The static Eternity

Created by:Gao Rong Born 1986, Baotou City, Inner Mongolia, Lives and works in Beijing, China

A Little about the ArtistGao Rong grew up with Chinese embroidery where both her mother and grandmother would mkae beautiful embroidery as a hobby.

Chinese Embroidery is losing its initial value due to the loss of skill in this area.

Traditional embroidery artists created images of birds, animal and flowers from fine thread.

Gao Rong uses embroidery to create sculpture like art pieces, every detail stitched on fabric wrapped around sponge stiffened by steel frames and wire.

Instead of creating images of birds, animal and flowers, she instead sews perfect replicas of peeling paint, rusty pipes, old framed photo and transport schedules. Most art pieces are taken from her personal life experiences.

What is the art AboutFor the art piece "The Static Eternity", Gao Rong created this art in memory of her recently deceased grandmother. Her grandmother were one of the people who taught her how to create art with Chinese embroidery.

The art "The Static Eternity" recreates the tiny home where her grandmother used to live.

Each piece takes months of work and countless thousands of stitches. The outcome shows a realistic looking art pieces which is entirely made out of thread.

This realism can be seen as all parts of the artwork is made out of thread.

Inspiration from Art

Source: The inspiration from “Source“ gave me the idea to attach the environment to what the

audience is doing. The shadows in the art made me believe there was someone there with me while I walked

through the art piece. Instead of the audience themselves walking through the art I got the idea to have the the

shadow version of the audience move through a digital environment “Source” used a soothing ocean environment and I thought to me the most soothing

environment is when I'm on holidays and my favorite holiday is Christmas

Sibyl This art really drags me into the Christmas spirit and feeling. I remember how disappointed I

was when I first arrived in Sydney. I thought I was going to have my first white Christmas as i group up in Thailand. I then realized Christmas time in Australia is during Summer and it is just as hot as it is in Thailand..

Sibyl to me is like a white Christmas therefore it really inspired me to create a white Christmas theme for my ideation. I believe this idea will be fun for the audience and the Christmas theme will be a good idea since our exhibition will be around Christmas time.

The Audience is able to interact with Sibyl and this gave me even more inspiration. Just like the Sibyl art I want to bring my artwork to life when you touch it. This inspired me

to use audience interaction to bring life into my artwork as and trigger sound and animation

The static Eternity The static eternity artwork inspired me as everything in the art has its own story. The fabric

used brings to life the story behind every object displayed and this inspired me. Every object has it purpose to be there and tell its story, this makes me want to create a

room environment for my project A simple room that every object has its own purpose to be there and meant to tell the story

behind it.

The Concept: Christmas Shadow

A dark quiet room, audience can only see shadows of objects in living room during Christmas time.

Kinect is pointing to the audience and the projector pointing toward to the wall, Shadow moves like mirror.

The human shadow audience see is just a fake shadow capture by Kinect and projector onto the wall.

When audience shadow touch with object on the wall, it will trigger animation and sound by the time that audience walk to the end the whole room will be ready to celebrate Christmas.
