Candide est sans doute l’une des œuvres les plus ambitieuses de Leonard Bernstein. Le livret est fidèle au célèbre conte de Voltaire et parle de fanatisme, d’intolérance, de guerre, de cupidité, de bêtise humaine.En décembre 2006, cinquante ans après la création de Candide, le Théâtre du Châtelet en proposait une nouvelle production, dans une mise en scène de Robert Carsen avec Lambert Wilson dans les rôles de Voltaire et Pangloss.

canDiDCandid is probably one of Leonard Bernstein’s most ambitious works. The libretto is very close to Voltaire’s famous tale, relating to fanaticism, intolerance, war, cupidity, human stupidity.On December 2006, fifty years after the creation of Candid, the Theatre du Châtelet offered a new production of it, staged by Robert Carsen, and with Lambert Wilson as Voltaire and Pangloss.

Trente ans après un Ring inoubliable au Festival de Bayreuth, et leur Lulu de Berg deux ans plus tard à l’Opéra Garnier, Pierre Boulez et Patrice Chéreau se retrouvaient cet été à Aix-en-Provence pour aborder ensemble, et pour la première fois, une œuvre de Janáek, De la Maison des morts neuvième et dernier opéra du compositeur tchèque écrit en 1927 dont le livret repose sur un roman de Dostoïevski. La Maison des morts raconte le quotidien d’un camp de prisonniers et leur lutte pour conserver un semblant de dignité dans cet univers cruel et violent. Pour raconter cette histoire incroyablement contemporaine, ce camp de prisonniers, ces espoirs, ces vies brisées et quand même cette énergie intacte à vivre et à aimer, l’histoire de ces êtres humains qui restent à toute force des êtres humains dans leur prison. Pour saisir le désespoir et la capacité de survie, Patrice Chéreau a travaillé en étroite collaboration avec le chorégraphe Thierry Thieû Niang – avec lequel il avait déjà monté Cosi fan tutte à Aix en 2005. Dans un décor extrêmement efficace signé Richard Peduzzi, aux couleurs de béton qui se transforme constamment en espace modulable – pour finir en hôpital interminable –, seize acteurs évoluent aux côtés des vingt deux chanteurs de la distribution, dont les remarquables Olaf Bär et Stefan Margita interprètes des rôles de Goryanchikov et de Luka Kuzmich.

The season 2007 kicks off with Die Walküre, the second instalment of the festival’s ambitious new Ring cycle, staged by Stephane Braunschweig with Sir Simon Rattle conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker. The cast includes: Robert Gambil (Siegmund), Mikhail Petrenko (Hunding), Sir Williard White (Wotan), Eva-Maria Westbroek (Sieglinde), Eva Johansson (Brünnhilde), Lilli Paasikivi (Fricka)…The Valkyries, tells how Wotan fails to turn his biological son, Seigmund, into a hero capable of recovering the ring and decides to sacrifice him. In the process, he loses the support of his favourite daughter, the Valkyrie Brünnhilde, who, by disobeying his will, which she herself incarnates, irreversibly weakens his authority.

La bergère Bastienne, abandonnée par son amoureux Bastien, demande aide au présumé magicien Colas, lequel lui conseille de jouer la volage pour regagner son ami. Ruse et divination agissent, le couple se réconcilie et chante les louanges de Colas.Plus qu’une simple captation, le projet d’Anaïs et Olivier Spiro est de réaliser un véritable film d’opéra d’enfants. Dans ce but, ils ont choisi d’ajouter à la mise en scène de Claude Buchvald une trame narrative élaborée autour du personnage d’un jeune garçon.

En 2000, l’Orchestre National de France et le grand chef néerlandais Bernard Haitink ont donné au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées une mémorable version de concert de Pelléas et Mélisande. Sept ans plus tard, la formation retrouve Bernard Haitink dans le chef-d’œuvre de Claude Debussy, dans une mise en scène de Jean-Louis Martinoty. La distribution réunit notamment Magdalena Kožená (Mélisande), les Canadiens Jean-François Lapointe (Pelleas) et Marie-Nicole Lemieux (Geneviève), ainsi que Laurent Naouri (Golaud).

