THEN, THEY STUMBLED UPON THE BARN AT LANG FARM. The last place Mandy Buigas expected to meet her future husband was on a blind date arranged by her mother, but true love works in funny ways. For weeks, Mandy’s mom and a family friend had tempted Mandy with a mystery man named Andrew Bokan, who they insisted would be just perfect for her. Every time they mentioned him, Mandy responded with a definite—and vehement—“No.” Eventually, Mandy decided to take matters into her own hands and onto Facebook, friending Andrew online. “I accepted Mandy’s friend request on a Wednesday, and on Saturday we were eating sushi and having drinks at an Irish pub,” remembers Andrew. “We never looked back.” Putting aside their initial reluctance to meet, the new couple rapidly made up for lost time, spending nearly every weekend together and emailing or talking on the phone almost every day throughout their busy weeks. “I think we both knew pretty quickly that this was it,” says Mandy. essex,vt 10.02.2010 LAUREN STAGNITTI PHOTOGRAPHY BEFORE THE RING.

THE PROPOSAL. As summer of 2010 began, Andrew arranged a relaxing and romantic getaway to Nantucket—a location that holds a special place in the pair’s hearts, as it was the very first spot they vacationed together. Their first day on the island was dreary and foggy, which did not fit well with Andrew’s plan of a dazzling beach proposal. Unable to wait, Andrew relinquished his grand attempts, pulling Mandy out onto the beach, where, in the midst of the fog, he got down on one knee in the sand to ask her to be his wife.

THE DETAILS. As the couple began to make their wedding dreams come true, it became even more important to Mandy and Andrew to incorporate pieces of their family history and traditions. They decided to emphasize the important roles held by their family members by including pieces from their past in their wedding. Mandy had a piece of her mom’s wedding day handkerchief, made by her grandmother, sewn into her wedding dress, and they used Andrew’s grandparents’ cake topper, which the original couple had used more than 70 years before. “They both attended the wedding, and it felt like great luck to use the same cake topper as two people who have stayed together and in love for so long,” says Mandy. Both the bride and groom’s favorite elements came in the form of quintessential Vermont foods—Ben & Jerry’s ice cream for Mandy and Magic Hat #9 beer for Andrew.
