No Smoking

Until the total smoking ban in public places

was introduced during the summer, many

pubs and restaurants that tried to cater for

both smokers and non smokers had a problem.

While the people could be separated, smoke did not recognise or keep to the

same boundaries!

The latest ruse by the Greater London Authority is very similar. It wants

construction equipment working on certain high profile sites in the capital

(such as the Olympic sites) to be fitted with diesel particulate filters.

For cranes and telehandlers the particulate filter issue is particularly crazy in that

they are exempt from requiring these filters on the roads and other 'low profile'

sites within the London Emission Zone, but not on these particular sites.

This raises several serious issues, but unfortunately the whole reasoning

for requiring the filters at certain sites in the first place is half-cocked

(see smoking/non smoking above!). And if allowed to be implemented, it will

be without regard to the massive impracticalities and associated costs.

One of the issues raised by the CPA is that retrofitting filters voids engine

manufacturers warranties. Filter manufacturers must therefore obtain

certification approving the installation/modification for each model type, and

this involves extensive testing and costs, particularly bearing in mind the

uncertainty of the market size and longevity.

But perhaps this mad cap idea will backfire on the GLA. The CPA is sensibly

telling its members that they may be better off boycotting these 'high profile'

sites. After all most, if not all, hire companies are probably as busy as they have

ever been and will have more than enough work on 'normal' sites using

unmodified equipment.

Ultimately, these special sites will have to pay a lot more for their equipment and

depending how many decide to fit the filters, could see delays in equipment supply.

For those that do modify equipment there is obviously an opportunity to charge

inflated rates for equipment that maybe highly utilised due to its rarity value.

But surely the main issue here is why we allow such crazy ideas in the first

place. We have more chance of diesel particulates keeping within the 'special'

site boundaries than a politician admitting they made a mistake! Like most

issues, let's hope common sense prevails. If not, it won't be the rental

companies that loose out.

Demag doubleThe 3,200 tonne capacity Terex Demag CC8800-1 Twin - the world's largestmobile crawler crane - was handed over to its new owner Al Jaber HeavyLift & Transport at a ceremony earlier this month. A few days later, Demagused a customer open day at its Zweibrücken facility to unveil its new 300tonne AC300/6 All Terrain crane.

Based on the CC8800-1, the Twin utilises a double boom and back mastconfiguration boosting capacity to 3,200 tonnes. Terex claims that as a pickand carry crawler crane the new unit offers considerable time and spacebenefits compared to ring lift cranes and jacking towers. (see full story on page 22)

Terex is pitching its new 300 tonne AC300/6 as a 'jack-of-all-trades' cranewhich can be used for a wide range of lifting duties. With partial counterweight it can go out efficiently as a 140 tonne to 220 tonne classcrane while its strong load chart allows it to tackle some 400 tonne work at the top end.

Snorkel's $18.5 million order backlog at the end of June was at its highestlevel for more than five years. That figure has risen since its acquisition inJune to $26.7 million - fuelled by orders from UpRight distributors in Europeas the company reports over £20 million of 'cross selling'.

Tanfield says that with its third production line now installed at its UK facility, production is touching 200 units a week. In the USA, a further 4,500 squaremetres (50,000 sq ft) of assembly floor space at Snorkel's Kansas facilitywill be opened, while the group has plans to add another 18,000 square metres(200,000 sq ft) of manufacturing space over the next 12 months.

And more acquisitions? The company held a major international dealer meeting and rental customeropen day at its new Vigo plant in the north east England in September tolaunch its new branding strategies and forward plans. Checking the clockTracked Access has recently supplied both aerial work platforms and minicranes for the massive reconstruction project at St Pancras station inLondon. One job involved taking a surveyor up to inspect the building’sstructure prior to fitting a new clock. A light-weight glass fibre clock (pictured) had been hung after the original was removed and sold. Unable to buy the original back the station is having an identical replica made.Given the significant weight difference between the temporary clock andthe replica, a full structural survey was required. The problem was that theplatforms under the clock are not solid, they incorporate space originallyused to store beer. So the company supplied a 23 metre Palazzani TSJ23Ctracked spider lift for the job.

Question: Perhaps one our readers can tell us why the fibreglass clock was fitted during construction work?

A Palazzani TSJ23C was used to reach the area around the St Pancras clock.

Steady and increasing growth inglobal demand over several yearsmeans that all crane manufacturersand rental companies are busierthan ever. Hidden in the generalclamour for lifting equipment hasbeen the relatively rapid rise ofthe compact telescopic crawlercrane (the next step up from spider cranes).

Mini meAfter several false dawns, the smalltelescopic crane finally looks like it has escaped from its 'specialist'and 'niche' status and is now beginning to break into main streamhire fleets.

Kranlyft, distributor of Maeda minicranes in the UK, sold several of its4.9 tonne capacity LC785 units atlast month's Vertikal Days reflectingincreasing interest in this type ofproduct. The Maeda seems to becapturing all the headlines, but it isnot the only mini crawler craneavailable. Other machines in the UKand Ireland include 4.7 tonne and8.0 tonne capacity Hitachi's fromNRC Plant, while Valla producesseveral models from a two tonnefixed boom model to three fullyslewing models up to 12 tonnes liftcapacity. Peter Hird has several ofthem available for hire.

AGD Equipment was the first companyto enter this market with IHI and stillhas the largest rental fleet with bothKato and IHI zero tailswing machines. It has also added two larger telescopic crawlers taking its total to 20 units. Sparrow Mini Cranespurchased the production rights tothe Starlifter range of compact cranesfrom Sandhurst Manufacturing several years ago but since then onlya few units have been built - mainlyto order - a classic case of manufacturing and rental not mixing. The company also offers modelsfrom IHI, Komatsu and Maeda.

One of the early pioneers in this sec-tor was Stratford-upon-Avon-basedAGD Equipment which claims tohave launched the concept in the UKat the 1991 SED exhibition with theIHI mini cranes.

Although a high cost unit, AGD soldtwo, three tonne machines to utilitiescontractor J Murphy and over a period of time a further six, five tonners. However, the market neverdeveloped as anticipated and itsstock of three tonne, zero tail-swingunits just didn't find customers. The market just wasn't ready for thistype of machine.

And it wasn't just the UK that didn'tappreciate the features of the minicrane because IHI cut the range afterthe crash in the Japanese market inthe late 1990's.

But now, almost 20 years on, themini telescopic crawler crane isbeginning to take off with a product

Little&Large

The increasing diversity and range of products on themarket is clearly shown this month as we take a look at both telescopic and lattice boom crawler cranes. From compact telescopics to the highest capacity lattice boom crane ever, Mark Darwin takes a look at the latest developments and machines on the market.

An IHI CCH500T working as a service crane lifting casings for a Stent piling rigworking alongside the railway in Rugby. The unit was specified in order to mitigate the risk of the boom falling over the live line and has a slew restrictor fitted in order to stop the operator from inadvertently slewing over the railway.

Big spidersA machine such as Unic's newURW 706 - currently the largestspider crane on the market ofwhich the first production unitwas bought by City Lifting - hastremendous performance for itssize. A six tonne lifting capacityat three metres, 22.7 metresmaximum lift height, with extension jib, a total weight ofaround eight tonnes and dimensions of just 1.6 metreswide, 2.2 metres high and 5.6metres long. But to achieve thisimpressive lifting performance ithas to set its outriggers giving a6.5 metre by 6.6 metre footprint.

With a conservative quoted liftingcapacity of eight tonnes, theHitachi 160 LCT weighs nearlytwice as much but has a footprintof only 2.49 metres wide by 3.9metres long with an overall heightof 2.9 metres and in the rightconditions can lift and carry up to six tonnes.

offering that has changed little overthat period - low overall operatingweight, compact width and heightdimensions, lifting capacities toabout eight tonnes and a lift andcarry facility that gives them a significant advantage over thegrowing mini spider crane sector.

Liebherr is the onlymajor crane producer with a large telescopic crawler.

The 8 tonne capacity Hitachiis proving very popular

The Maeda LC785 is selling well reflecting increasing interest in the mini telescopic crawler.

“When we first started with smalltelescopic crawlers we used to callthem the homing pigeons becausethey kept on going out to site fortrial and returned home the sameday,” said NRC managing directorRod Abbot. How thing havechanged. NRC currently has a waiting list for these machines andhas 10 arriving just before the endof the year. A new engined versionof the machine is also due and anew 5 tonne telescopic crawler willbe launched at SED next year.

End-users in the know realised awhile ago how good these unitsperformed around site. Howeverthe rest of the industry is nowstarting to appreciate the advantagesand want the compact cranes. What is unusual is that with such a demand, there are so few manufacturers.

The introduction of two new Maedamachines including the largercapacity LC1385M-2, which maywell have a seven or eight tonnerating at two metres - will help thesupply problem a little but there islittle else at the moment.

One company that offers nothingelse is US-based Mantis craneswhich produces the Spandeck line up. While the company haslooked at the European market anumber of times, demand in NorthAmerica is currently keeping thecompany's production facilitieshumming. Mantis takes a differentapproach with its cranes developing booms that can copewith side and shock loadings thatwould quickly ruin a regular telescopic lift crane boom. Thecompany argues that with itsheavy duty undercarriages itscranes are often used off-level,while pick and carry on unevenground creates all sorts of dynamicloads that are transferred to the cranes boom and other components.

