    Question:

There are ten encasement beams in the original contract that have been changed to a reinforced concrete

beam detail in response to Power’s RFI 106. As the work has proceeded we have noted that 7 of the 10 beams

have an angled concrete encapsulated steel beam that intercepts the beam we are required to repair. These

beams are not shown on the drawings and result in additional demolition, rebar splices, and formwork in order

to complete the contract repairs. We feel we have the information to complete these repairs, but the additional

time required should be at extra cost.

    Suggestion:

    Answer: Date Answered: 11/29/2012

Please proceed with repair. Specified new rebar in beam needs to continue through the angled beam

    Question:

There are ten encasement beams in the original contract that have been changed to a reinforced concrete

beam detail in response to Power’s RFI 003. The repair requires dowels 7 EA #8 dowels at each end of the

beam. When the East end of the new concrete beams intercepts a pile we have good concrete to dowel into.

However the beams being encased are spaced approximately 5’ on center and the piles are approximately 15’

on center. The intermediate beams between piles join a steel encased concrete beam similar to the one being

repaired. This is unreinforced concrete which is not efficient for the dowels to be placed.

At these beam locations we could weld the bar to the perpendicular North-South beam flange or web in place

    of dowels?

As a secondary option, should the dowels at the East end be installed with hooks placed through the web of

the perpendicular beam? This would allow us to pour the beam and create a beam pocket on the East side of

the North-South intercepting beam. This beam pocket could be reinforced or doweled up into the slab above to

    tie the two beams together?

    Question:

RFI 111 gave reinforcement details for a new reinforced concrete

beam. The reinforcement will exist both where the bottom flange

is intact and where it is deteriorated. We assumed that the bottom

bars would be installed below the bottom flange of the steel beam

to provide containment for the concrete beam. RFI 112 indicates

that the bottom bars of the new reinforced beam are placed above

the bottom flange of the steel beam leaving the concrete below

    unreinforced.

We would propose to install the reinforcement below the flange of

the existing beam. At the East end of the beam where we need to

connect to an existing steel beam running North South addressed in

RFI 112, we could install “Z” shaped bars to lap the new steel. The

middle bar will have to be placed through the bottom flange in

order to be embedded in the North South beam. See attached

    sketches.

    Is this acceptable?

    Please advise.

They shall be installed below bottom of the flange. As for RFI 112, the "lapping" rebar being attached to girder

will be installed as shown in the sketch. Please have field crew talk to Tim with that sketch.-Richard Rhee