pelleaS anD meliSanDeIntroduction to Maurice Maeterlinck’s play and Arnold Schönberg’s symphonic poem.“Pelleas und Melisande” analyzes a musical masterpiece of the Austrian composer Arnold Schönberg. In order to do this, the plot of Maurice Maeterlinck’s drama is described using pictures painted by artists like Khnopff, Fabry, Lacombes and Munch, who are recognised as representative of the Symbolism, the artistic movement to which Maeterlinck, and partially even Schönberg, belonged. Also pictures painted by Schönberg himself are used to illustrate his musical poem with the intent of plunging the audience into the artistic atmosphere where this music has been created. A quite peculiar way has been used to illustrate the musical themes, the Leitmotive widely used by Schönberg in composing his Pelleas: in the documentary the themes are presented each with a specific colour, which identifies it later on during the concert: every time that a Leimotiv appears in the music a coloured band, specific for this theme according to the documentary, appears on the screen. If two themes are heard together two bands appears etc. By this means the audience can easily recognize the themes and get deep into Schönberg’s way of creating and composing this music. As Schönberg has followed very faithfully Maeterlinck’s drama, during the concert appears on the screen also suitable quotations of Maeterlinck’s text, which enlighten and contextualizes the scene musically depicted by Schönberg.

Chaque année à l’automne, les meilleurs artistes baroques de toute l’Europe ont rendez-vous à Ambronay, magnifique et impressionnant ensemble abbatial du pays de Bresse.En 2006 le festival s’intéressait aux musiques d’Europe centrale et orientale.

La première ballade nous emmène de Prague à Lowicz en Pologne, en passant par Cologne, Postdam et Baden-Baden, retraçant un parcours riche d’escales musicales inédites et audacieuses, avec des compositeurs comme l’allemand Johann Caspar Fischer, les tchèques Georg Benda et Jan Zach ou le polonais Mikolaj Zielenski interprétés par les ensembles Musica Florea, Doulce mémoire, Talens Lyriques ou l’Ensemble William Byrd.

La seconde ballade nous emmène de Prague à Varsovie, en passant par Milan, Salzbourg, Postdam et Baden-Baden, retraçant un parcours riche d’escales musicales inédites et audacieuses, avec des compositeurs comme les allemands Johann Caspar Fischer, Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach et Johan Ernst Eberlin, l’italien Alessandro Orologio, le flamand Philippe de Monte ou le polonais Stanislaw Szarzinski interprétés par les ensembles Musica Florea, Doulce mémoire, l’Ensemble William Byrd et la pianiste Aline Zylberach. Un traitement graphique animé permet de passer avec raffinement d’un extrait musical à un autre.

This series of “Classic Archive” is presented in a new 26-minute format with two additional 43-minute programmes featuring performances by Maria Callas and Victoria de Los Angeles. New artists appear for the first time in “Classic Archive”: cellist Jacqueline du Pré (at age 17), tenor Peter Pears accompanied by no one less than pianist Britten, countertenor Alfred Deller and his son Mark reviving 17th century repertoire, violinist Isaac Stern in a solo recital filmed in Paris in 1965. Apart from Maria Callas in performance, “Classic Archive” pays a special tribute to the legendary soprano on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of her death, with an episode of conversations featuring Luchino Visconti.

En 2006, une nouvelle salle de concert a été ouverte au Théâtre Mariinsky, dans ce qui fut la mémoire de ce lieu historique : l’atelier où décors et costumes des productions passées étaient entreposés. Pour son inauguration, le chef d’orchestre Valery Gergiev propose une rétrospective des grandes oeuvres qui ont résonné dans les murs du théâtre.Avec : l’ouverture de Ruslan et Ludmilla de Glinka, finale de Harold en Italie de Berlioz, l’ouverture de la Force du destin de Verdi, Lohengrin de Wagner, la Polka de Strauss, concerto n°2 pour piano et orchestre de Liszt, Capriccio espagnol de Rimsky-Korsakov Danses polovtsiennes de Borodine, le deuxième mouvement de la Symphonie n°2 de Rachmaninov et final L’oiseau de feu de Stravinsky.

Vide de livres et documents mais pleine de ses tables de lecture, lampes et sièges. Cette salle où d’ordinaire le silence est requis a trouvé un nouvel emploi : accueillir la musique.