Heavy duty workMantis takes the line that ratherthan hide behind a statement thatthe crane must be used on perfectly prepared ground it buildsits crawler cranes to handle thetreatment that its customers' applications inevitably deliver. Inaddition, although its cranes all havetelescopic booms, its customerslook to use them for duty cyclework, including clamshell andauger work, so once again all components must be sized andspecified to handle the stressesand strains from this type of work. The Mantis telescopic crawlerrange currently runs from 27 to 63tonnes although a 100 tonner hasbeen on the drawing board forsome time and is due for launch atICUEE this month. A special 100tonner was produced recently forre-railing applications with 600mmground clearance, four motor drive, four miles per hour maximum travelspeed and incredible gradeability. The new model will incorporate

within minutes of offloading. Beingself-contained it also saves ontransport costs, particularly attractive for short term contracts. This quick set up time also meansthat the crane is available for liftingfor the entire hire period, resultingin cost savings for the user. Hirerspromoting this rapid 'availability towork' time see big returns on thehire rates - which can be up to 50percent higher for a similar liftcapacity lattice boom machine. A win win situation.

The concept is still very niche, reflected by the relatively few manufacturers offering such a product but interest is growing.Years ago, a 60 tonne capacity telescopic was needed to have theperformance of a 40 tonne latticecrane. However over time, the performance difference has closedso that a 50 tonne telescopic is theequivalent to a 40 tonne lattice andthey are getting closer and closer.

Price was also against the telescopic crawler, but it wouldnow appear that a 40 tonne telescopic may even be about £10k cheaper than a 40 tonne lattice. No wonder telescopics areon the increase.

As Hitachi Sumitomo UK dealer,NRC has been offering thesemachines for about 10 years andsays that the signs are good for abig increase in popularity. It has put in an order for 10, 40 tonneSCX400T telescopic crawler cranesand is hoping for a range which willinclude 5, 8, 20, 40, 65 and 85tonne machines.

NRC has 10 of these 40 tonne SCX400Tmachines on order.

c rawle r c ranes c&a

The Maeda LC1385M-2 has a 16 metreboom that can lift 2.6 tonnes to full height.

The Maeda is a similar size andweight to the Hitachi and has a 16metre, five section main boom thatcan lift 2.6 tonnes to full height. The load chart restricts pick andcarry to a maximum of two tonnes, but it can lift 440 kg to almost 16metres radius.

Quick set upThe larger telescopic crawlermachines are very different beastsaltogether but are also increasing inpopularity. Their attractions includeeasier transportation and the abilityto quickly stow their booms to passunder overhead obstacles whilebenefiting from always using theoptimum boom length configurationfor each lift.

The main advantage for these largerunits compared to their latticeboomed cousins is the set-upspeed. On restricted inner citysites, the telescopic crawler cranedoes not need a large rigging areato set up, so it can be ready to work

The 65 tonne capacity Marchetti Sherpa Logicrane has radial outriggers allowing self leveling.

many of the re-railers features.

Back in Europe Italian crane producer Marchetti - itself a nichemanufacturer - launched an unusualtracked telescopic machine at thisyear's Bauma. The SherpaLogicrane CW65.42L has a 65tonne capacity and a 42 metre maximum length boom. However it has a narrow width of 2980mmbefore extending its tracks and also has radial outriggers allowingthe unit to self-level givingincreased lifting capabilities. With jib, its maximum boom height is 56.5 metres.

In fact Italy is home to a number of telescopic crawler crane manufacturers, including TCM andTerex. Its Bendini subsidiarylaunched two new mid range models at last year's SAIE exhibitionin Bologna, giving the companythree models, the base modelTCC40 and its sister machine theTCC45 which offers a slightly highernominal capacity at 45 tonnes and alonger full power boom, and the 60tonne TCC60.

One of two machines launched by TerexBendini at last year's SAIE exhibitionwas the base model TCC40.

Page 19: Articulated Crawler boom lifts cranes€¦ · October 2007 cranes & access Comment 5 News 6 MBO at Ainscough, APS - IPS to form joint venture, AFI takes North East, world’s highest

The Italian crane market differs fromthe rest of Europe in that more contractors own their own cranesand look at on-site performanceover road going ability. As a resultthere are more Rough Terrain andtelescopic crawler cranes sold thanin the rest of Europe combined. Most industrial buildings are madeof concrete rather than steel andcladding, and many sites producewall sections on site and then tilt-up. The telescopic crawlercrane is ideal for this sort of work.

The only major crane producer witha large telescopic crawler isLiebherr with its LTR1100 whichwas launched almost two yearsago. The unit was its first telescopic boomed crawler crane togo into standard series production.Liebherr had built a telescopiccrawler crane before, producing aone-off special version of its 800tonne, LTM1800, using the crawlerbase from its LR1550 lattice cranefor a Japanese company in 1990.

The new model was also the resultof a request for a one-off unit combining the LTM1100 All Terraincrane superstructure with thecrawler undercarriage from the lattice boomed LR1100.

This time however Liebherr considered that the resulting product might have a much widerappeal, particularly given theincreasing popularity of telescopiccrawler cranes in Europe.

McNally/Windhoist took delivery ofthe first machine about a year ago. With a six section, 53 metre mainboom the LTR1100 can handle 10tonnes to 12 metres radius and lift1.8 tonnes at the maximum radiusof 48 metres. Fully rigged it weighs102 tonnes.

Liebherr say that the advantage ofsuch a crawler crane is itsmanoeuvrability, particularly onrough terrain and of course it canpick and carry its full capacity.

McNally bought the machine foruse predominantly for erecting thelarge mobile cranes it uses on windfarm assembly work as well as anassist crane for tailing in the longerwind turbine elements. It believesthat the LTR1100 will prove to be an ideal lifting tool on major windfarm work primarily as theLTR1100's crawler undercarriagefeatures hydraulic track widthadjustment, allowing the crane’sfive metre overall width (with900mm track pads) to be quicklyreduced to 3.5 metres, making itideal for even the narrowest ofwindfarm roads/tracks.

Overall, the LTR1100 looks like avery useful crane and has so farsold a handful in Europe. While thecapacities in the mid range of thechart are only half that of its latticecousin, it compares morefavourably at longer radii and ofcourse it is a lot easier to handle.

Supersize meRecent additions to the latticecrawler cranes have been variedand from all over the globe, fromGermany to the USA, Japan andmore recently China. The mostrecent big crane launches includethe massive 3,200 tonne capacityTerex Demag CC8800 Twin (seeseparate story), the Sany range ofChinese crawlers now available inthe UK from exclusive dealerWatson and Hillhouse andLiebherr's 600 tonne LR1600/s andat the other end of the spectrum its 40 tonne HS825 HD duty cyclecrane. Link Belt has also launcheda new crawler - the 75 tonne 138HSL - although it is targeted at theUS market. Another Chinese manufacturer Zoomlion is looking to bring product in through its new UK and Ireland dealerCrowland Cranes.

The larger capacity machines - 320 and 400 tonners- are currentlygoing through CE approval with anew 900 tonne machine to belaunched in Nanjing, China nextJanuary. There are also rumourscirculating that a 1200 tonnemachine may also be on the cards.

Like many Chinese cranes, pricesare competitive and delivery timesare relatively short but quality andreliability are yet to be proven. However all Sany machines haveCummins engines and hydraulicssystem from either Rexroth orKawasaki. The Sany marque looksset to become much more popular. It has already sold three excavators, three truck mountedconcrete pumps and a trailer mounted concrete pump in the UK.

Crowland Cranes is expecting a 70tonne Zoomlion lattice boomedcrawler crane which is currentlybeing tested and modified for theEuropean market. The companyalso says that a 200 tonne latticecrawler should arrive early nextyear. In the mean time, Crowland isbuilding a new parts warehouse.

“Our aim is to have a rolling orderwith the factory enabling deliverieseither from stock or at worst four months if not in stock,” saidCrowland's Peter Issitt. “The factory is also sending engineers tostay with us in the UK to monitorand report the modifications wecomplete and also to report anypossible quality improvements thatcan be made.”

Enteco is another crawler cranerange now available in the UKthrough new dealer P S Webb. However the Italian-made heavy-duty cycle cranes will initially be targeted more at thefoundations market as this is thedealer's area of expertise.

Liebherr unveiled its new HS 825HD Litronic 40 tonne hydraulic dutycycle crawler crane at Matexpo2007 in Belgium this September, claiming that it is the most powerful crane in the 40-tonnemarket segment.

Designed as a universal duty cyclecrawler crane, it aims to providemaximum productivity for demanding applications includingdragline bucket, clamshell,diaphragm-wall grab or casingoscillator, as well as straightforwardlifting tasks.

With a transport weight of 37tonnes the standard telescopingundercarriage offers a transportwidth of three metres with 700mmcrawler pads. The crane has a mainboom of 47 metres and is poweredby a six cylinder Tier III Liebherrengine. Standard equipmentincludes 16 tonne free-fall wincheswith maintenance free multi-discbrakes and fully proportional controls with simultaneous operation for rapid cycle work.

An additional equipment option is a GSM modem that enables thetransmission of operating andprocess data and online remotediagnosis on the machine.

Liebherr is also expanding the larger end or its lattice boomcrawler crane range with a new600 tonne model LR 1600/2. With a load moment of 8,085 tonnemetres it is based on the largerLR1750 design and is targeted atthe wind turbine installation market. The first production units should ship in the first half of 2008.

guide. The suspended ballast canbe adjusted from 10 to 18 metres radius under full load. This providesa relatively compact footprint forlarge loads at shorter radii.

For transport the cranes crawlercarbody, superstructure and 'A'frame, weighs 74 tonnes and isonly 3.2 metres high so that it canbe carried on a one metre highsemi low-loader. The weight can be reduced by 57 tonnes if the 'A'frame is removed. The crane is alsofitted with a new wider cab whichoffers a second seat and includesthree Liccon monitors.

