Welcome to another busy season at Wells Maltings. As the weather warms and the days lengthen, we promise to chase away the chills and cobwebs and spring clean your senses with an array of great theatre, film, exhibitions, music, workshops and much more.

Highlights for me include the return of fEAST Theatre, with the first of their tenth anniversary trio, a reprise of THE CANADA BOYS on 3 and 4 April. Handpicked from last year’s Edinburgh Fringe, I’m delighted to bring The Roaring Girls to the Norfolk coast with their hilarious and poignant take on our obsessions with body image in BEACH BODY READY on 30 April, and earlier in the month, on 2 April, PATRICK MONAHAN’s latest stand up show STARTED FROM THE BOTTOM; NOW I’M HERE.

We are also delighted to present Hollywood star James McEvoy in a new production of CYRANO DE BERGERAC on 20 February; Met Opera Live continues its season with highlights PORGY AND BESS on 8 February and TOSCA on 11 April; whilst ballet fans will not be disappointed with ROMEO AND JULIET (29 March) and JEWELS (19 April) live from Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet.

Great music too, from the return of VOODOO ROOM on 13 March and FLOYD IN THE FLESH on 17 April, to the irrepressible Matthew Preston and Benjamin Howell, also known as THE MISSING CODA, on 6 March. Look out for our monthly jazz nights on the second Wednesday of each month from February, starting with a personal favourite, JULIAN ARGUELLES, on 12 February.

We also launch a new series of our SALTMARSH talks in January under the title THE NORFOLK TABLE, celebrating the many facets and delights of our county’s food and drink heritage: there will be

samples!  TV’s own JULES HUDSON drops in for chat, anecdotes and special guests on 21 March, and the intrepid Jon Lawrence, whose 500km charity trek across five deserts on five continents made headlines, reflects on how this enormous feat helped him deal with his father’s death, on 20 March in GOOD GRIEF.

Look out also for art exhibitions in the Handa Gallery, including the return of the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists in February and Wells’s own Linda Pattrick and John Richter in April. We are also hugely honoured to stage the culmination exhibition from a major project with local schools FULL CIRCLE at the end of April.

Our PAY WHAT YOU CAN scheme, made possible by funds from Wells Harbour Commissioners and private donors, continues - if you are local and want to experience our work but funds are tight, you can claim up to four tickets per event and just pay what you can (minimum £1 per ticket). Simple as that. And for 2020, we are able to extend this offer to local groups for room hires.

Finally, we are opening our doors on Saturday 1 February for a special Open Day, for you to drop by, take a look around and behind the scenes, and ask us anything about our work, building and plans, and give us feedback on our first eighteen months. I hope to see you there.

Enjoy the Spring.

Launched last autumn, PAY WHAT YOU CAN aims to give access to our programme of events and to our spaces for hire to local people for whom available finances might be an issue.

Funds have generously been provided by Wells Harbour Commissioners and other generous donors to support local people in enjoying what we have to offer.

If you live locally and feel you would benefit from this new scheme, you simply let the box office know when you book tickets, and just pay what you can afford (minimum £1 per ticket). It’s that simple. Certain conditions apply (see below), and we will run the scheme as long as funds allow.

From this year, additional funds have allowed us to extend the scheme to room hires. Information on spaces and rates are available online www.wellsmaltings.org.uk, but contact administrator Laura Crane on 01328 711378 or [email protected] to discuss how the scheme might contribute to your booking costs.

•Funded by Wells Harbour Commissioners and private donors, the scheme aims to give access to arts, heritage and entertainment activity and spaces to hire at Wells Maltings to local people and groups for whom affordability may be an issue•Tickets are available for every event, but are limited to four per booker. •The scheme can, from 2020, be applied to hire of rooms and spaces, subject to availability.•There is no means testing nor eligibility criteria.
