Nota do editor Publisher‘s note
Fui assistindo a muitas
(passado)
Acontecimento 1 - Exposição OVER LAPINGS no edifício do Museu da Electricidade
em Belém, Lisboa, Outubro de 2011. Uma amostra do engenho da comunicação
de seis gabinetes de arquitectura portuguesa. Não estando representados,
encontrei-os lá, o José e o Nuno.
Memória 1 – Recuei a 1993.

It was just about this time of year, some twenty years ago, that I first heard
about ARX.
It was in a special issue of the magazine Architécti entitled Portugal 1991 which
revealed 49 projects, including not only the most renowned architects in the
panorama of contemporary Portuguese architecture but also some of the rising
stars (who were then becoming known for their works) as well as the new blood of
the Mateus brothers.
The project for the Technology and Administration School by José and Nuno
Mateus was characterised by a pronounced graphic representation that I was
later also to link to their still recently fresh connections with the studios of Peter
Eisemann and Daniel Libeskind.
(Present)
This record in book form of 20 projects built, thought up or currently under
construction by ARX was the result of a slow process of conversations and
approaches that occurred over the last few years. I witnessed many of their
ideas as they materialised in innumerable studies of models which, like the
drawings, emerged from rough sketches to become more elaborate objects.
Perhaps because of that reason and also as I found no precise reason, to write
something on these houses (which I have never visited), I decided to select two
recent events which aroused fragments of my memory (past).
1st Event – The OVERLAPPINGS exhibition at the Electricity Museum in Belém,
Lisbon in October 2011. A display of the art of communication by six
Portuguese architecture studios. Although not represented, I found both José
and Nuno there.
1st Memory – I went back to 1993. “Realidade Real”, the ARX exhibition which
inaugurated Belém Cultural Centre.
Having been the first of its kind that I had ever seen I have retained to this day
flashes and mixes of the audiovisual information shown. Drawings, images,
sounds, multimedia effects, 3D models in different scales, all served to represent
different realities between themselves and also of reality itself. “One or many”
models of investigation on display allowed the visitor to take part in a certain

Nota do editor Publisher‘s note
a imaginar, a ouvir e a sentir.
Movo-me e vou descobrindo novas direcções para o olhar .

JOSÉ MANUEL DAS NEVES born in Lourenço Marques, Moçambique. Graduated in History of Art by Literature Faculty of Lisbon University, followed by a course in painting, drawing, aesthetics and theories of contemporary art S.N.B.A (Nacional Fine Arts Society). He has began working in the editorial field as an assistant to the board of the magazine Architécti and then went on as a colaborator of the editorial board (architecture and design) of the following maganizes: Arte e Construção, Artes Plásticas, Casa e Decoração and Máxima Interiores. Took part in the Fio de Prumo project. Editor and founder of the archiotecture and design division of Estar Editora, Edições Asa, Caleidoscópio and True Team. Author/Editor of the Architecture Yearbook (from n. 1 to n. 11) and directed the magazine Arquitectura Ibérica (from n.1 ao n.31). Since 2010 he is editor of UzinaBooks and continues to concentrate on investigating and disseminating contemporary architecture and design.
conceptual complicity by interacting with the forms and the volumes and so
building their “own” reality. More than any other code inherent to this event,
this in particular greatly impressed me.
Event nº 2– “Sangue do meu Sangue”, a Portuguese film by João Canijo, November
2011. To reproduce the banality of many lives which are really only one, the
director films the characters in what are almost closed plans. He hovers over the
spaces in which they move within the walls of inhabited houses. The “camera”
moves slowly and crops people, conversations and stories as if they were unique
pieces, which they are not, for they blend into the real life that continues
simultaneously in a background which we are not shown but are always
imagining, hearing and sensing. A sort of real reality.
2nd Memory – I suddenly thought of the picture on the cover of a book
(Interiores+Interiors, ed. Estar). It is illustrated with a detail of an apartment
remodelled in the late nineties by ARX. A crack torn between two walls through
which we can peak inside the sitting room of an inhabited house.
Contrary to Canijo’s work I see no people here but only an erudition that flows
from the works and objects of art arranged in the apparent staticity of the
setting. As I move I discover new directions for my look.
I look for the book at home, discover it and find the moving wall as if it had been
“torn out” and the words then spoken by the Mateus brothers, which are so
topical that I am left feeling more reassured and relaxed.
“At the request of the owners of the house we designed a stone shelf for
the dining room; it extends the width of the room. It is a “line” running
the width of the space, of varying thickness and geometry as it changes
shape along the walls. First the windowsill, then a salience/shelf and finally
the shelf/sideboard.”
It happened.
PS. In November 2003 we published a short monograph together on Ílhavo
Maritime Museum which I had visited on various occasions.
Prefácio Preface
008
leitor do artefacto arquitectónico.
do vidro transparente (no entanto duro e firme) parece estar à parte, existindo e

