Her Birth

In one legend, Artemis was born one day before her brother Apollo (Austin’s God). Her mother gave birth to her on the island of Ortygia. Then, after her birth, she helped her mother to Delos, where she delivered Apollo.

The Story of Actaeon

Artemis was very serious about staying a virgin and would cause great harm to any man who disagreed with her wish. For example: In one story it says that Actaeon, while out hunting, accidentally came upon Artemis and her nymphs, bathing in a pool. Seeing them he stopped and stared at them. but when Artemis saw him looking at them, she transformed him into a stag. Then, with disgust, she set his own hounds after him. They chased and killed what they thought was another stag, but it was their master.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS #1

What makes a good story?I think what makes a good story is the transformation of a character into something that we know today.Example: When one of Artemis’s nymphs betrayed her vow of chastity, she turned her into a bear then the nymph became a constellation.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION #2

What do these stories tell us about the peoples’ character and nature?I think it shows us that Artemis was very possessive over her animals and that she was really serious about staying a virgin. When you compare us to her you can see that she isn’t girly girl by any means. She was the most independent goddess and that says a lot about her character. She has a wild spirit and does what she wants, when she wants. You don’t want to double cross her or she’ll kill you or turn you into something else and have someone or thing kill you.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION #3

What do these stories tell us about the meaning of life?I think these stories tell us that life can easily be taken from us by one person, and that you should never lie or betray someone because you never know they might seek revenge.
