Some useful tips to face board exams

CAMPUSTUESDAY 7 MARCH 2017 03

Dr Mohammad Harun Khan Principal, MES Indian School & Student Counsellor (CBSE).

The Board exams for Classes X and XII CBSE (i) have started. CBSE national curriculum

examination starts on March 9. The date sheet for the exam is really encouraging as the gap between papers gives hope even to those who couldn’t study extensively, provided the gap is utilised judi-ciously and a proper balance is maintained between study and relaxation / sleep.

Taking adequate rest with proper sleep during this phase is even more important. That will improve the quality of concentra-tion/study.

Many students over-stress dur-ing exam without proper sleep which doesn’t add any value to the overall performance of such stu-dents as many a time it results in falling sick due to sleeplessness. Hence, the study should go on a rhythmic pace even during exam-ination season.

Balancing food is equally important. According to a Sanskrit saying, being alpahaari (the one who eats less / adequate) is one of the important characteristics of a student.

Parents should supplement stu-dents’ diet with fruits / juice and students should not ignore drink-ing enough water. Thirty minutes of brisk walk and 10 minutes of breathing exercise in the morning will also add value to the quality of study and performance in the examination. Time wasters and attention distracters like social

media, TV etc should be avoided till the exams are over. Parents and other family members are expected to support the examinee by way of not using such things at home. As a matter of fact, it should be treated

as the examination of entire fam-ily and not only of the student. That will motivate the student to perform even better at the exam due to the moral support and care, he/she is getting from everyone in the family.

While writing the exams, stu-dents should not struggle with a question which is difficult to answer. You can skip such questions and come back to difficult questions after answering easy questions. You should also have a sense of pro-portion and time management in mind while writing the answers, e.g. a two mark question should not be answered in two pages, even though you have the capacity to do

it. A very important thing to remember is to remain in touch with your subject teachers and fol-low their advice, because they are your well wishers and know the subject. Last, but not the least in importance, pray to Almighty, take blessings of your parents, teachers and be confident about your abili-ties. You are also welcome to call me on 44572801/813 for exam related counselling during follow-ing timings: Morning 9:30am to 1:30pm & Evening 5:30pm to 6:30pm or have a personal meet-ing in MES Indian School between 5:30pm to 6:30pm. Wishing you all an excellent performance in your examination.

The Peninsula

The exuberance and the striking parallelism between the oeuvres of Pablo Picasso and Alberto Giacometti,

brought about by a strong bond during the long prolific careers of the two foremost figures of mod-ern art, undeniably lends unique appeal to the “Picasso-Giacometti” exhibition; which had given the country’s art community a reason to celebrate when it recently opened at The Fire Station.

This major exhibition showcas-ing over a hundred works of the

artists heralds, a pivotal moment in the country’s art landscape, thanks to the efforts of Qatar Museums to bring the show to Qatar in partner-ship with the Musee National Picasso and the Fondation Giacometti.

A product of two years of research, the well-curated show, running for three months, is a rare o p p o r t u n i t y f o r e v e r y

art enthusiast to embark into an intimate encounter with the two masters through their immense bodies of works, which had been inspired by each other in one way or another through countless conversations.

Chronologically and themati-cally arranged, the show provides the audience an unequivocal sense of their professional and personal

links and a journey into the devel-opment of their trailblasing artistic concepts and distinctive styles.

Inasmuch as the two shared friendship which lasted for a long time, there was a genuine artistic dialogue that existed between them unknown to many, according to Fondation Giacometti Director and the exhibition’s curator, Catherine Grenier.

COVER STORYTUESDAY 7 MARCH 2017 05

This great friendship despite a 20-year age gap can be clearly gleaned from the spectacular array of pieces which do not only reveal startling similarities but also differ-ences, noted Grenier.

Upon entering the Garage gal-lery, the visitor immediately notices the renowned self-portraits of the artists when they were of the same age. Picasso’s Self-portrait dated 1901 when he was 20 years old and the year Giacometti was born is hung adjacent to Giacometti’s Self-portrait in 1923.

Giacometti, who formally stud-ied sculpture, departed from traditional style while taking inspi-ration from cubist sculptures of Picasso who in spite of not having formal training in the discipline had impressed the young Giacometti apparent in his earlier works on dis-play which exhibit the painter-sculptor ’s s trong influence.

When Picasso shifted to two-dimensional ‘flat’ paintings, Giacometti applied this concept in fashioning his ‘flat sculptures’ which visitors can enjoy in a dedi-cated section at the gallery.