In the ongoing debate around architecture and publishing, it is often said that the
challenge of the book or magazine editor is to create a “bridge” of sorts, a connection
of some kind that spans the physical distance that separates the reader and the
architectural artifact.
Reality is much more nuanced. The act of communicating architecture two-
dimensionally, on the surface of a page, calls into play an almost infinite number
of options. Which photographer? By daytime or night-time? Populated or devoid of
human presence? Staged or spontaneous? Cluttered or empty?
The photographs in this book highlight a particular tension between reality and
abstraction in the work of José and Nuno Mateus – a tension that brings to mind the
opening lines of Wassily Kandinsky’s book Point and Line to Plane, in which he calls
on an architectural metaphor to distinguishes experiencing a phenomenon:
Every phenomenon can be experienced in two ways. These two ways are not arbitrary, bit
are bound up with the phenomenon – developing out of its nature and characteristics:
Externally – or – inwardly.
The street can be observed through the windowpane, which diminishes its sounds so that
its movements become phantom-like. The street itself, as seen through the transparent
(yet hard and firm) pane seem set apart, existing and pulsating as if “beyond.”
The work of ARX could be said to call on this experiential dualism as a device for
structuring the architectural experience. Clear lines – that might sometimes appear
impenetrable – demarcate the boundary between interior and exterior. But the two
are not diconnected: there is an intentional distance that transforms the outside
world, the surrounding landscape and the urban context, into a “phantom-like”
presence. But then, as Kandinsky writes:
As soon as we open the door, step out of the seclusion and plunge into the outside
reality, we become an active part of this reality and experience its pulsation
with all our senses. The constantly changing grades of tonality and tempo of the
sounds wind themselves about us, rise spiritually and, suddenly, collapse.
This sudden “pulsation of the senses” provoked by the buzz and activity of urban life
is accentuated not only by the distance between the interior and its surroundings
but also by the monochromatic rigour of the architectural form in the landscape.
JOSEPH GRIMA
Prefácio Preface
010

In modern art, monochromatic painting is used as a recurring technique to reduce
the viewer’s experience to its most essential nature, hinting at the possibility of pure
experience. It is a strategy pioneered by another Russian, the suprematist Kazemir
Malevich (who, like Kandinsky, lectured at the Bauhaus), with his White on White
composition of 1918, but it recurs on a regular basis throughout the 20th century:
even in 1951, the artistic community at Black Mountain College is shocked by
Rauschenberg’s White Paintings – uninflected all-white surfaces that “eliminate all
gesture and deny all possibility of narrative or external reference”.
White is the colour of neutrality, genericity, the sum of all other colours, the most
intense and at the same time the most abstract architectural statement. For sure,
it serves a practical purpose – white and light colors reflect the heat in southern
climates – but it also a statement of allegiance to the modernist ideals that
engendered the Bauhaus-inspired White City of Tel Aviv. It is the colour through
which the architect’s unapologetic investment in the creation of an undiluted spatial
experience is articulated.
Architecture struggles with more concrete challenges than art, and as such must
make more compromises. Kandinsky concludes the opening paragraph of Point
and Line to Plane thus: “The work of art mirrors itself upon the surface of our
consciousness”. Architecture does too, albeit in differently: its image does not vanish
from the surface without a trace when the intensity of the artistic experience has
subsided. It is a physical presence that must negotiate its identity in relation to
its surroundings on a daily basis. The work of José and Nuno Mateus is invested in
this mediation, and in preserving the intensity of the architectural experience, both
externally and inwardly.

