Project Information

Project summary:The National Park Service, on behalf of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, is seeking preliminary and finalapproval to install artistic lighting in two Pennsylvania Avenue triangle parks – Murrow Park and Monroe Park. MurrowPark is bounded by H Street, 18th Street, and Pennsylvania Avenue and the artistic lighting will be incorporated into theexisting light poles. Monroe Park is bounded by Eye Street, 20th Street, and Pennsylvania Avenue and the artistic lightingwill be incorporated into an existing fountain. A stainless steel mesh will be installed in the center of the fountain in orderto create a waterfall that will follow the pattern of the mesh and create optical effects. The lighting equipment will beplaced inside the prism formed by 3 stainless steel curtains.

The radio and TV shows of Edward Murrow, the journalist, will be used as inspiration and provide the inputs to generatelighting patterns in the lanterns of Murrow Park and the water fountain in Monroe Park. The lighting in the two parks willbe synchronized to create the impression that they are linked together. In Monroe Park, the waterfall will create a set ofgeometrical patterns produced by the stainless steel mesh and lighting, as the water flows and observers pass by. InMurrow Park, the lanterns will transition from cool colors such as violet, blue, and cyan during the summer solstice towarm colors such as red, organe, and yellow during the winter solstice.