This film by Andy Sommer is an introduction to the magical «Accentus world» and is constructed like an «a capella» film musical .The film embraces three different visual settings: for one, the intimacy of Laurence Equilbey’s apartment in Paris, a universe of tranquillity and artistic creation. Then, accentus’s spectacular concert at the mythical «salle Pleyel» and lastly, the film moves through a multi-facetted, imaginary place. Here, the greatest «hits» by Mahler, Prokofiev, Ravel, and Vivaldi have been «revisited» in high-definition creation inspired by films such as Fantasia, Death in venice or Les parapluies de cherbourg.

Vivaldi a donné à l’instrument ses « lettres de noblesse » et composé 27 concertos pour violoncelle plein de variété et de phrasé virtuose.En juin 2006, le violoncelliste français Christophe Coin et l’Ensemble II Giardino Armonico dirigés par Giovanni Antonini enregistraient – en la belle église San Maurizio de Milan – plusieurs concertos pour violoncelle de Vivaldi.

ViValDi cello concertiThe cello had not originally been an instrument for soloists... Vivaldi had given the cello its «letters de noblesse» and composed 27 cello concerti full of variety and virtuoso phrasing. For june 2006, French cellist and conductor Christophe Coin and the ensemble Il Giardino Armonico received will be recording several cello concerti of the composer in Milan’s beautiful San Maurizio Church.

Ce film est le fruit d’un patient travail mené avec la Scala : photos (Erio Piccagliani), croquis de décors, l’opéra lui-même et sa salle, tout a été convoqué pour que surgisse la grande Callas. C’est ainsi que dans ce film, Anna Bolena, La Sonnambula, Don Carlos – autant d’opéras dont il n’existe aucun trace filmée – vont pour la première fois revivre. Résurrection de la vie, de son sens, dés lors que chaque document s’intègre dans une seule histoire. Ainsi cette archive de Maria Callas, bousculée par la foule, qui en 1960 monte les marches du festival de Cannes, sous la forêt des flashes. Elle est celle d’une femme qui cinq semaines plus tôt vient d’enterrer son fils. Un enfant dont elle a accouché dans le plus grand secret, qui est mort huit heures après la naissance. Celle qui se présente glorieuse à Cannes ne sera plus jamais mère. La gloire est le deuil éclatant du bonheur. Plus riche et poignant qu’une fiction, ce roman vrai est le film qui manque sur Maria Callas.

De l’Afrique à l’Asie, José Montalvo et Dominique Hervieu entremêlent la mémoire, l’histoire et la géographie de la danse. Ils dessinent un monde métis qui se dresse comme un rempart à la xénophobie. Ils nous entraînent au Mali, au Cambodge et en Tunisie, où chorégraphes et danseurs sont sollicités pour créer un duo dans un lieu emblématique de leur ville. D’un continent à l’autre, ces performances d’artistes répondent à des évocations poétiques, à un bestiaire fantaisiste et à des contes chorégraphiés. Dans ce film,c’est la place de la danse dans chacune de ces sociétés qui est interrogée.

David Murray est un des derniers héros du jazz, une musique qu’il a portée au plus haut, jusqu’au paroxysme. Au point d’en sentir les limites formelles. Voilà pourquoi ce saxophoniste (sax ténor et clarinette basse) et compositeur américain au fait de sa carrière a choisi de traverser l’Atlantique pour s’installer à Paris au milieu des années 90. En ce sens, il marchait dans les traces d’autres Afro-Américains. Qu’est ce que le jazz ? Une musique en position de recherche esthétique ou un style fixé selon des codes historiques ? Telle est la question, fondatrice et fondamentale, que se pose David Murray, musicien grandi à l’écoute du gospel et du blues, élevé aux sons des avant-gardes et de la soul militante qui est devenu au fil des années l’une des ultimes icônes du jazz. En 1995, il traverse l’Atlantique, pour s’installer à Paris. C’est le début d’une renaissance, au contact d’autres musiques. A travers le monde, il va multiplier les pistes à la recherche des racines et fragments de son identité noire-américaine, afin de reconstituer le puzzle constitutif du jazz des origines, pour régénérer son écriture et la projeter vers d’autres lendemains qui swinguent. De Catane, en Sicile, où il dirige son opéra basé sur la vie de Pouchkine, en Guadeloupe où il improvise avec les meilleurs musiciens de l’île, puis à New York lors d’un enregistrement avec Cassandra Wilson… ce film est la chronique de ce périple spatio-temporel.