CASA LEIRIA
LEIRIA HOUSE
The house is located in a "typical" peripheric urbanization of Pousos, a parish of the municipality of Leiria. Situated east of the city and at high ground, it works as a sort of panoramic belvedere over Leiria.
So as to assure for more space and complete access to the faraway view, the owners bought the three lots ahead, over the "cliff".
Although each lot allowed for the construction of a basement and two more storeys, usually compacted and isolated in the centre of the lot, this assemblage allowed the possibility of having a lower house, which "embraced" portions of garden space. When we went to the place the first time, the streets surrounding the lot had already been made and, because of the earth displacement necessary for the street making, the land rose suddenly, starting from the sidewalk, like a suggestive construction of a topographic nature. On the surroundings, all the neighbour houses were already built and circled the lot in an "L" shape configuration.
The conception of the house emerges directly from the way we observed this reality. Dealing with a single-family house of large dimensions for local standards, we chose to divide the construction volume in two parts. Half of the construction is buried, like a negative of the land, and assumed as being a part of it. Over that half-land, a second volume is placed, long and flattened, in apparent white concrete.
In the lower volume are located the technical areas, the less used areas or those of support. In the upper volume the socials areas gather around a main courtyard, and the bedrooms around a private second one.
After all, the main characteristic of this house is the way its dialectical feature comes about: the underground, "natural" half of the building, its upper half, floating and "artificial", and the life flowing between the two. One face, introverted, intimate, of shadow or reflected light; another, open, glowing, transparent, from where it is possible to enjoy the distant horizon.
In the end, we wanted to understand the life and personality of those who come to us in search of a house design, and try to give them a new meaning for everyday life.

Visiting an extraordinary building provokes an intense emotion, difficult to express in words. All of us, at some time, have felt that incredible sensation, a mixture of delight to the eye and almost a tingling of the skin which awakens, irrevocably, a deep admiration for its creator. I have had the good fortune to dedicate myself to a profession which, apart from starting me down a path of utter love for Architecture, has allowed me to get to know in great depth the pro-cess, complex, extremely difficult and charged with responsibility, which makes the reality of a building possible, whatever its scale and country of origin may be.
Truly, it is a real privilege to use a building designed by someone who really knows his trade. But to live, as I live it, and on the front line, every stage of those discussions, as well as the incidents and obstacles which any construction involves, values much more intensely, the whole process that precedes and determines the outcome.

The site has a strong rural character, with small plantations, orchards and pathways limited by roughly made stone property walls and, once in a while, houses, scattered in the landscape. It is a steep slope facing south over the valley, furrowed by a small river and a mountain in the background.
In the transition of the landscape slopes, two clear references became the starting point for the project: a walnut tree and a watering tank. The first site visits immediately suggested a volume lying on the slope, facing the entrance walkway and sheltering the house from the neighbours while opening the interior views to the southern valley.
The site‘s natural beauty dictated the project. The house develops in an intimate relation with the ground: buried as the slope increases and eventually becoming part of the mountain where one can walk; floating while descending, detached from the slope.A long volume was then drawn, like a line folded over itself and over the water tank and the tree.
Between those elements the primary exterior space was created. Along the house volume, courtyards were excavated building spaces of intimacy and peace, generally lacking in an overexposed context: the entrance courtyard, the guestroom courtyard and the one of the corridor. The edges of this tubular form bifurcate interacting in different ways with the exterior: the end of the main room is narrow and high overlooking the eastern valley; the wide and low end of the living room is suspended over the southern valley.
The private area of the house is serviced by an austere corridor whose ends represent opposite realities: the northern one opens to an intimate courtyard dug on the ground whilst the southern one opens to vast landscape, with the walnut tree in the foreground and the mountain in the distance.