The portion on Surrealist Period teems with an array of paintings and sculptures which depict strange, deformed and illogical figures char-acteristic of the artistic style during the rise of this avant-garde move-ment in Paris. While Picasso’s oil painting Reclining Woman (1939) and Giacometti’s bronze sculpture Reclining Woman Who Dreams (1929) afford the viewer a grasp of the cultural movement as reflected in artistic production during this era, they also project how it influenced the individual artists in their stylis-

tic and thematic choice.Perhaps the most haunting seg-

ment of the exhibition is ‘The Living and the Dead’ which contains pieces that focus on the imperma-nence of life and the inevitability of death, and reveal the duo’s fasci-nation and fear of dying. The resemblance between Giacomet-ti’s portrait Annette (1952) and the sculpture Death’s Head in their hor-rifying dark eyes is, for every viewer, hard to ignore.

A section devoted to a collec-tion of works with the women they loved posing as models is another interesting feature of the exhibition

as it shows the artists’ dedication to their muse and the depth of their relationships as they attempt to capture their models’ very essence through what they do best visually.

In the final portion of the exhi-bition on post-war realism, the artists’ works on daily life subjects showcased are varied from paint-ings to sculptures to sketches, and one amusing piece here is Giacometti’s 1951 bronze sculpture The Dog modeled after Picasso’s Afghan hound. Three iconic Giacometti sculptures Walking Man II (1960), Tall Woman I (1960) and

Large Head (1958) are a fitting eye-catching finale to the exhibition.

Of all the galleries in the coun-try, The Fire Station’s Garage serves as the perfect venue for the show. First, the exhibition revolves around the concept of art as a conversation which The Fire Station upholds with the Artists in Residence programme it launched two years back. This old Civil Defence structure renovated into a new art space has been a nur-turing home to homegrown artists, who- like Picasso and Giacometti- are interacting as they create artworks in studios alongside each other.

Established not long ago, The Fire Station is already taking huge strides recently launching the Paris Art Residency Program which grants Qatari artists three-month residency at Qatar’s studio in the Cite Intenationale des Arts-Paris- the largest and most important art residency in the world. It was in Paris where Picasso and Giacometti both met and flourished in their illustrious careers. The first Qatari artist nominee for this recurring programme in its first cycle - Ibtisam Al Saffar- has cited Picasso as one of her influences when it comes to her portraits as she treads the path of abstract expressionism school.

The ‘Picasso-Giacometti’ exhi-bition proves what artistic dialogue can achieve in the production of artists’ bodies of works which could leave an enduring legacy to inspire generations all over the world.

Students in the US two to three times more often describe male professors as “brilliant”

and “genius” than female profes-sors, new research has found.

“Male professors were described more often as ‘brilliant’ and ‘genius’ than female profes-sors in every single field we studied

-- about two to three times more often,” said lead researcher Dan-iel Storage from the University of Illinois, US.

For the study, the researchers conducted an analysis of more than 14 million reviews on Rate-MyProfessors.com, where students write anonymous reviews of their professors. Students most often use the words “brilliant” and “genius” to describe male professors and in academic disciplines in which women and African-Americans are underrepresented - such as phi-losophy and physics -- the findings

showed. The findings, reported in the journal PLOS ONE, included academic disciplines in the sci-ences, humanities, social sciences and math. The new analysis offers new insights into students’ atti-tudes and thoughts, the researchers said.

“What is valuable about spon-taneous comments is that they provide an unvarnished reflection of how people evaluate others in their field, and what they look for in other people in that field,” Andrei Cimpian, professor at Uni-versity of Illinois, noted.

The study also found that none of the following four factors could fully explain the underrepresen-tat ion of women or African-Americans in a field -- average GRE (graduate school entry exam) math scores, the desire to avoid long hours at work, the selectivity of each field or the

ability to think systematically. While there are correlations

between some of these factors and the presence or absence of women and African-Americans in some fields, “we consistently found that the only thing that was explaining the proportions of women and African-Americans in a particular field was that field’s emphasis on the importance of brilliance and genius,” Storage said.

“Both of these groups are

stereotyped in a similar way about their intellectual abilities and therefore are potentially affected in a similar way by the amount of emphasis that’s put on brilliance,” Cimpian said. “The people in cer-tain fields might not see that quality in women and African-Americans. Women and African-Americans themselves may be conditioned to not see these qualities in themselves,” Cimpian noted.

Defending champion Junalvin escaped a nail-biting victory over the never-say-die

Ooredoo squad, 89-85, in the over-time period to take home the championship crown anew in the Seniors Open Division of Ooredoo Cup 2017 hosted by Pinoy Basket-ball of Qatar (PIBAQ) at Al Gharafa Multi Purpose Training Gym .

