Author’s background
Kazuo Ishiguro was born in
Japan; however, he was
nationalized in England. He
is one of the most
celebrated contemporary
authors in the English
speaking world. He won an
award in 1989 for his novel
“The reminds of the day”.
During the year 2005, he
wrote the novel “Never let me go”, here he
exposed ethical issues that we still can see
nowadays.
How society manages children’s minds
In the 1990’s, the English society was in trouble
as a result of the appearance of a heinous illness.
To resolve this problem, some boarding schools
took care of children who have no choices and
taught them that they had to donate organs to
people that needed them in order to survive. In
this especial school children were under
exhaustive medical checkups, because they have
to be very healthy. They provided programs with
especial contents and training. Children should
donate three times during their lives, however
some of them can’t resist medical procedures
and they die after their first donation.
As in every good story, love has to be present.
In this case you can see a love triangle. Kathy,
Tommy and Ruth are real friends, connected by the same future, be donors. Kathy is in love
with Tommy, but she can’t say it to him, Ruth is in love with him too, and Tommy doesn’t
know what he feels. Kathy is the one of them
who has more years to survive, because she
takes care of children, as a nurse; nevertheless,
she must accomplish the same objective in this
institution.
The setting
The story takes place in an alternative world,
very similar to our reality, during the 20th
century. The society has to assure the well-
being of people, so every decision that they
take should be based on benefits for the
community. The book’s author focused his
attention on social and economic problems,
where ethical and society’s survival issues were
dealing.
“Never let me go” is a science fiction book;
nontheless, specialists in this area disagree,
because they think that every society in the
world is always dealing with problems that put
them in confrontation. People have to decide
all the time between following the rules and
live according to what society can offer them,
or following their instinct and find their own
ways to survive and be happy.
We think that this kind of book can blow your
mind, because it will place you in a new world.
On the other hand, it gives you a clear idea of
what life means.
“Your life must now run the
course that’s been set for it”-
Kazuo Ishiguro, Never let me
go.