Whatever the size or boom configuration, crawler crane manufacturers are continually trying to make it easier to set-up,transport and operate theirmachines. Telescopic booms havean enormous advantage in thisarea, but even the largest latticeboomed machines are closing thegap as engineers become evermore ingenious in designing thecranes from scratch for easy transport and erection.

It certainly looks as though after 20 years of trying, the mini telescopic crane has finally comeof age. Whether or not its largerbrothers will follow, only time will tell.

Liebherr claims its new 40 tonne HS 825HD is the most powerful in its class.

The company says it has finetuned every aspect of thecrane to ensure lower, costefficient transport and erection and can be practically set up withoutthe need for an assist crane to place 3MW turbines on top of 100 metre towers.

The new crane achieves its maximum lift capacity of 600 tonnes at 10 metresradius on a 48 metre mainboom rigged with the derrick system.

The maximum 180 metrereach is made up of a 96metre main boom with an84 metre luffing jib, with aderrick boom system inplace. Liebherr says that this set up is ideal for plantconstruction, enabling thecrane to work over the topof tall buildings.

The derrick boom can beextended up to 36 metresand equipped with maximum derrick ballast of 350 tonnes either suspended without a guideor with a ballast trailer and

Steve Filipov president of TerexCranes likened the Twin to a 'finered wine - the longer you wait, the better it gets' - a reference tothe eight years taken to developthe crane in association with AlJaber to meet the increasinglydemanding needs of a continuallychanging lifting industry.

The end result appears to havebeen worth the wait giving a cranethat is based on the tried and tested components of the CC8800-1yet with the addition of the doubleboom gives a 3,200 tonne liftingcapacity and a maximum loadmoment of 44,000 metre tonnes. This combination gives erectionsavings in terms of time and spacewhen compared with ring liftcranes and jacking towers.

Alex Mullins, general manager of Al Jaber Heavy Lifting, outlined thelong and at times, difficult birth ofthe Twin.

“In 1999 the largest crane was the600 tonne capacity CC12600, butdue to the changing heavy liftingsector, we could see a demand fora crane with a 2,000 tonne liftcapacity,” said Mullins. “So we putthis to various manufacturers butonly Demag responded positivelyoffering a CC5800 (1,000 tonne)mounted on a ring attachment.Although we rejected this, Demagresponded with a CC8800 which in2002 looked to be a good solution.”

“Changing markets and requirementsmeant that by 2003 the capacity hadto be upped to 3,000 tonnes with aredesign of the ring attachments. By2005 Al Jaber asked for a modulardesign along the lines of theCC8800-1, so that it would be easily transportable with the heaviest component being 60tonnes and widest 3.5 metres.”

Terex - Demag had in fact first hadthe twin boom idea in 1999 basedon the CC2800, but it was too costly and the capacity too small.

to 14 metres wide, which is thebase for the 10 metre diameterintegrated circular track with rollersystem. The front superstructure of the CC8800-1 is doubled whereas the rear frame has beenincorporated unchanged.

The counterweight carrier and twoSuperlift trays of the CC8800-1 areconnected into a patented Twincounterweight system of 1,740tonnes, allowing the counterweightto be easily adapted to the requirements of the lifting job andachieve the full manoeuvrability of the crane.

Boom boomAlthough only rigged to 68 metresat the handover ceremony, the mainboom can be extended up to 117metres long and can be combinedwith a luffing jib of the same length, resulting in a maximum hook heightof more than 235 metres.

For erecting components in petrochemical facilities, a Vesselliftis available. Made up of parts of theluffing fly jib, this makes it possibleto erect distillation columns of 100metres in length and weighing upto 1,800 tonnes.

With transport and assembly assimple as a single boom machine, the parallel boom arrangementreduces rigging times as proceduresare just doubled.

The Twin also uses the familiartouch screens and joysticks of the

Terex Demag's new CC8800-1 Twin is an impressive crane. Claiming to be the world'slargest lattice boom crawler crane that can travel with a load, the machine was shown forthe first time at its hand-over ceremony to newowner Al Jaber Heavy Lifting earlier this month.

But the main advantage of the Twinis that it can theoretically pick andcarry its full load chart and ismobile when fully rigged. Unlikering cranes and lifting platformswhich impede construction siteoperations while they are erected onsite, the Twin can be erected awayfrom the site and also collect a loadand carry it to its final destination.

The format is obviously right asTerex-Demag has firm orders fortwo more machines and longer-term expects as many as 10 operating around the world.

However, over the following years, ithad worked with Al Jaber proposingvarious ring type machines untilarriving at the final version.

Twin PowerThe main feature of the Twin is itsdouble main boom arrangementwhich increases the lifting capacityof the CC8800-1 by a factor ofalmost four in certain configurations.Like the main boom, the luffing flyjib and the Superlift mast are alsodoubled up and connected bycross-bracings and all winches andhook blocks are provided in pairs. The undercarriage has been extendedby a three metre connecting structure

Terex-Demag IC-1 control systemwhich includes auto diagnosticfunctions making it easier to locatefaults on-site.

Increased productivityAll standard 1,600 tonne CC8800-1sare able to be upgraded with aTwin kit to the full 3,200 tonne liftcapacity when the Twin kit is fitted. The Twin also has two identicaldrive units that operate independently and a second independent control system.Should one engine or control system fail - for example as a resultof a lightning strike - the CC8800-1Twin can continue to work.

Alex Mullins of Al Jaber HeavyLifting explains the evolution of theCC8800-1 Twin.

Italy is the home of the loadercrane and also has a healthynumber of access and mobilecrane manufacturers, not to mention a few telehandler specialists. This year's show willcover a total of 260,000 squaremetres of space and like manymajor international shows, SAIEcovers a wide range of buildingmaterials from baths to bricks(mainly in the 15 exhibition halls).Unless you are in the process ofbuilding a new home, make yourway outside where most of thecranes and access exhibitors arelocated in the 80,000 sq metresof outdoor space.

Italian engineers are among thefinest in the world and the manufacturers have the ability toconvert the design concepts intothe metal with the minium of compromise. So if you are lookingfor the latest innovations, conceptsand ideas you really should makethe effort to visit SAIE. The new Bologna-Fiera motorwayis now in operation, hopefullyreducing the length of the trafficjams. We are also told that majorchanges inside the exhibition area - including raised connectingwalkways between halls and newservice areas - have also made iteasier to get around.

In terms of new product launchesmany Italian producers prefer tokeep this secret until the showopens, but you can expect a largenumber of innovations from theloader crane, truck mounted andspider lift manufacturers.

Here is a brief look at just a few of the new products that we knowwill be at the show.

Loader cranesIf you are looking for lorry loadercranes, SAIE is the best show - theresimply isn't a wider and more variedselection of machines anywhere.World leaders, Palfinger and Hiabmay not be Italian but most of therest of the sector is! Fassi, Effer,Amco Veba, PM, Ferrari, Cormaghand Pesci will all be there and mostwill unveil new machines and newtechnology. Non Italian manufacturerPalfinger is using the show to kickoff its 80, new generation loadercranes that it plans to introduce overthe next three years with the firstmodels of its new 'High Performance'crane series on display.

Possibly trying to take on the Italianmanufacturers on home soil, Palfingeris obviously pushing home its globaladvantage (and annoying the localmanufacturers) by using the slogan'we've made the best even better'.

At the heart of this €80 millioninvestment is its new hexagonaltube production plant at the Lengau

plant in Austria. Over the next threeyears, existing crane models willbe replaced and the product rangewill be extended. On display atSAIE will be the PK 8501K, PK 8502,PK 9001EH, PK 11001K, PK 11002,and PK 12001EH.

If its Octoberthis must be

23October 2007 cranes & access

If its October and the conkers are here, itmust be SAIE. Yes, Italy's premier annual construction show is once again upon us and this year it will be bigger than ever. With Italian crane, access, lorry loader andtelehandler manufacturers steadily increasingsales into the UK, now might be a good timeto visit the show and also take-in a largehelping of Bologna.

Palfinger will be showing its PK8501Kas well as several new models.

Three new cranes will be unveiled on the Effer stand

Palfinger also builds Epsilon cranesfor the handling of timber and scrapwhich are also suited to heavy graband muck-away use. Look out fortwo E120Z models and the 'tripleZ'solution on the stand.

Its aerial platform division Bison-Palfinger will be showing its newTA25 Business, 3,5 tonne truckmounted machine first seen atBauma earlier this year.

Effer's 400 square metre stand willhave at least three new loadercranes on show including the worldpremier of the 100 tonne metrecapacity 1355-8S - the only modelon display that will be mounted ona truck - and the 470.

SAIEc&a

Page 24: Articulated Crawler boom lifts cranes€¦ · October 2007 cranes & access Comment 5 News 6 MBO at Ainscough, APS - IPS to form joint venture, AFI takes North East, world’s highest

The 1355-8S features a decagonalboom profile and eight hydraulicextensions giving a maximum horizontal reach of more than 19metres and a lifting height of 24metres. The main new feature of thecrane however are its X-shapedoutriggers (the Effer CroSStab concept) which is claimed to giveimproved stability over the crane'sfull 360 degree working area without increasing the mountingspace on the truck.

The 470, on display for the first time inItaly, is also worth a look - shown inthe 6S version which has six hydraulicextensions and a four section fly-jib.Decagonal profile boom, continuousslewing and the latest 1300daNgrade steel means that the new fly-jib - with an articulation angle of200 degrees - has a lifting capacityclaimed to be 70 percent higher thanprevious jibs of comparable size.

Pick and carry cranesSAIE is also one of the best showsto look for industrial pick and carrycranes. The vast majority of theseare now built in Italy and mostmanufacturers will be exhibiting.Market leaders such as Valla andOrmig always have impressivestands. Valla will almost certainlybe showing something new in theelectric pick and carry line or perhapsa new tracked machine?