Junalvin’s feat brought them to a grand slam for winning the crown

for the third straight years. Their bitter rivalry with Oooredoo started last year in their hardly fought championship match.

A foul committed by Willie Layag of Ooredoo with 10 seconds left in the game proved to be costly giving Junalvin’s Michael Olino a visit to the free throw line convert-ing a perfect 2 o 2 baskets thus sealing off the hard earned four-point victory. Layag took a last ditch

attempt from beyond the arc but missed with two seconds left before the final buzzer sounded. He was instrumental in the three-point bas-ket by Jay Abejero with his assist to inch closer their shortfall by just two points before he committed the heartbreaking foul.

Anastaciio Mendoza converts a jumper with 17 seconds left to assure a five-point lead only to be quickly answered by Abejero’s trey.

Both teams traded baskets in the shootout all throughout the game sending wild cheers from the fans in separate camps. The Olino-Men-doza tandem with a combined 51 points seems to be superior against the league veterans team up of Layag and big man center Jojo Lon-galong only racking up a combined 42 points. Sweet shooting Olino top-scored with 32 points while Longalong had 25 points.

I promised myself that I wouldn’t mention Marcel Proust, but there was no way around it. So I’ll tell

you what you may already know: That lots of us have heard anything about the pretty, shell-shaped tea cakes called madeleines is probably because of a short paragraph in one of the 20th century novelist’s long books, “Remembrance of Things Past.” In it, the taste of a madeleine brought back childhood memories. It also gave us the expression “Prous-tian,” which we get to use whenever the same thing happens to us.

But the story I love about the madeleine is how it came to be, which takes place in Commercy, France, in the 18th century. There, the Duke of Lorraine, a.k.a. the exiled king of Poland, Stanislas Leszczynski, first tasted these little cakes prepared by his maid named Madeleine. Their shape was an homage to religious pil-grims, whose symbol was a scallop shell, and their taste was so seductive they eventually become the darlings of Versailles’ royals.

Cappuccino Madeleines12 servings madeleines or 24

mini-muffinsCoffee and cinnamon provide

grace notes in these famous shell-shaped tea cakes.

When you have a chance to refrigerate the batter in the special madeleine pan in advance and place it on a preheated baking sheet in the oven, you’ll stand a better chance of creating cakes with the classic

“bump,” or rise, on the top.MAKE AHEAD: The batter

needs to be refrigerated for at least 1 hour and up to 2 days in advance. The madeleines are best served fresh and warm.

Madeleine pans are sold at kitchen stores and via online

gourmet purveyors. From cookbook author Dorie Greenspan.

Ingredients2/3 cup flour2 to 3 teaspoons finely ground

espresso (may substitute 11/2 tea-spoons instant coffee)

1 teaspoon baking powder1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon ground

cinnamon1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt1/2 cup sugar2 large eggs, at room

temperature

1 teaspoon vanilla extract8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted

butter, melted and still warm

StepsWhisk together the flour, coffee,

baking powder, cinnamon and salt in a mixing bowl. Whisk together the sugar and eggs energetically; you’re looking for the mixture to thicken and pale just a little, and this could take a couple of minutes. Once the whisk leaves tracks, beat in the vanilla extract.

Still working with your whisk or

switching to a spatula, gently mix in the flour mixture, folding and stir-ring only until it disappears into the batter. Finally, fold in the melted but-ter. Press a piece of plastic wrap against the surface of the batter and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. If you can, chill the batter for a few hours so that it has time to take in the fla-vours of the coffee and cinnamon.

Alternatively, you can spray (use baker’s spray) or butter and flour a madeleine pan or 24 mini-muffin wells, spoon the batter into the molds, cover it lightly with a sheet of parch-ment or wax paper, and refrigerate the batter this way. (I like this tech-nique - it means that the madeleines are ready to go.)

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Place a large, heavy baking sheet in the oven and preheat it, too. Grease and fill the mad or muffin tin with batter, if you haven’t already done so. Place the pan on the hot baking sheet and bake (middle rack) for 12 to 15 minutes if you’re making shell-shaped mads, and 10 to 13 minutes for minis, or until the cakes are golden brown and their centers spring back when lightly poked. Immediately release the little pas-tries from the molds by rapping the edge of the pan against the counter. Gently pry any recalcitrant madeleines from the pan using your fingers or a butter knife; transfer them to a serving platter - these are so good straight from the oven - or a wire cooling rack.

VARIATION: To make tradi-tional madeleines, omit the coffee and cinnamon and increase the vanilla increase to 11/2 teaspoons. Rub the zest of 1 lemon into the sugar before your beat in the eggs.