A l’occasion de ses vingt ans d’existence, le Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles (CMBV) organisait l’événement culturel et musical majeur de l’automne 2007.

Un voyage dans l’univers de la musique des 17e et 18e siècles en compagnie de l’orchestre des Talens Lyriques dirigé par Christophe Rousset, ainsi que de la soprano Véronique Gens, réunis pour un concert exceptionnel dans la somptueuse Galerie des glaces du Château de Versailles.

La programmation évoque l’univers musical et artistique des Rois Louis XIV, Louis XV et Louis XVI à travers des œuvres de Lully, Rameau et Glück, nous conduisant à la découverte de deux siècles de musique et, à travers elle, des univers et personnages historiques et artistiques qui ont fait Versailles. tHe Bolero paSSionThe film attempts to investigate the mystery of Maurice Ravel’s Boléro, the greatest hit of the classical « repertoire ».It exasperates some and delights others. It is familiar to music-lovers around the world and has inspired a variety of arrangements. The «greatest hit» of the classical repertoire, its most frequently performed piece, ravel’s bolero is surrounded by mystery. Bolero was the result of a rush order from the dancer Ida Rubinstein. Ravel, who usually worked slowly, was forced to resort to a semi-automatic composition system based on the repetition of a single melodic theme. «I am eager to dispel any misunderstanding about this work. The orchestral writing is simple and direct through

the entire length of the piece, without the slightest attempt at virtuosity. I did exactly what i wanted to do, and the audience can take it or leave it.» Ravel’s provocative statement makes the incredible destiny of Bolero even more paradoxical. How a work which is so simple in appearance became the greatest success of the classical music repertoire, hummed by the musically profane, but also admired by the most demanding musical theorists ? Ravel’s character and life will be present in the film, along the numerous subsequent forms in which Boléro has been performed.

Robyn Orlin, chorégraphe sud-africaine, met en scène et chorégraphie l’Allegro, Il Penseroso ed Il Moderato de Haendel à l’opéra Garnier, en Avril 2007. Robyn souhaite intégrer un dispositif filmique dont elle me confie la réalisation.Le documentaire s’appuie sur la création de l’Allegro. La chorégraphe en est le personnage principal. Confronté à sa méthode de travail, je suis au plus près de ses questionnements, intentions et inquiétudes. Je la filme au sein de l’institution, symbole du ballet classique et de la culture occidentale, dans son rapport à la danse et au pouvoir, dans son rapport ambivalent à son pays d’origine, l’Afrique du Sud. C’est au cours de la création que se révèleront ses contradictions, indissociables de la réalité sud-africaine : l’exil et la quête de reconnaissance, la culpabilité et l’engagement.

roBYn orlin, from JoHanneSBUrg to tHe opera garnierRobyn Orlin is a South African choreographer, staging and directing Handel’s Allegro at the Opera Garnier, accompanied by the orchester Les Arts Florissant directed by William Christie in April 2007. Robyn is anxious to include a film unit to this work, anxious to shoot the work in progress and she has asked me to direct it. This documentary is based round the creation of the Allegro. The choreography will in effect be the central character. Confronted to her manner of work, I will be at the heart of her interrogations, her intentions and fears. I will film her in the opera, a symbol of classical ballet and western culture, in her relationship to dance and power, in her ambivalent relationship to her country of origin, South Africa. As she works on this choreography, the contradictions that are inherent to the south African context will appear : exile, quest for identity and recognition, culpability and engagement.

Une explosion de grâce et de virtuosité, dansée ici par le ballet du Théâtre Mariinsky en guise d’adieu à l’année 2006. La grande et admirable Uliana Lopatkina livre une boulversante incarnation de La mort du cygne.

Exils, Transylvania, Latcho drom, Vengo, Gadjo Dilo : les films de Tony Gatlif ont en commun l’invitation à l’errance, voyages toujours accompagnés, guidés par la musique, à la recherche de l’âme du folklore gitan, des Balkans à l’Orient en passant par l’Andalousie. Aujourd’hui, Tony Gatlif prolonge son odyssée cinématographique par un spectacle intitulé Vertiges. « On y retrouve la musique arabe, Soufie, Andalouse et tsigane. Dans cette musique, il y a une idée de transe : quelque chose qui s’élève et qui ne touche plus le sol, mais qui touche l’âme des spectateurs et des musiciens, quelque chose d’incontrôlable ».

