    Abstract

    Thisarticleengagesincriticaldialoguewithwhatappearsto beanemergingfinde

    sicleconcernwiththeunexaminedtheoreticalusageoftheconceptofexperiencein

    anthropology. Thearticle beginswitha briefreviewoftheworkofanumberof

    scholarswhoshareagrowingdissatisfactionwiththeproblemofexperiencein

    contemporaryanthropologicalandsocialscientificwritings. Inordertoevaluateand

    situatetheserecentcriticalperspectives, thearticlethenshiftstoexploreingreater

    detailthewritingsoftwoanthropologistswhohavesignificantlycontributedto

    contemporaryanthropologicaltheorizingofexperience:VictorTurnerandClifford

    Geertz. Finally, inanattempttolaythegroundworkforareturntoexperiencein

    anthropologicaltheorizingandresearch, thearticleconcludes byoutlininga

    complementalmodelofexperience. Drawingfrominsightsintothetemporal

    organizationofexperiencefoundinthephenomenologicalwritingsofWilliamJames,

    EdmundHusserl, andAlfredSchutzthismodelattemptsto bridgewhatsomescholars

    believeto beacontroversialgap betweengranularandcoherencetheoriesof

    experiencethatpermeatemanyoftheanthropological(andphilosophical)discussions

    ofthetopic.
