The design research involved sketching up end-user extreme stereotypes, to keep different kinds of user habits in mind, while also considering viewpoints of secondary users like janitors and service crew. Differenct aspects of toilet etiquette in the Muslim culture were also studied as the unitswere being designed for installation in the Middle-East. Focus was to make the entire operation at the facilty completely touch free. One unit was to be for use by handicapped people. Care wastaken to provide additional support and adequate space for the same.

User Research

User Research

The project was for designing automated public toilets for installation in the Middle East. The client would make revenue from selling ad space on the walls of the utility, hence focus was on finding innovative ways to display advertisements, while giving the building a distinct identity.

Experience design for Milan Design Week 2014For Officine TamborrinoAt Milan Design WeekFeb-Mar 2014

Goals

Concept & Exhibit

To design an experience for Officine Tamborrino’s exhibit at the Milan Design Week, highlighting the values of the company. The company made modular steel furniture for home and office use.

Concept Actual pictures from Design Week exhibit

About OTOfficine Tamborrino is a two-year old project by Scaff Systems who specialized in steel mezzanines. This year’s exhibit at Ventura Lambrate Zone of Milan Design Week required an interactive experience to engage visitors, while conveying the principal characteristics of the product identity.

The WorkA team of 4 students helped OT design and realise the ‘interactive wall’ using product tiles held onto a steel wall using magnets. Changing positions of the object showcased modularity of the offering and the magnets emphasized the usage of steel. As a class of MDS students, we also conceived a ‘stamp’ catalouge and a viral marketing campaign.

To design a service for a futuristic soceity where members are co-producers. Teams had to forecast scenarios in the future, considering new trends and social behaviours.

Teams were given cards to expxlore diverse trends predicted for the future. We selected ‘Home Hospi-tal’ ‘Active Farming Classes’ ‘Sustainability Learni-ng’ & ‘Sustainable Companionship.’

WorkThe team of 4 designed a service in Health-care, based in Mexico City, where a soceity would engage in community services like farming as a part of a sustainable preventive health-care system. We conceived a vision, the service blueprint, and enacted a skit to depict the storyboard for the end-user.

Designing an Exhibitionwith Marco SammichelliAt Politecnico di Milano2 week workshop - Jan 2014

The team of four visited various museums in Milan. We selected items which inspired us to paint the story about the certainities & fantasies of ancient sailors. Besides the mood of the curation, we also designed an atmosphere, layout and chose a apt location for the exhibit.

By exploring the archives of the house museums located in Milan, select some works and plan the project for a temporary exhibition. Develop a curatorial statement, discuss the curatorial approach and method used for selection of works.

The exhibit was inspired from some of the brilliant displays at Poldi Pezzoli, and from the projected dreams of sailors in the 14th-16th century.

Storytellingwith Paola TrapaniAt Politecnico di Milano1 week workshop - Apr 2014

Conducted interviews of designers and artists who collaborated for exhibitions. Studied actantial models, semiotic squares and canonical narrative schemes for articulating the proposed service as a dramatic story. Made a sketch for a narrative video for the service ‘The odd couple’ as described. Chose the story as a treasure hunt by a pirate and his captain as comrades, with the service as a ‘helper’.Images for the representational presentation were taken from a movie ‘The Pirates’, who own copyrights.

To explore the techniques of storytelling, going to the source of the traditional corpus of narrative semiotics. We developed a narrative storyboard for the descri-ption of a service designed for the Milan Design W-eek.

To study the synergies between designer & artist in a space& skill sharing collobaration for exhibitions, we spoke to practicers in Tortona and Ventura zones.

The project was carried out by a team of 4 students. After factory visits and intensive research about various applications, we developed the concept of a ‘Talking City’ in which colourful mosaics of rubber granules are made into mats, for info communication at public transport stops. We designed concepts for the mats and explored the possibility of partnering with JC Decaux for approaching the target audience. A ‘floating city’ model of Milan city was made as a representative tool for showcasing suspension of exisiting channels in advent of the ‘6th wall.’

To develop strategies for applications of EPDM rub-ber granules generated by tyre recycling, potentially bringing the outcome in public eye.

The material has been typically used for producing in construction and flooring industries, playgrounds and football fields. We expanded the use in the mass communication, proposing the ‘6th wall of touch’

Business Design for Retailwith Claudio Dell’eraAt Politecnico di Milano1 week workshop - Feb 2014

The team of six students, used polarities models to develop four different scenarios, which were avenues in which innovation could be introduced. These would lead to diffferent strategies. After developing concepts for each scenario, one concept was taken further. We developed storyboards to present the idea.

To design a new retail experience for luxury brands, combing inputs from design and business. Design students at Politecnico collaborated with MBA students from MIP school of management for the work.

For Salvatore Ferragamo, inspiration was gathered from the heritage of the company which specialized in custom shoes for the perfect fit.

Individual project, overseen by the Senior Design Manager in New Product Development division. The fixtures are represented in dark grey and were made by me. The welding job is in light grey and are the company’s design.

The assembly of the front frame of this 5 ton wheel loader required welding each plate in a ‘flat’ position to prevent flow of metal while welding. Consequently maneuvering a 1500+ kg job and holding it still while a joint is brought into this desired position would require enormous amounts of physical labor.

To design a process and set of fixtures for assembly of the front frame of a 5 tonne wheel loader.

From the wheel. The constraints required the job to be welded in horizontal positions only. The mainframe was designed to hold and rotate the job to bring it into the requried positions sequentially.

Solution

The figures show how the components would be mounted on the mainframe, and go step by step to attain the appropriate welding position. The reference man has been shown to represent the ergonomics.

The design solution provides for a basic frame on which the plates are mounted and rotated about an axis perpendicular to the plane of symmetry. Grooves provided in the frame hold the job fixed whenever a joint comes into the flat position. Removable fixtures are then fixed onto the frame, which locate, hold and clamp the plate to be welded.

The front frame goes through five different fixed positions; each position having a fixture designed for plates to be welded in that position. The fixtures are, as far as possible fixed to the basic frame using a set of removable hangers.

Two smaller sub-assemblies were made to be welded together separately before being welded onto the main job. These had their own set of sma-ller sub-fixtures. The final mainframe concept was reached after conducting a mechanical strength and stability analysis.

Care was taken to make modular units, reducing material usage, and minimized welding time increasing efficiency.