A team of researchers from India and the US has identified several gene variants which may predispose indi-

viduals to develop gallbladder cancer. Although gallbladder can-cer is rare in most parts of the world, it is far more common among some ethnic groups, such as Native Amer-icans in North America, and in certain geographic regions, includ-ing Central and South America and East and Southeast Asia.

The 178,000 new cases diag-nosed worldwide each year are centered primarily in these high-risk regions. “Using the latest technolo-gies to look at the causes - notably the genetic underpinnings - of this understudied disease just makes a lot of sense,” said study co-leader

Nilanjan Chatterjee, Professor at Johns Hopkins University Bloomb-erg School of Public Health in the US.

The researchers estimated that as much as 25 per cent of gallblad-der cancer risk could be explained by common genetic variants.

“Gallbladder cancer, like many other cancers and complex diseases, is likely to be associated with many genetic markers, each of which may have small effects, but in combina-tion they can explain substantial variation in risk,” Chatterjee said.

The findings, published in the journal The Lancet Oncology, could lead to a better understanding of the causes of this highly fatal con-dition, which could in turn lead to better treatments for the disease.

The gallbladder is a tiny organ in the abdomen which stores bile, the digestive fluid produced by the liver. When gallbladder cancer is

discovered early, the chances for survival are good, but most gall-bladder cancers are discovered late

as it is difficult to diagnose since it often causes no specific symptoms.

Health guidelines on salt intake recommend con-sumption levels that are

too low and this may increase the risk of a fatal heart attack, researchers, led by one of Indian-origin, have warned.

According to current guide-lines issued by the World Health Organisation, adults should con-sume less than five grams of salt a day. However, researchers in Can-ada emphasised in the study that it was not enough and there is a need to increase the maximum salt intake guide, overturning conven-tional wisdom that says eating too much salt is a serious health risk.

“It is futile to target such low intakes and moreover, it may well be harmful. Studies show below three grammes of sodium per day increase mortality, heart attack and heart failure,” Salim Yusuf, Professor at McMaster University in Canada, was quoted as saying to express.co.uk. Reducing salt

intake to overly low levels under-mines the body’s natural balance, Yusuf said. The findings are detailed in a report published in the European Heart Journal by the joint working group of the World Heart Federation, the European Society of Hypertension and the European Public Health Associa-tion which also emphasised the potential dangers of lowering intake too much.

Eating dietary soy products may be safe as well as

beneficial for some women diagnosed with breast cancer, new research has found.

Soy foods are con-sidered among the healthiest for human consumption, but their estrogen-like proper-ties -- found in isoflavones -- previously raised concerns of a potential increase in the risk of breast cancer.

But, the new findings showed soy foods not only prevent breast cancer but also benefit women who have breast cancer.

Women with breast cancer who consumed high amounts of isofla-vones had a 21 per cent lower risk of dying than women who consumed low amounts. “Our findings suggest that survival may be better in patients with a higher consumption of isoflavones,” said Esther John from the Cancer Prevention Institute of California -- a US-based non-profit organisation. Further, the effect was largely confined to women with hormone receptor-negative tumours and women who were not treated with anti-estrogen therapy such as tamoxifen -- which blocks the effects of estrogen, the researchers said, in the paper published in the journal CANCER.

Director Lokesh Kanagaraj says his forthcoming Tamil urban thriller “Maanaga-

ram”, set against the backdrop of Chennai, will showcase the city in a different light.

Starring Sundeep Kishan, Sri and Regina Cassandra, the film will release on Friday.

Talking about the film, Lokesh said: “It’s a story about metropoli-tan dreams in the lives of a few characters. A lot of people from dif-ferent walks of life come to a metropolitan with dreams, but when reality strikes them they real-ize life isn’t easy.” He said the film will showcase Chennai in a differ-ent light. “It was a challenge to showcase Chennai differently. So many films over the years have cap-tured the city in different lights. We had to still show something

different. “We scouted about 300 locations and out of which zeroed in a few locations that haven’t been explored so far,” he said, adding the film was shot across several real locations in the city.

Lokesh is confident the film’s hyperlink narrative style will stand out. “More than the story, it’s the sequence of events that audience will find very engaging. We have used the hyperlink narrative style which connects one story to another and finally weaves together all the sub-plots to make a very engaging screenplay,” he added.

Talking about his cast, he said the script was written with Sri in mind. “He was my first choice. I met Sundeep through a friend and he really liked the script. In fact, he was even ready to produce the film but it couldn’t happen immediately

as he busy with other commitments. Meanwhile, I met producer S.R.

Prabhu who liked my script and came on board,” he said.