Ormig will be showing several cranesincluding its 10 tonne capacity, 70degree angle rear steer 10tmE anda 60 tonne, diesel powered unit.

The company will also exhibit its 80tonne capacity 804AC commerciallymounted truck crane, with a sixsection boom giving a maximumreach of 48 metres. With an overallweight of 32 tonnes and a 2.5 metrewidth and 3.4 metre height, theunit makes for a good assist crane.

Other cranesThe major mobile crane producerswill all be there along with a numberof local producers, but this yeardon't expect to see too many towercranes as they are only in attendanceevery other year.

AccessAll of the Italian truck mounted and spider lift producers will be out in force, so expect some newdevelopments from Pagliero,Oil&Steel, GSR, Socage and CTE all of whom are local. Italy is alsobecoming a major centre for mastclimbers and SAIE is usually agreat opportunity to see the latestdevelopments from companies likeMaber, Rovers, Electroelsa and Safi.

One thing is for sure - you are likelyto see powered access productshere that you will not see elsewhere. On the non-powered side this is ascaffold and ladder year. The Italiansproduce some of the most competitively priced alloy towersand ladders in the world, their onlyproblem is finding dealers. So if youare looking for a new product linethen this is the year to go.

TelehandlersWhile Italy is not home to one of thetop three worldwide manufacturers,it can boast more producers thanany other country and it can alsolay claim to many, if not most ofthe innovations introduced over theyears, such as side mountedengines and 360 degree models. In fact virtually all of the world's360 degree telehandlers are produced in Italy! If you have anyinterest in telehandlers the Merlostand is a must. The companyalways shows off its latest ideasand developments here. It will be arare SAIE that Mr Merlo does notlaunch some radical new idea. Thecompany is also likely to use theshow to gather more reaction andfeedback on its telehandler-based,self propelled articulated boom(See page 31).

Other Italian telehandler companiesthat are committed to grabbing alarger share of the world marketare Dieci, which has consistentlylaunched new products at themajor shows, and Farasin, now freefrom Haulotte and showing its 360degree machine first seen as a prototype at Bauma. Bobcat mightalso show something new as wellas its T2250 which was unveiled atBauma.

The general demand for all thingsconnected with lifting - from compacttelescopic crawler cranes and selferecting tower cranes to spider andtruck mounted platforms - meansthat there are guaranteed to be surprise launches. A trip to Bolognais certainly worthwhile, but if youcan't make it this year, look out forupdates during and after the showon www.vertikal.net. Ciao.

How to get thereAer Lingus and British Airways flydirect to Bologna, AlItalia stops inMilan or Rome, while Easy Jet flies to Rimini from where there is a direct train connection to theshowground.

If flying with Ryanair be warned the Bologna it flies to is in factForli, 84 km and a €100 taxi ridefrom Bologna. There is a bus/railconnection from Forli but the journey to Bologna takes at least an hour.

articulated boomsc&a

Articulated self propelled boomsfirst appeared in the early 1980'sbut in those days most were twowheel drive and powered by battery or propane. Initial thinkingfor these industrial machines wasthe lower outreach for a givenheight meant that they could bemore compact and/or lighterweight. Some manufacturersbelieved that there was littlepoint in taking a multi-linkagemachine over rough ground. Some also thought that all thosejoints would not stand up theshake, rattle and roll.

The machine that changed all thatwas probably the Grove ManliftAMZ66. When introducing its firstarticulated machine in 1986 severalyears after Simon, Genie, Snorkeland JLG, the company thought itought to do something different. So it went to 60ft when all otherswere clustered around 30 and 45ft.It added four wheel drive and fourwheel steer. The result was a runaway

success and one of Manlift's mostprofitable aerial lift launches.

Simon soon followed putting jeepaxles under its industrial models andbefore long most manufacturers wereoffering rough terrain versions of their45's and looking at the 60ft market.

Many of these early models thatwere quick conversions of industrialmachines were less than successful. The Snorkel UNO which sported balloon tyres gained a solid reputationbut Genie was the first to followand exceed Grove's lead by introducing the concept to the 45ftmarket in a solid winning package -the Z45/22 4WD.

BenchmarkAlthough it looked like a regulararticulated boom with massivetyres, it featured a big engine withgood hydraulics giving it real roughterrain capability. Soon it becamethe benchmark for all 45ft 4x4 articulated booms and helped convert this sector from electric to rough terrain.

Most rough terrain articulated boomproducts on the market today buildon the principles set by the GenieZ45/22 4WD most it not all offergreat off-road ability with a fantasticworking envelope and in somecases a narrower overall width.

Interestingly, the European marketfor these off-road articulated boomsis larger than the North American. Why? Many American contractorsprefer straight boom machines fortheir rugged works. They like theextra reach and the faster simplerlift mechanism. And they believe, amore rigid platform. This latter pointis more of a hang-over from the

past than modern reality. Withmost straight telescopics nowsporting jibs while tighter tolerancesand chunkier structures have madearticulated booms more rigid, there isvery little difference between the two.

The biggest new development inthe articulated rough terrain marketis without question the road-goingmodels launched earlier this yearby Merlo (See separate story).Whether this catches on time willtell but they do offer an alternativefor short duration work as well asoffering a new level of rough terrain capability.

New arrivalAnother new arrival which hastaken off in both the UK and Hollandis the new Nifty HR21 Bi-Energy.Nifty, which only builds articulatedbooms, has come a long way in the Rough Terrain market, somehow managing to squeezesome extra outreach from its models at the same time as reducing the overall width.

The company has quietly introduced

The popular Genie Z80.

Rough,

a wide product range and taken asignificant market share where itsproducts are sold. The off-roadcapability of its current range is afar cry from the first Height Ridersof the late 80's that bogged downat the mere thought of mud. Thecompany's HR12 4x4 is a gutsymachine which combined with itslight weight, makes it a great performer on soft ground.

The lightweight Nifty HR21 is a goodperformer on soft ground.

It will be interesting to see howthis smaller end of the marketdevelops. Until now most articulatingboom lifts below 45ft have beenelectric or Bi-Energy slab machines. This raises several questions: Are there sufficient applications fora 33ft platform height articulatedrough terrain boom and if so willthe rental market see the benefit of buying such machines? Also will they continue to provide 45ftmachines for this work? With anincreasing number of buyers goingfor 50ft booms (stretched 45's) perhaps this opens up a gap wideenough to attract smaller models.

The fact that neither Genie, JLG orUpRight/Snorkel are likely to bedrawn into this sector and that the33ft Haulotte is heavy and wide incomparison, (in essence a differentmachine falling closer to the 45ftmodels), will limit the take up.Haulotte's HA16PX on the otherhand is attracting buyers becauseof its performance. With a workingheight of 52ft and 30ft of outreach, and compact dimensions, themachine has good ground clearance and gradeability.

Nifty on its own is unlikely to create a major market, assumingthat the underlying demand isthere. It needs at least one of themajor producers to introduce a similar model. With the big three

continuing to ignore the now significant market for electricmachines of this height and size, it is difficult to imagine a rough terrain version coming from themanytime soon.

Currently Matilsa is the only othercompany with something similar. Its Parma 13D offers a similar package but also incorporates anoscilating axle and can be equippedwith outriggers for levelling on slopes.

Another new development this yearwas to be the re-introduction of theUpRight AB46RT, the acquisition ofSnorkel might well have put a stopto this however. The AB46 lookedlike something out of Mad Maxwith its massive tyres, unusualpositioning of the engine in thechassis and its small superstructure. UpRight doesacquire three badged articluatedSnorkel machines the AB50JRT,AB60JRT and AB85JRT.

Higher endIn recent years the 80 to 85ft articulated boom has become a relatively common piece of kit.Models are available from Haulotte,JLG, Genie and Snorkel - now ofcourse also badged as UpRight.

The JLG 800AJ has led this marketwith more than 3,000 units delivered, while the Genie Z80/S has alsobecome quite a popular unit withits similar lift mechanism. JLG iscurrently upgrading its units with afairly sophisticated working envelopemanagement system. This will notonly prevent overloads but will also ensure that the machine’s twobooms are kept within the permittedworking envelope.

The Haulotte HA260PX andSnorkel/UpRight AB85J differ fromthe Genie and JLG in that they bothhave conventional single sectionparallelogram risers, compared tothe telescopic risers on the formerunits. The Haulotte is also lower inthat its 26 metres is a workingheight rather than a platformheight, but at 77.6ft it is relativelyclose to the other three units. Themachine also offers a lower grossweight - almost two tonnes lowerthan the JLG - and a narrowerwidth, being less than 2.4 metrescompared to 2.5 metres on the JLGand Genie and 2.6 metres for theSnorkel. However where it wins onthe compact dimensions and lowerweight it gives up on the outreach, being two metres short of theGenie and Snorkel and a full threemetres short of the JLG. However if

articulated boomsc&a

Matilsa incorporates an oscilating axle and can also be equipped with outriggersfor levelling on slopes.

you are looking for pure outreachthen a telescopic boom will serveyou better.

When Merlo introduced its machineat Bauma, it did so with a view ofgenerating industry opinion andcomment prior to going into production. While there are a fewissues with the prototype machine, the concept looks like it might takeoff. It will be interesting to chart itsdevelopment and impact on othermanufacturers in the rough terrainsector, particularly those with bothaerial lift and telehandler divisions.Watch this space. However, the AB46 did perform well

on rough terrain and scored thehighest in the last Vertikal Check forthis type of machine back in 2001.Interestingly the six rough terrainarticulated boom lifts evaluated atthat time are all still on the market -45 to 50ft units entered by Genie,JLG, Haulotte, Snorkel, UpRight and Manitou.

