The Bible places a high value on women. In some places and times throughout history, women have been adored. At other times, and in some cultures, they have been deplored—treated like property and slaves. God, through His Word, raises the value of women to the honored place intended from His original design.

Godly women are respected in Scripture. A woman of virtue is a crown to her husband and valued above rubies. (See Proverbs 12:4, 31:10.) Women of worship were placed in the role of leading the victory celebration in Israel after the defeat of the Egyptians. (See Exodus 15:20.) Women with wise hearts created material for tapestries in the Tabernacle. (See Exodus 35:25.) Praying women who were barren birthed babies, and one highly-favored woman birthed the Son of God. (See I Samuel 1:10-20; Luke 1:30-31.)

Of all the qualities found in godly women, these ladies may not be given enough credit for their faith. Faith is a trait of godly women that is notable and needed. Great faith was exhibited by women in the Bible and continued in the church throughout the ages.

Without faith, it is impossible to please God. Faith is believing that God exists and that He rewards those who diligently seek Him. Faith is substance when there is nothing to hold in your hand. Faith is evidence for what has been promised but not yet received. Faith is believing that God will do what He said He would do. (See Hebrews 11:1-6.) We should not neglect to honor women for their faith.

Hebrews 11 has been called the hall of fame of faith. In this chapter that describes the faith of great Bible heroes, we see snapshots of wonderful women of faith. Sarah conceived a son in her old age. The mother of Moses, Jocabed, preserved the life of her son by hiding him in a floating bassinet in the river. Rahab demonstrated great faith by protecting the Jewish spies. As a result, she was spared death when the city of Jericho was destroyed.

Hebrews 11:35 speaks of the faith of women who received their dead raised to life again. This is faith

in God at the highest level. We know of at least two women who were examples of this dimension of faith.

There was a Gentile widow at Zarephath who had one son. They had endured a prolonged famine but were at the point of death. God sent Elijah to her house and through the miraculous multiplication of meal and oil, the widow, her son, and Elijah survived the famine. After seeing the hand of God for provision, the son who was spared the famine died from sickness. It seemed like a cruel ending to a wonderful story, but it was not the end. Elijah prayed over the child, and he was raised from the dead. Jesus referred to this story as an example of exceptional faith. (See I Kings 17:8-24; Luke 4:25-26.) The great woman of Shunem also saw her son, who was miraculously conceived, raised from the dead. After the child died, she spoke words of faith saying, “It is well.” (For the full story, see II Kings 4:1-37.)

The stories shared in the Scriptures are for our learning and example, but we do not need to look back a few thousand years to find women of faith. We are blessed to have women among us today who demonstrate great faith in God.

These modern-day heroines demonstrate their faith by their devotion to doctrine, their love for God, and their commitment to their family. They pray for the safety and salvation of their children. They have faith that God will supply all their needs according to His riches in glory. These amazing ladies are strong in faith and are a force to be reckoned with when the Devil messes with their family. In eternity, we will learn just how much the prayers of women of faith produced the miraculous power of God among us. Who knows where we would be without the great faith of our mothers? Thank God for women of faith!

On May 13, we will celebrate Mother’s Day. Please take time to honor your mother for her love, patience, and other qualities. If she has been a spiritual influence in your life, also pause to let her know how much you admire her as one of the great women of faith.