The “X-Men” spinoff

“Logan” -- starring Hugh Jackman as the metal-c l a w e d , m u t a n t anti-hero Wolverine --

dominated North American box offices this weekend with a whop-ping take of $85.3m in its debut, according to industry estimates released yesterday.

Aimed at a more adult audience, it is the first R-rated outing in the

“X-Men” franchise, which began in 2000 and has so far clocked up $4.4bn in box office revenue.

It is more of a blood-spattered dystopian road movie than a tradi-tional superhero film, and follows Wolverine/Logan as he undertakes

one final mission: to protect a young girl who has powers remarkably like his own and is being pursued by dark forces.

Dropping from first to second was Jordan Peele’s socially con-scious horror film “Get Out,” with $26.1m, said box office tracker Exhibitor Relations. Peele’s feature directorial debut -- the actor is half of the comedy duo “Key and Peele”

-- follows a young African Ameri-can (Daniel Kaluuya) who is so nervous about meeting the family of his white girlfriend (Allison Wil-liams), he fails to realize the menace lurking at their mansion. The movie cost under $5m to produce and has taken in $76m in two weeks. Deb-uting in third place with $16.1m in receipts was “The Shack.”

Singer Katy Perry made her first public appearance following her split from actor Orlando Bloom. She was attending the 2017 iHeartRadio Music Awards.

Perry flaunted a strapless jumpsuit at the red carpet of the awards gala here on Sunday and couldn’t stop smil-ing while posing for photographers, reports aceshowbiz.com. Perry had time to chat with radio host Elvis Duran on the red carpet. After he talked about her new look, Perry said: “Well yeah, if you’re going this extreme it should, hello! I’m trying to get more attention, obvi-ously. You can just grow it back.

means you make the differ-ence,” added Timberlake, who ended his speech with an expletive that was bleeped.

Timberlake picked up the first award of the night for song of the year, presented by actor Jeremy Renner.

“Can’t Stop This Feeling” became a No.1 hit last year and was nominated for best original song at last month’s Academy Awards. It’s from the animated film “Trolls.”

Actor Hugh Grant’s Prime Minister David has returned as a married man in the sequel to the 2003 hit film “Love Actually”. At the

end of the 2003 Christmas classic, Natalie, played by Martine McCutcheon, meets David at the air-port and they kiss. Now, in photos tweeted by director Richard Curtis’s partner Emma Freud, Grant has returned to play the PM once more, reports dailystar.co.uk. Freud shared a photo of Grant speaking to a room full of journalists. She tweeted: “And here he is. Our Prime Minister. Again. And still hot.” Freud then shared another major plot secret by tweeting a photo of McCutcheon gazing proudly at the PM and writing: “Our PM is still married. And she’s still lovely.”

After offering a slew of “Reaction” buttons for posts last year, Facebook may soon add a new reaction “Dislike” for Face-

book Messenger, a media report said.According to a report in Tech Crunch, Face-

book was testing out a “thumbs down” reaction in addition to the already available reactions.

“We’re always testing ways to make Messenger more fun and engaging. This is a small test where we enable people to share an emoji that best represents their feelings on a message,” the com-pany was quoted as saying.

The difference would be the availability of a “Dislike” button in the Messenger. The same but-ton would not appear in the list of reactions available for posts. The new feature in

Messenger would allow users to add reaction emojis next to the text in conversations. Users could do this by clicking on a button next to text. The reactions are similar to the current six reac-tion buttons for posts, but also includes a thumbs down button. The feature also includes a reac-tion counter, which would list the number of reactions on any given line. In February, Face-book celebrated the first anniversary of

“Reactions” and recorded 300 billion “Reactions” on posts and the “Love” reaction was used max-imum times by its over 1.79 billion users.

“It’s been one year since we could do more than ‘Like’ a friend’s post, and in that time, there have been a total of 300 billion reactions on posts to date,” Facebook said in a statement.

South Korean electronics major LG will update two of its smartphone models -- the G4

and V10 -- with the latest operat-ing system (OS).

LG plans to offer the upgrade of the OS with Android 7.0 for the V10 in the second half of this year and for the G4 in the third quarter, Yonhap news agency reported on Saturday.

The schedule applies to phones sold in South Korea, with consum-ers abroad to be notified of a

separate schedule later. The G4, which debuted in April 2015, had its OS updated twice. The V10 was released in October the year and also has had two OS updates. But LG had announced plans to discon-tinue updates, saying the phones are not optimised with the latest version. Kicking off an era of pre-mium smartphones with the unique 18:9 screen aspect ratio, LG intro-duced the G6 at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) this year in Barcelona.