The company not present at thattime was Nifty, which as we havesaid, now boasts an impressive line up of rough terrain articulatedbooms. Aichi, so far a straightboom company is set to join thismarket sector towards the end of2008 or start of 2009. It is notknown yet what size of machinethis will be, although it is likely tobe either a 50ft or 65ft model.Given the company's reputation interms of solid engineering and reliability, its first articulated boom will be eagerly awaited.

The idea of a road going fully selfpropelled boom lift has beenaround for more than over 20years. In 1988 JLG launched theRanger, a relatively short compacttruck mounted lift that could bedriven from the platform whileelevated. Built at the company'splant in Scotland a number ofmachines were sold, but theyproved to be hopelessly unreliable. After several attempts at re-engineering, JLG eventuallyabandoned the product.

The full hogUnlike the above models, the newMerlo lifts go the 'full hog', offeringall of the features of a full specification rough terrain self propelled boom lift with the abilityto travel on the road at speeds ofup to 40kph. In many ways themachine resembles the small twoaxle city cranes that are popular in urban areas.

The planned range consists of threemodels with 18, 23 and 28 metreplatform heights. Merlo had considered exhibiting the prototypesat Bauma 2004 but decided to hold off until it felt the market wasready. The next stage is to build up to 30 pre-production machines for testing and placing with keycustomers for evaluation purposes, before fixing the design for production in 2008.

Once on siteOnce the new Merlo arrives on sitethe platform has to be transferredfrom its travel position and attachedto the jib, roughly a three to fiveminute job. The current method ofdoing this is not physically difficult, but it is way too fiddly for the selfdrive rental market. This has tochange before production designsare finalised.

When ready to work the unit canbe operated from the cab or fromthe platform. The platform’ssuspension system incorporatestwo oscillating axles which lockwhen the boom is lifted. They alsoallow the machine to level itself onuneven or sloping ground by fivedegrees longitudinally and nine

At this year's Bauma Merlo unveiled its platformrange of self propelled, high speed articulated booms. The three prototypes - the result of a four year development project - were shown with the intentionof soliciting access industry opinion and commentprior to finalising the designs and going into production. Leigh Sparrow had the opportunity earlier this year to visit Merlo headquarters in Cuneo,Italy to evaluate and test the new models.

More recently Versalift showed aself propelled truck mount at Bauma2004. The axles were locked whenready to work and the truck couldthen be driven from the platform atup to 12 metres. More recently thecompany has introduced a streetlighting kit which allows users ofits van mounted platforms to drivethe lift between lamp-posts from thebucket as long as the boom is centred.Once in position the stabilisersmust be reset before the boom canrotate or go above a certain height.

The top of the lineI concentrated on the MP30, whichoffers a 30 metre work height, onthe basis that the high cost of thebase unit, will make the top of theline model the most popular. Thelift mechanism comprises a twosection telescopic riser/lower boom,a three section main boom and ajib that provides 180 degrees ofarticulation in any position thankstoo its dual chain drive. The lift isfitted with a two metre by 850mmplatform with full 180 degrees ofrotation, 225 kg lift capacity andelectric, water or air power theplatform as standard.

Controls need a re-thinkThe controls comprise five fullyproportional, paddle type leversmounted in a removable cable typeremote control box similar to thoseused on loader cranes, with ascreen and a mode button to allowthe doubling up of functions. Thedeadman control is a simple wandtype micro switch which althoughlooking a little 'Heath-Robinson',functions very well and would bevery easy to release in an emergency.

As the paddle levers control different functions depending onthe mode selected, the decals onlyshow an A B C D or E requiring theoperator to consult a mini slide outsafety manual located under thecontroller. The current controls arenot practical for every day use andMerlo says that it is planning touse a more conventional control

powerful engine, two stage hydrostatic transmission, all roundhydro pneumatic suspension system, rear axle diff-lock and large wheels.

Merlo has targeted this product atsteel erectors, local authority/

criticism for this product so thefinal production machine is likely to include further significantimprovements. We think that theconcept is potentially a winner,(depending on price) but believethat the current front overhang will put off some buyers.

If Merlo does not make significantchanges before going into productionit could find that a competitor suchas Manitou or Genie with aerial liftdivisions and 360 degree telehandlerslaunches an alternative productwith a four section boom and morecompact travel dimensions andthen scoop the market out fromunder its nose.

The MP30offers up to16 metresof outreach

panel on production machines.

Having said this, operating themachine smoothly is very easy. The functions are reasonably fastand have full multi-function capability. The feel in the elevatedbasket is very solid and the substantial base machine reassuring.

Outreach on the two larger modelsis restricted so that in the situationwhere a fully telescoped main boomis lowered from the lift cylinder thefunction will stop when it reachesthe cut off point, forcing the operator to telescope in beforecontinuing to lower the boom. With 16.5 metres maximum outreach the MP30 is a little shorteven when compared to regularself propelled articulated booms.

On the 30, the lower boom mustalso be raised before it can be telescoped (the 20 and 25 havefixed lower booms) this will normallybe the first thing the operator will do,leaving the lower boom telescopefor when extra height is required.

The top of the lineAs the lower boom is raised it pullson a mechanical linkage that raisesthe hinged counterweight slabs, effectively extending their ballastingeffect when the boom is up whilelowering and centralising it to reducethe centre of gravity and centralisingit for road travel. When the lowerboom/riser is raised, the machine hasminimal tailswing, Merlo says that itwill be possible to set pre-establishedlimits on the lower boom positionin order to prevent it being loweredor rotated into a traffic lane.

Stowed length a missed opportunity

The overall chassis length is relatively compact at around 4.5metres but this includes the

municipality work such as streetlighting and tree trimming and ofcourse industrial applications onlarge sites. We feel that it also haspotential within the rental market, replacing some 30 metre truck

lighting board on a 500mm extension which can be removedwith two pins, reducing the lengthto around four metres.

Boom overhang at the front andrear make the stowed machinesoverall length to just over eightmetres, which while compact for aself propelled boom of this size is,in our opinion, unnecessarily long.A four section boom with a littleless overhang at the rear and minimal overhang at the frontwould have created a much better'city lift' although up and over reachwould have been reduced a little.

On rough terrain the platforms willbe excellent thanks to their telehandler running gear with

mounts for inner city and congestedapplications and where the abilityto drive at height is appreciated or desirable.

Comments welcomeMerlo says that it is very keen totake on board any comments and

The counterweight is raised as the lower boom goes up

The upper controls are not self evident and will need to change

The platformis verystable

We felt that the front and rear overhangwas greater than ideal.

The Saints gomarching upWhen contractors needed to reach and inspectthe upper levels of Southampton (the Saints)Football Club's St Mary's stadium, The PlatformCompany recommended a Genie Z-135/70 articulated boom lift and a Genie S85 straightboom for the work. The main challenge was to clear the outer wall which is around 18metres high and reach out to inspection points near the top of the 36 metre high roofline. With more than 23 metres up and overreach and 21 metres of outreach the Genie was ideally suited for the job.

The Saints - which moved into St Mary's stadium in 2001 - is currently mid-table in its second season in the Coca-ColaChampionship, following its relegation after a 27 year spell in the top flight league in 2005.

The Genie needed its 23 metres up and over reach aswell as its 21 metes of outreach for the contract at

the Saints football ground.

vert ikal daysc&aHaydockback onthe mapMost exhibitors reported goodlevels of business with strongsales of product from their stands. While the numbers of visitors didnot measure up to the big generalconstruction equipment shows, every visitor counted and everyonecertainly had time to talk. Thenew event was different in thatonce visitors arrived everythingwas included, from parking tocoffee and cakes to lunch andrefreshments. A number of visitorscommented how nice it was tonot keep having to dip their handsin their pockets some even said'that it was the best day out theyhad had in a long time', really!

Although the event was all aboutpeople, the focus of the show wasstill the equipment and services thateach of the exhibitors were offering. In the following pages we bring you asmany photographs of the event as wecan fit in three pages on the basis thata picture speaks a thousand words.

That said a number of exhibitsdeserve a special mention, some of the major crane manufacturersdecided that given that this was aBauma year there was no point inparticipating in Vertikal Days, preferring to join in next year.

Some crane companies howevermade exceptional efforts with theirexhibits. MTI, the Jost distributor, used the event to unveil the newJost JTL 68.4, flat top hydraulic luffing tower crane. The crane, which can be assembled with a midsized All terrain crane (the heaviestcomponent weighs less than fivetonnes) has a 40 metre jib with a jibtip capacity of 1,500kg and has amaximum lift capacity of fourtonnes. The first unit was sold toCity Lifting who used its new sevenaxle Spierings to dismantle the newcrane and take it home with them.

City Lifting conveniently had a standadjoining that of MTI on which itexhibited both the new Spieringsand one of its Comansa compactcity tower cranes. The top slewingcrane was assembled in the sametime as it takes to put up a selferecting tower crane.

Cranes UK flew the flag for themobile crane fraternity exhibiting

three of the all-new Tadano Fauncranes launched at Bauma, including the 40 tonne ATF40G-2,50 tonne ATF50G-3 and 90 tonneATF90G-4 the first of these cranesto arrive in the UK. In fact staff inboth Germany and the UK workedflat out to make sure that the craneswere shipped in time to make it toHaydock. The company said that it had a great show and looked forward to next year's event.

Local crane hirers, Bob Francis andAinscough supported the event, along with access sales and rentalcompanies AJ access, Easi-UpLiftsand Facelift, all helping to bring acranes and access show back tothe North West.

