Founded in 1870 .

Is in Kensington and

Chelsea, in London.

It´s a non-

commercial theater,

whose main

objective is the

promotion of

contemporary

theater.

Page 25: ARTS AT U.K.

It was built in 1599 by Shakespeare´s ' playing

company to show his plays and was destroyed by

fire on 1613. It had capacity for more than 3,000

spectators.

A modern reconstruction named “Shakespeare´s

Globe”, opened in 1997 from the site of the

original theatre, but it´s smaller, just could get

about 1000 spectators.

HISTORY

The United Kingdom has had a major influence on

modern cinema.

The first moving pictures developed on celluloid film

were made in Hyde Park, London in 1889 by

William Friese Greene, a British inventor, who

patented the process in 1890.Hyde Park William Friese Greene

Page 29: ARTS AT U.K.

Modern cinema is generally regarded as descending from the

work of the French Lumière brothers in 1895, and their show

first came to London in 1896.

The first people to build and run a working 35 mm camera in

Britain were Robert W. Paul and Birt Acres. They made the

first British film Incident at Clovelly Cottage in February

1895.

If we see carefully, we can notice that many of the movies we

watch has a British influence, or they were filmed in the UK.

We can learn about the british people, their costumes,

traditions, etc. by seeing a film made in the UK.
