
would follow more of a selective realism route. Due to the many scene changes, the set will be fairly simple. The characters will interact in a realistic fashion giving the audience a truth to life representation of the times.
Directorial Concept
A. PERIOD
a. Sixteenth century Europe using traditional attire during the period.
b. Majority of the play will be located at a skeleton campsite in the Forest of Arden. The forest setting should have a jovial mood in comparison to the solemn mood of the French court.
B. PURPOSE
a. The purpose of the play will be as near as possible to the original intent of the script.
C. CENTRAL METAPHOR
a. The central metaphor of the play will be the power of uncontrolled emotion.
b. The love, anger, and rage are all emotions uncontrolled in individual characters at different points which can determine the choices made by the characters.
The Physical ProductionLighting Design- The Court lighting will focus on the bleak mood with darkened areas on stage and spot light use. The forest lighting will focus on lots of bright colors to incite the warmth and desire of love and happiness.
Set Design- The Court will be simple and minimalist in contrast to the vibrant forest. Although the overall set will be minimal the use of some forest props will greatly enhance the scenes.
Costume Design- Traditional 16th century garb will be using for the characters.

Movement, Rhythm, & Pace
The play will move quickly from the early scenes in the Court. This allows time for the drama of the plot to build up in the forest and keeps from taking too much from this focus. Although the pace will be quick during the first act, the slow initial build-up in the forest will give the audience time to absorb the conflict of the de Bois brothers and the Duke’s.
The Audience’s Eye
The grandeur of the proscenium stage should show majesty of the play. It will give the audience the best view with multiple characters are interacting whether it is simple dialogue or a fight scene. Also, the distance of the audience allows to see the whole of the play without being so close that the focus is on the individual components.