Ainscough showed a new fall arrestsystem for trailers. The extremelysimple built in safety net can bedeployed and stowed in less thantwo minutes, is very light weightand takes up no room in the trailer. The company reported strong interest in the device.

In addition the event attracted someof the largest aerial lifts in the country including the world’s largestspider lift, the Teupen Leo 50 fromRanger Equipment; the UK's largesttruck mounted lift, the 90 metre

Bronto S90HLA from Zenith; theworld's largest scissor lift, the 32metre Holland Lift G320 and theworld's largest spider crane, theUnic 706.

It was also the first appearance inthe UK for the new Leguan scissorlifts, PB Liftechnik's new electricscissor lifts, Platform Basket's new15.75 spider lift, Haulotte's new telescopic handler, Uprights newboom range from Snorkel, the newidentity from Instant towers, thenew Ruthmann truck mounts, AllanAccess's new van mount with nooutriggers, the CTE Power Tower andthe PL9000 from Planet Platforms.

In summaryThe new concept worked well andall visitor input was highly positive. Many stated that they were “happyto see cranes back at Haydock” andin a post show written exhibitor survey, 88 percent said that hadalready decided to exhibit next year- the majority voting for HaydockPark on June 25th/26th 2008.

The first Vertikal Days event for the lifting industry held at HaydockPark near Manchester in late September was beset by wet and windyweather. In spite of this more 1,000 visitors and exhibitors made it anevent to remember. In total 53 companies exhibited a wide range ofproducts from the three metre high Power Tower to the first sevenaxle Spierings mobile tower crane in the UK with City Lifting.

The more likely reason for thesurge in the number of reports is better communications. The internet has caused a massive increase in the amountof news reported. Now when acrane tips over it is all too soon a subject on various blogs andlocal news stations. So what we are more likely seeing is just how commonplace accidentsfrom poor outrigger cribbing and set up have always been.

Who's responsible? One of the issues that does not helpthe situation is confusion over whois responsibility for the ground conditions. In the UK, CPA rulesclearly place this onus on the contractor or developer rather thanthe crane provider. This evenapplies to contract lifts, where thecontractor is likely to assume thathe is paying the crane rental company to take responsibility for

every aspect of the lift. The CPAargues that a crane companyshould ask about the ground butthat only the contractor or developer is able to categoricallydefine and be responsible for theground conditions.

Saying this any crane hire companywith any pretension to professionalismor any crane driver worth his saltwill take the cribbing of outriggersvery seriously. Most outrigger accidents would be avoided by taking even the most basic ofmeasures, such as using a purposedesigned outrigger mat. Commonsense will also help enormously, agood crane or larger truck mountedaerial lift operator will develop theability to judge ground conditions, developing almost a second sensefor spotting when ground conditionsmight not be what they seem. Thisis not of course foolproof but it canalert an operator to investigate further or at the very least give theground a good testing. The biggest

challenge of course comes fromhidden underground voids such asseptic tanks, but once again thereare generally hidden clues to wherethese might exist. Old brownfield, industrial or residential sites are ofcourse particularly risky.

If in doubt test the ground

An operator of a small to mediumsize crane can always test theground by taking the weight of theload (but keeping it close to theground) over each outrigger jack, ideally at a greater radius than the lift.

This of course is more of an insurance helping confirm that information given by the contractoris reliable. When any doubt existsa good operator will also use thelargest mats he can, thus spreadingthe load over a wider area andkeeping ground bearing pressuresdown. We recommend that matsare always used unless setting upon a purpose built test pad. Eventhen it is a good habit to get into.

So which mats.Wood, steel, nylon, polythene allcan be good as long as they aredesigned and specified for the job. When buying wood cribbing it is veryimportant to buy from a supplierthat understands the applicationand supplies timber specifically forthe job. He will only provide finegrade hardwood timber that will

Mats, pads and common senseIf you are a regular visitor to www.vertikal.net youwill have noticed over the past year or so an apparentincrease in the number of cranes and aerial liftstipping over due to the ground giving way under oneor more outriggers. It is hard to believe that the earthhas become softer or more fragile, although there isa correlation between rainfall and accidents causedby ground conditions. Ground baked hard by droughtwill usually be more forgiving than waterloggedground. It is also hard to believe that operators areshoring or cribbing under outriggers less often thanin the past, or that outrigger pad loadings haveincreased significantly.

A set of good quality polythene composite mats

Using mats is only thestart. They need to be used correctly too!

Page 42: Articulated Crawler boom lifts cranes€¦ · October 2007 cranes & access Comment 5 News 6 MBO at Ainscough, APS - IPS to form joint venture, AFI takes North East, world’s highest

both withstand the pressuresinvolved and will not quickly developcracks that allow water to penetrateand then start the freeze thawprocess that will quickly make thewood unsafe for the job at hand.

On larger wood cribbing, steel strapping on ends and high levels ofpreservatives will massively extendits safe working life. The same appliesto larger timbers for use as crawlercrane mats and access trackways.

suitable handles for the size andweight. This might be rope or chainhandles or simple cut-out handgrips. Finally you might want tohave holes cast or drilled in tomatch with retaining pins or boltson the deck of your crane or lift.

company which was the subject of a Management Buy Out fromBabcock in 2006, also providesheavy duty standard panels forheavier cranes and can constructcustom designed lifting platformsfrom standard components. Rola-Trac takes a different approachto providing heavy duty temporaryroads for cranes and lifts. It has asystem it calls I-Trac which is madeup of 0.8 square metre interlockingcomposite panels which weigh15kg each. Rola-Trac says that asingle man can lay up to 100 squaremetres an hour.

When things go wrongAs we have already said, impropercribbing under outriggers is the single biggest cause of accidentswith cranes and aerial lifts. Whenyou allow for the fact that themajority of aerial lifts are now selfpropelled, the statistics becomeeven more shameful - shamefulbecause it is an accident that isusually easily avoided, caused bypoor planning and most often of all by laziness and/or ignorance.

The following are some recentexamples of what can go wrongwhen operators do not bother totake the ground conditions into consideration.

Operator looses life.

A 100 tonne crane working at anoffshore fabrication yard on BintanIsland, Indonesia tipped over whenone of the outriggers punched ahole in what seemed like goodground. Sadly the operator, whoworked for the crane's owner, Tat Hong, was hit in the head by a flying outrigger pad as he jumpedfrom his cab. He was reported as

dead on arrival at hospital. In thiscase if he had stayed in the cab hewould most likely have survived.

Amazingly in this case steel outrigger mats were available butwere lying in a pile by the side ofthe crane, there was also plenty of space here to have 'tested' the ground.

outr iggers c&a

A superb steel outrigger mat on Eisele'snew 103 metre Wumag WT1000.

A well planned set up for a challenginglift over a new metro station. A precastconcrete pad removes the slope, a largepurpose-built wood mat and two reinforced I beams with clamps thenspread the load onto a vertical beam.

Buy the best, its cheaper! When it comes to nylon or betterstill, polythene, the simple rule isbuy the best. Good quality mats willlast the life of the crane and cost alot less over the long term, not tomention the peace of mind theybring. Suppliers of good qualitymats will usually be happy to customise your pads in a wide variety of ways, including supplyingthe colour you want, branded withyour company logo.

They can also provide non-slip orfriction surfaces, for example youmight specify a pad with a roughtexture on one side to grip theground, while the other is smooth toallow flop-down outriggers to slideas they lift the machine. Also makesure that pads are fitted with

Temporary tracks The conversion of Europe's mobilecrane rental fleet from truck mountedcranes to All Terrain crane has helpedconquer the challenges for cranes to gain access to construction siteswith bad ground conditions. However high axle loads and grossvehicle weights still create accessproblems on the worst sites orwhen crossing unprepared ground in emergency situations.

Those challenges are even greaterwhen working in residential areas. With between five and eight tonneson a single tyre and gross weightsof between 30 to 95 tonnes, a craneor big truck mounted lift can wreakhavoc with driveways, lawns orkerbs. Thankfully there are anincreased range of products on themarket to smooth the way. The original purveyor of such productswas Trakway, now Eve Trakway. The company made its way rentingout what was a patented aluminiumroadway that it simply rolled outfrom the back of a truck. The

Coping with slippery slopesCranes or lifts with outriggers areparticularly adept at setting up inslopes, although this often requireswell planned cribbing. Lifting equipment with spider type outriggers can level up much steeper slopes. The Chill Factor - anew indoor ski slope being built inManchester by Sir Alfred McAlpine -presented a major challenge evenfor the spider. The facility has twoslopes- the nursery slope with a gradient of 10 degrees and thesteeper main slope at just over 15 degrees. A mix of Teupen andOmme spider lifts were used to gainaccess over the slopes. The TeupenLeo 23GT models were helped tolevel up with some factory designedwedge shaped outrigger mats toallow the machine's pads to remainlevel. The Omme lifts had pads thatwere able to cope with slopes of upto 21 degrees. Given the steepnessand the fact that the concrete surfaceof the slopes were smooth and slippery, non-slip rubberized matswere used under the pads and themachines were fitted with anchorlines attached to eyebolts at the topof the slopes.

The Teupens were equipped with special wedge shaped outrigger mats.

The Ommes were able to handle the 15° slope but used the non slip mats.

Don Seddon has spent his careerworking with hydraulics starting in1956 with Cincinnati millingmachines, an early adopter ofhydraulics to drive its machinetools. From there he went on towork with Vickers and AbexDenison before starting up A&Dfluid power in 1974 to producehydraulic valves. More recently hehas served as a design consultantfor hydraulic systems and valves.

Having published a highly successfulbook Diesel Troubleshooter, hedecided to do the same with thetopic that has absorbed most of hisworking life. He called on NickPeppiat of Hallite seals to assist himand to write the chapters on seals.

