1) Arunella;

‘‘For the betterment of the future generation’’

Arunella, organized by the Engineering Students’ Union (ESU) of Faculty of Engineering,

University of Peradeniya is far beyond a common charity program. Since the slight

beginning, it has become the heartbeat of a group of young engineering

undergraduates, who had the ambition to serve the country’s future with an

educational aid.

Twilights of the Arunella program fell in to the Faculty of Engineering in 2000, when an

idea was created to form a fund to provide economical support for the undergraduates

of the faculty of Engineering, for those who were suffering from economical

deprivations. Over the years this program sprouted step by step and was spread over

various directions to enlighten not only the lives of faculty undergraduates, but also

the lives of the students from various parts of the country who are following school

education.

Arunella program is consisted with three phases, namely

• Arunella seminar series • Arunella social projects • Arunella scholarship programs

i) Arunella Seminar Series

The main objective of the Arunella seminar series is to aid the GCE ordinary level (O/Ls)

students in rural areas, who have difficulties in learning mathematics and science

subjects due to the scarcity of teachers and other facilities. There is no doubt GCE

Ordinary level exam is the first gateway to the higher education. Therefore it is a

timely need to help those less privileged students to continue the education while not

falling behind due to any political or socio-economic reason. Fortunately, the

Engineering students’ Union who initiated the Arunella program saw this and

formulated an effective program to fulfil that gap in the Sri Lankan education system

as far as they can.

Under the Arunella seminar program, the students of the Faculty of Engineering visit

such school students in weekends and conduct tutorials and theoretical seminars

according to the school syllabuses. Every year, students from various schools gathered

in number of centres all over the country, to participate in this seminar program every

year.
