TODAY WE CELEBRATE THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION

Reception of Holy Communion is open to confirmed members of the Lutheran Church—

Missouri Synod who repent of all sins and understand that they receive Christ’s true Body

and Blood, as well as bread and wine, for the forgiveness of their sins. If you are not a

member of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, we respectfully request you speak with

the Pastor before communing. This practice is prompted by love both for God’s Word and

God’s people. Those who are not communing today are invited forward for a blessing.

Please cross your arms across your chest for the blessing. A good tool for use in preparing to

receive Holy Communion is found on pages 329-330 of the hymnal. For further study,

please see: Matthew 5:23-24, 18:15-35, 26:26-29; Acts 2:42; Romans 16:17; 1 Corinthians

10:16-17, 11:17-33.

AS WE GATHER

Though we have died with Christ in Holy Baptism, and we are raised to new life in Him,

we find “another law waging war” in our body and life, that is, between our old Adam and

the new man (Rom. 7:23). By the Spirit of Christ, we “desire to do what is right,” but we

are not able to do so because “nothing good” dwells in our sinful flesh (Rom. 7:18).

“Thanks be to God,” therefore, “through Jesus Christ our Lord,” who delivers us from

“this body of death” (Rom. 7:24-25). We rejoice in Him, our gentle King, who comes

“righteous and having salvation” (Zech. 9:9). He speaks peace to our embattled hearts,

and by His blood of the New Testament He sets us “free from the waterless pit,” and He

returns us to the stronghold of our Baptism (Zech. 9:10-12). Though we “labor and are

heavy laden,” He calls us to Himself and gives rest to our souls through His free and full

forgiveness (Matt. 11:28), not because we are “wise and understanding,” but by the

“gracious will” of God the Father, whom “the Son chooses to reveal” in love (Matt.

11:25-27).

P: O almighty God, merciful Father,

C: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities

with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal

and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely

repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake

of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son,

Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained

servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the

stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins

in the name of the Father and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit. [John 20:19-23]

C: Amen.

NICENE CREED

C: I believe in one God,

the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth

and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the only-begotten Son of God,

begotten of His Father before all worlds,

God of God, Light of Light,

very God of very God,

begotten, not made,

being of one substance with the Father,

by whom all things were made;

who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven

and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary

Page 7: AS WE GATHER - divinesaviorlc.org

and was made man;

and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.

He suffered and was buried.

And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures

and ascended into heaven

and sits at the right hand of the Father.

And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,

whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord and giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,

who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,

I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,

and I look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of † the world to come. Amen. Us men means all people.

Christian: the ancient text reads “catholic,”

meaning the whole Church as it confesses the

wholeness of Christian doctrine.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ANNIVERSARIES & BIRTHDAYS THIS WEEK—Congratulations to Robert Martin (9th). Our prayers and God’s blessings go with him as he celebrates his “day.”

CHURCH COUNCIL—The Church Council will meet today, following the Divine Service. We’ll also be setting up the Fellowship Hall for the meal next Sunday. Members of the Anniversary Committee are also asked to attend this meeting. Visit with Chairman Jim Danner for more information. ANNIVERSARY SERVICE—NEXT SUNDAY, July 12, the Rev. Odis Doyal, fourth Called Pastor of Divine Savior, will be here as the Guest Proclaimer in the Divine Service. He will also lead Bible Class this day (in the Sanctuary), sharing about his ministry here at Divine Savior. A meal will be served by a small group of volunteers, with all of the proper health precautions, after the Divine Service. Plan to welcome back Pastor Doyal and Carol as a part of our 30th Anniversary Celebrations, and invite a friend to join you. FOOD PANTRY—We’re resuming our monthly ingathering for the Devine Food Pantry. While you may bring any non-perishable food item, next Sunday we are collecting macaroni & cheese. Visit with the Chair of our Human Care Board, Blasa Carrillo, for more information. SOCIAL DISTANCE—Please remember to social distance while in the Sanctuary and Narthex. Once the service is over, please exit the Narthex and socialize at a six-foot distance in the parking lot or under the trees. Holy Communion is a “walk by” format, there is no formal gathering of the offering, no handshaking, and no Bible Class or Sunday School at this time. Please keep 2-3 chairs separating non-household members in the same row. MATTHEW 11:28—“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Jesus has come to do the work so that we might have rest from burdens and labors we are not capable of bearing. He frees us from sin, death, and the demands of the Law. In that peace and rest of Jesus we find a new purpose. His light yoke, which is no burden to bear, is a joy.