The book is very cleverly written in that it is highly accessible anduseful for those who have minimalexperience with hydraulics whilealso handy and useful for those who make their livings fromhydraulics, including engineersresponsible for the design ofhydraulic circuits. The writing styleis very readable and should absorbanyone with a modicum of mechanical aptitude and yet doesnot come across as condescendingor over simplistic for hydraulics professionals. On the contrary, forthe more experienced it serves as a reminder of some of the basicswhile covering some handy tips and pointers.

It packs a tremendous amount ofinformation into its 175 pagesincluding a brief but handy reference section in the back, listing all of the relevant standardsand guidelines as well as conversionfactors and formulae.

In summary, a book for anyone with an interest in hydraulics, fromthe apprentice mechanic to seniorhydraulics designer.

Pasma to appoint atraining scheme managerPasma is looking to recruit someone to manage the national training schemeand to ensure that the association's high standards are maintained and improved.

It is looking for a manager with experience and who already has a thoroughknowledge of the scheme itself together with the ability to manage and buildon the success already achieved.

As such this critical post is likely to attract someone who is already involvedin the tower industry. Possibly a seasoned professional or trainer who islooking for a new challenge? However they will need to have good negotiatingand diplomacy skills to work with wide range of companies and industrybodies that have a stake in the training programme.

This should be an excellent post for a person with a passion for trainingand the industry. More details can be found on the PASMA website:www.pasma.co.uk

face to face c&a

Over the years, there can't be manytop-flight sportsmen that at thesame time studied for an MBA.Eric Etchart is one of the few. Aftergrowing up near Biaritz in southwest France and then studyingEconomics at Bordeaux, the risingbasket ball star was drafted by aFrench military team based in Parisin the late 70's.

Unlike top basketball players today, there was not a lot of money in thesport at that time and after completinghis post graduate studies in 1984,Etchart had to focus on earning a living.

“I liked languages so coupled withmy academic background, international business seemed alogical way forward,” said Etchart.

His first job was with crane companyPPM in sales and distribution in theMiddle East. Here he was introducedto the reach stacker which reallyattracted his interest as he couldsee the potential worldwide for thistype of product. It also gave himaccess to the Asian markets, anarea which interested him greatly.Stackers became a substantial businessand helped Etchart rise to internationalsales director within PPM.

When Terex acquired PPM in 1995,Etchart accepted an offer to join Potain.Although his wife had a PR business

in Paris they moved to Italy for twoyears. It was however Potain's jointventure in China, signed in the sameyear which was the main attraction, drawing him back towards Asia.

From 1997 he was based at Potain'soffices in Singapore, this was thebeginning of three tough years ofthe Asian crisis. However, duringthis time (1999) Potain bought outZhangjiagang in China whichbecame a wholly-owned subsidiary. The company then began to developthe business in mainland Chinaadding cranes imported from Franceand Portugal.A few years later in 2001, Potainbecame part of Manitowoc. Asexecutive vice president for Asia andthe Pacific, Etchart was the drivingforce behind the success in theregion. The continuing growth in themarket means that its Chinese plantnow has 1,000 employees. Hiscommitment to making the businessa success included the considerableeffort to learn to speak Chinese inaddition to his other languages. So how did he feel when the positionof president of MCG presented itselfafter spending so many years buildingthe business in Asia?“The opportunity came along and Iwas happy to take it,” said Etchart.“The best way to drive the companyforward is from the front. It hasbeen a very busy six months sincetaking up the position and I amthoroughly enjoying it. My five yearplan includes growing the companyin new markets and this is alreadytaking shape.”In recent months, Manitowoc hasopened a sales and service facilityin Dubai, bought a manufacturingfacility in Saris, Slovakia andacquired Shirke Construction

Equipments of Pune, India - a leadingplayer in the Indian tower cranemarket and manufacturing partnerand distributor for Potain since itacquired Richier in 1982. And thelatest facility to be opened in Baltar,Portugal.

“The Slovakian facility, after beingrefurbished and re-equipped - willserve as the final manufacturing andassembly site for Grove, Potain, andManitowoc cranes, delivering tocustomers in East European markets, particularly in Russia and the CIS, hesaid. “Customers in the region willbenefit from lower shipping costsand faster delivery schedules. Byre-developing an existing facility ona brownfield site, we will be able toget this factory live faster and at alower cost. We are a global player, but committed to local manufacturingclose to the customer base.”

“I will also be looking at adjacentbusinesses with a view to furtheracquisitions,” he said. “We are opento opportunities providing they are agood fit and can be one of the mainplayers in the sector.”

He indicated that this might includemast climbers (but not hoists) andport equipment and also did not ruleout the acquisition of another towercrane manufacturer.

“The new position is very challenging, but I knew what it would involve. I amdealing with the same people andknow well what Glen Tellock, president of Manitowoc expects. Weoperate in a global, 24 hour businessand you have to be everywhere all thetime. I have a great team of peopleready for the opportunities and challenges ahead. The appointmentof a non-American as president ofManitowoc Crane also signifies thedesire to be a global company.”

dThe celebrations connected with Manitowoc's recent opening of its new facility in Baltar, Portugalbrought together many of the company's top brass. An ideal opportunity then to chat with Eric Etchart, promoted to president of the Manitowoc Crane Group in May this year. Mark Darwin fires the questions.

Eric Etchart - essential or favourite….Gadgets: Not a fan because of theshort lifespan. Would rather haveitems such as a watch, antique furniture or paintings which perpetuate an event or person.

Film - Being raised in France, lovesthe films with Michel Audiard dialogue (Les tontons flingeurs, Lecave se rebiffe) and also Spielberg.

Book – likes author AmelieNothomb and continuing to learnlanguages particularly Chinese.

Music - 80s music (Goldman,Cabrel, Lama, Johny HalidaySupertramp) Serge Gainsbourg who wrote the most beautiful textalso Beatles, Rolling Stones andJoe Cocker.

Car – not a big fan anymore – usedto love convertibles when younger.A 4x4 might be needed for theWisconsin snowy winters.

Hobby - Spending time with his wife Monique (unless she goes shopping), family and friends. Basketball, soccer andFrench rugby.

The company is currently in thefinal selection process to findsomeone from outside Manitowocto fill his previous position.

“We need more innovative productsand need to continue our investmentin our differentiator of customercare. We think the market willcontinue to grow and will thereforetake decisions accordingly.Whilst I cannot currently talk aboutnew products, next year's Conexpowill be a show of force for MCGwith several new cranes unveiled.”

There are no shortcuts to creatingvalue in the access rental industry, said Kevin Appleton, CEO of theLavendon Group, the world'slargest access-only rental company, speaking at the firstEuroplatform conference on 11September in Basel, Switzerland.

“The long-term future is likely tobelong to businesses run on a cautious and consistent basis,”said Appleton in his presentationon responsible financial models for access rental.

Appleton warned access rentalcompanies against growing tooquickly. Companies who build theirfleet quickly with high investmentsmay find themselves struggling tomaintain debt repayments whenmarket conditions worsen. He saidan operating model based onextending the lifetime of accessequipment, rather than keepingmachines for just five or six years -was more likely to build value.

This view was echoed by PierrickLourdain, group sales manager ofHaulotte, who predicted forthcomingbankruptcies among Europeanaccess rental companies in thecoming years. He said this might in the future force manufacturers to become more directly involved in rental in order to protect theirinvestments.

Steve Shaughnessy, director of A-Plant, looked at what Europe'srental companies can learn fromthe US, where growth has beendriven mainly by productivity ratherthan legislation. Some US bestpractices are: delivery and service

guarantees, longer standard servicehours, comprehensive in-housetraining, on-site stores for megaprojects, and product modificationsto meet unique applications (e.g.tunnel, file, auto manufacturing, ship repair).

The Europlatform conferenceattracted more than 100 executives, senior managers and ownersof access rental companiesacross Europe.

“Top access management from allover Europe came to Europlatformand made it a great success,” saidTim Whiteman, IPAF managingdirector. “This is a tremendousstart to a series of top-qualityannual conferences.”

The next Europlatform will be heldin September 2008.

FamiliarisationIPAF has issued technical guidancenote F1 on familiarisation, stressingthat operators who intend to use anymachine differing significantly from the machine they have been trained on should receive familiarisationinstruction to cover the differences. This was prepared by the IPAF TrainingCommittee and has also been approvedby the Powered Access Interest Group,a joint committee of IPAF and theConstruction Plant-hire Association (CPA).Technical guidance note F1 can befound at the Publications section ofwww.ipaf.org

A quarter millionvalid PAL CardsThere are now 250,000 people aroundthe world who hold a valid PAL Card(Powered Access Licence), whichproves that they have been trained touse access platforms safely. IPAFmanaging director Tim Whitemanannounced this during the IPAF RentalForum held after the Europlatformconference. IPAF is on target to issuemore than 70,000 cards this year, anew record.

New machine categoriesIPAF has revised the machine categories in its MEWP training programmeand is moving to align with international design standards. The new categories apply to all training as of 1 January 2008. The category changedoes not affect the training received and existing PAL Cards (PoweredAccess Licences) remain valid as specified. The PAL Card is recognised by the Major Contractors Group (MCG) and in many countries. More details on the new categories are at the Training section of www.ipaf.org

Thorough examination isnot maintenanceThorough examination must betreated as separate from maintenance, said consultant TimWatson at the IPAF ProfessionalDevelopment Seminar (PDS) on 19 September.

“A thorough examination is an independent check of a MEWP toensure that any deterioration can be detected and remedied in goodtime,” said Watson. “It should not

be used as a substitute for an effective preventive maintenancesystem.”

