1.1 ProQuest Dissertations and Theses

Welcome to this session on ProQuest Dissertations and Theses for the Librarian.

This session assumes basic knowledge of the ProQuest platform but a prerequisite is not required.

1.2 Session Objectives

Notes:

Librarians can use ProQuest Dissertations and Theses to maximize subject research at their library.During this session librarians will be shown how to utilize Advanced Search fields that are unique to the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses database.Librarians will then be able to use search results to support subject area collection development and research at their library.

1.3 ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Across Disciplines

Notes:

The Dissertations and Theses database is a multi-disciplinary resource providing material to support all departments and disciplines.

Dissertations are scholarly, reviewed work resulting from comprehensive and original research.

1.4 Look up a specific institution

Notes:

Scroll down on the Advanced Search page to the option to Look Up Universities and Institutions.

1.5 Look up Search Box

Notes:

On the Look Up Universities and Institutions page there is an option to enter a name that contains, or begins with, a search term.

Click on Find to return a list of institutions that match the search query.

Select the desired University or Institution name.

Click on the Add to Search button.

1.6 Add to Search

Notes:

Add to Search will add the name of the Institution as an exact search term.

Click on the Search button to return dissertations and theses from that specific institution.

1.7 Search Results

Notes:

The Results page displays all results from the institution selected and searched.

On the left hand facet selections librarians will now see Subjects published by the specific institution.

The numbers next to the Subject term indicate the quantity of results for that subject.

Click on More to open up additional information by subject.

1.8 Focus of Research

Notes:

After the Subject facet is selected the librarian is able to sort subjects by the Subject name in alphabetical order.

The sort by Count is also an option to display the subject results.

Both sort options allow the librarian to review the focus of research and most popular subjects at their institution.

After reviewing the Advanced Search options specific to the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Database librarians are able to: use the database to help with collection development, support subject area research at their institution and compare their institution to peer institutions.