A new premium grade, X-life FAGE1 spherical roller thrust bearingsfrom Schaeffler claim to offersignificant improvements in staticand dynamic load ratings as wellas sizeable increases in limitingspeeds and fatigue limiting load.

The technical benefits are either adoubling of life expectancy underthe same loads or similar operatinglife under significantly higher loads. The bearings are suitable for highspeed applications due to lowerfriction levels and the improvedguidance and vibration characteristicsdue to very high running accuracy.

Reduced wear is due to lubricantfilm formation with the lubricantlasting longer because of thelower bearing temperatures.

Performance improvements weremade possible by modifying andimproving the bearing contactgeometry and bearing kinematics. This included adding longer rollerswith larger diameters resulting inthe higher load ratings.

Schaeffler's axial spherical rollerbearings are ideal for applicationsin which very high axial loads arepresent and where shaft deflectionsor misalignments of bearing seatsmust be compensated.

New Deep-CycleGel batteriesTrojan Battery Company has launcheda new Deep-Cycle Gel line of sealedlead acid batteries which it hopeswill expand its market share in theaerial work platform market.

Available in the UK and Ireland throughEnergy Batteries, the new batteriesare completely maintenance freeand require no topping-up or checkingof water levels while providinglong-lasting runtime and battery life.Trojan says that its proprietary Gelformulation prevents stratificationand allowing them to cycle longerand deeper than AGM (AbsorbedGlass Mat - an alternative maintenancefree battery) technology. The batteryrange includes the following sizes:24-Gel, 27-Gel, 31-Gel, and 6V-Gel,the size that is designed to replacethe normal 6 volt scissor lift battery.

The Deep-Cycle Gel batteries offerexceptional durability and are certifiednon-spillable to UN2800 for air, seaor ground transportation, thus makingit an optimal solution for use in health& safety-sensitive environments suchas schools, hospitals, airports andoffice buildings.

Nexans has extended its Buflexrange of polyurethane sheathedreeling energy cables with theaddition of the X'Prem, designedto boost the performance anddurability of cranes operating athigh speeds of up to 150 metresper minute.

The company claims to haveincreased cable longevitysubstantially compared withconventional reeling cables.

Its new design uses a thinner andlighter weight polyurethane sheathenabling it to offer similar performanceto standard rubber sheathed reelingcables, but within a smaller overalldiameter and enhanced abrasionresistance. This enablescrane operatorsand OEMs to utilisesmaller

motorised reels to achieve equal orsuperior productivity, possibly evenwith lower powered motors.

Buflex X'Prem is available in both alow-voltage yellow version, forapplications up to 1kV and a medium-voltage, red or black, version forapplications from 6kV to 20 kV inports and terminals. In addition,

copper twisted pair cablesor optical fibres can beintegrated within the cableto combine advancedcontrol solutions with thecrane power supply.

Developed at its dedicatedHandling Cables

Application Centre inLyon, France, BuflexX'Prem was subjectedto a variety of testsunder severe operating

conditions such asrapid acceleration and

high tensile loads. The company claims it

exceeded 10 times thenumber of test cycles with no

significant deformation, comparedwith standard cables.

Friction-holdjoysticks New from Penny + Giles is a singleaxis friction-hold version of itsJC6000 multi-axis joystick. Thekey feature of the new joystick isthat the lever does not return tocentre when it is released.

It is designed for use in applicationswhere the joystick is used to controlthe speed and forward/reverse direction of the machine. The operatorcan set the speed of movement andthen focus on the steering of the vehicle.

Available with one or two axisconfigurations, it can be suppliedwith non-contact Hall effect sensorsor long-life potentiometer tracks. It is sealed (above the panel) toIP66. Dual outputs are fitted asstandard, allowing the signals to bemonitored and compared for failuredetection in safety critical applicationsand additional independent switchfunctions can be specified fordirectional and center positionindication - vital for vehicle systemstart-up safety.

A 30 metre crane on the newDurham leisure complex providedlocal fire-fighters with the idealopportunity to practice rescuingcasualties from tower cranes.

The complex is being built by localconstruction company MorganAshurst.

“We are always happy to help the fireservice practice rescue drills in a 'realworld' yet controlled environment,”says Morgan's safety, health andenvironment adviser Geoff Sellers.“The skills practiced here may be thelife-saving acts of tomorrow.”

The first rescue session involvedrescuing a casualty trapped at thetop of the crane using an aerial ladderplatform (ALP). Once at full height, the rescue team climbed the rest ofthe crane attached rope accessequipment and lowered the casualtyinto the ladder platform. In the secondsimulation a team climbed the entireheight of the crane, attached linerescue equipment, using it to bringthe casualty down safely.

Ken Ball, assistant district managerfor Durham and Chester-le-Street, said:“There is a lot of construction in the regionusing this type of crane and it is importantfor fire crews to train under realisticcircumstances to perfect their skills.

HSE inspector Barry Trudgian said:"This incident clearly demonstratesthe inherent dangers which exist inany work at height. •Select appropriate work at heightequipment for a specific task

•Assess and determine when it is appropriate to use a ladder

•Correctly locate and safely useladders and stepladders

•Inspect ladders and stepladdersfor damage

Upon successful completion, everydelegate receives a certificate ofcompetence and photocard asobjective proof of competence.Recent additions to the LadderAssociation training networkinclude the HSS Hire Service Groupand Boss Training based in Leeds.

Part 1: Terms, Types andFunctional Sizes - a revision of the currentstandard Part 1.

Part 3: User Instructions - a new part to the standard detailing marking requirements. The association's technical committee has alreadystarted work on consideringthe new requirements.

Part 4: Single or Multiple HingeJoint Ladders - another new part coveringthe requirements for thistype of ladder in detail, including specific testingrequirements.

If a ladder isthe way to goThere are times when a ladder is the best ormost practical piece of access equipment forthe job. In these cases the key is to select theright ladder and to use it safely.

“When you consider the global riskissues across the spectrum of workat height equipment, the ladderremains a very effective and safetool when used properly in appropriate applications. But peopleneed to be trained to use ladders inexactly the same way as they aretrained to use mobile access towersor powered access equipment.”

Completion of the LadderAssociation training course providesthe proof of competence demandedby the Work at Height Regulations.Delivered only by association

Anyone affected by these changesis advised to get copies of therevised EN131 standard. None ofthis currently affects other UK standards for ladders -BS2037:1994 and BS1129:1990.

The proposed draft revision to Part 2: Requirements, Testing and Marking was not adopted and it was agreed that the current1993 version would be retained. However, work will continue in anattempt to develop an acceptablePart 2.

Hi Leigh,

The new Wumag looks very impressive I

have to say and am looking forward to

having a go!!! What's really impressed

me is the carefully concealed safety harness

of the operator.

Regards,

Mark Butler

Director

Zenith Aerial Platforms Limited

Dear Sir,

Surely the operator of the new Wumag 103 would be well advised to wear his safety

harness OVER his coat!

Given the well versed arguments ie arrest vs restraint, correct unhindered deployment

would, in any event, be recommended.

Discussion welcome!

Yours truly,

Paul Woodhead

UK Training Services

Dear Sir,

I could not help but notice that the photos from your Vertikal Days preview story

shows many boom operators without harnesses and one shot of the operator of the

Genie telehandler not wearing a seat belt.

It is hard to get operators to comply with the regulations when the manufacturers

own employees do not. We must set good examples as we never know when a

camera might be capturing us on film.

Yours Sincerely,

Jeff Balanchuck

The Editor, Dear Sir,

Reference Article Heavy Lifting."The Road to Recovery"

May I draw your attention to the last paragraph of the article. I think that the author may have confused theamounts of stone required to build the temporary accessroad and that spilled out of the derailed wagons.

Did he mean 20,000 Tonnes or Cubic Metres for theaccess road ?

I am aware that the Rail Freight industry uses high capacityhopper wagons, I believe these have a payload capacity of100 Tonnes which would mean axle loads of around 30tonnes per axle. On that basis 11 wagons would representa total of around 1,100 tonnes. To have dumped between20,000 and 40,000 tonnes into the River Ouse would needeach wagon to be carrying between 1,818 and 3,636tonnes, or between 200 and 400 wagons! Possibly theAuthor meant Cubic Metres although I think you will findthat one Cubic metre probably weighs one tonne. With kind regards

David H Armsden.

Harnesses over or under? In early September we published photographs on Vertikal.Net of the new 103 metre Wumag WT1000 from Europlatform in Basle. Within an hour wejustifiably had complaints that the operator was not wearing a harness. Shocked that we might have missed this as we had checked that thosegoing up were wearing them, we double checked and found that he was wearing his harness under his heavy jacket. In fact if you looked carefullyyou could just see the lanyard in the original photo. We promptly pointed this out on the web and had a number of responses that open a debate onwhether best practice is better one way or another.

First to spot the camouflaged harness was Mark Butler.

Then the letter/email that best set the scene for a discussion.

On another harness point a reader makes a very validand increasingly important point.

We would appreciate your comments and input on this point.

Well spotted. The 20,000 tonnes was theamount of stone imported to build up the roadand support platform for the crane. When full,

the wagons weighed just 50 tonnes. Ed

Many of the photos used in this article came from this year'sPlatformers Days, where as we have already reported manufacturers had improved immeasurably when it came tothe use of harnesses in booms and other examples of goodpractice. However there were still some notable exceptionsand the telehandler issue, given that it is a closed cab mightspark an interesting debate. Ed

Since the last issue we have continued to run the poll on the use of harnesses on scissorlifts. With more than 1,200 votes, it seems to have settled at around 80 percent againstthe use of harnesses on vertical lifts and 20 percent who believe that they should be worn.