Signe de son talent, David Fray est l’un des rares pianistes de la nouvelle génération à avoir été signé en exclusivité par l’une des « majors » actuelles. Il va bientôt enregistrer, pour son deuxième disque, quatre concertos pour clavier et orchestre qui comptent parmi les œuvres les plus stimulantes de Bach. L’un des problèmes majeurs posés à David Fray est que ces œuvres ont été « visitées » par Glenn Gould. Comment dès lors les interpréter sans vouloir copier Gould ni s’en démarquer trop systématiquement ? Le film se propose de suivre David Fray dans sa quête d’une manière toute personnelle d’aborder ces œuvres royales.

DaViD fraY BacH concertoS “(…) David Fray’s sparkling talent is such that he is one of the few pianists of the new generation to have signed an “exclusive” recording contract recently with one of the current “majors”, “Virgin Classics”, following a single triumphantly successful concert given at the Châtelet Theatre in June 2006 in which David Fray replaced, at the last minute and in the same programme, Hélène Grimaud. His first recording has just been released; it is dedicated to the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and Pierre Boulez, a combination that says much of the originality of his repertoire. In January 2008, David Fray will record his second record for Virgin Classics, the programme of which will comprise four concertos for keyboards and orchestra by Bach. For the public these concertos, along with the famous “Brandenburg Concertos”, are among the most popular and stimulating of Bach’s works. The orchestra will be the “Deutsche Kammer Philharmonie Bremen” which David will conduct from the piano.One of the major problems facing the contemporary performer of these works is that they have been “visited” by Glenn Gould; that “rascal Gould, who has made his indelible mark” as David Fray puts it. Leon Fleisher est un des plus grands pianistes contemporains. Privé pendant une grande partie de sa vie de l’usage de sa main droite, les circonstances qui ont fait que ce traumatisme a coupé court à sa brillante carrière et l’ont conduit à devenir un des meilleurs professeurs de piano au monde et l’interprète du répertoire pour la main gauche ont été le sujet d’un précédent documentaire primé de Mark Kidel (Grand Prix Classiques en Image 2002). Aujourd’hui, alors que Leon Fleisher joue de nouveau à deux mains et enregistré deux CD très acclamés, Mark Kidel l’invite à jouer et à parler de quelques uns de ses morceaux préférés devant la caméra. Filmé dans un des magnifiques salons de la Fondation Singer-Polignac à Paris, où Stravinsky, Ravel et d’autres ont joué avant lui, Leon Fleisher interprètera des pièces de Bach, Schubert, Chopin, Ravel et Debussy.

Basé sur des conversations enregistrées et des lettres totalement inédites ainsi qu’un grand nombre d’archives audiovisuelles et des films de famille, il sera structuré autour de recréations dramatiques mettant en scène des comédiens incarnant Toscanini et quelques proches conversant sur des sujets ayant trait à Toscanini lui-même, sa vie d’homme et de musicien.

These conversations – based on unpublished hours of conversations recorded by his grandson during the last years of his life – will be illustrated with Toscanini’s actual home movies filmed from 1932 to 1957, news reels and archival footage as well as NBC concerts 1948-52. Some original filming on location will fill out the visualization of Toscanini’s words.

Darius Milhaud est sans doute l’un des compositeurs les plus féconds du XXe siècle avec une oeuvre importante, qui comporte près de 450 opus et qui l’une des plus originales de la musique française de son temps. Avant d’être reconnues et consacrées, certaines de ses créations ont fait scandale et suscité des controverses passionnées en raison de leur non conformisme et de leur caractère innovant.Il apparut aussi dans les années 1920 comme le figure de proue du «Groupe des six». Sa musique, et plus particulièrement son oeuvre lyrique, exprime ses grandes sources d’inspiration :- son attachement aux racines populaires, celles de sa Provence Natale, mais aussi celles qu’il a adoptées en rencontrant d’autres cultures comme le folklore brésilien ou le jazz.- sa foi religieuse, marquée par la tradition des juifs du Comtat venaissin. - ses convictions humanistes, exprimées à travers son choix de textes et de personnages historiques qui manifestent la volonté de progrès et de liberté pour les êtres humains, comme Christophe Colomb, Maximilien ou Simon Bolivar. Ces lignes de force seront des repères pour aborder dans ce film l’oeuvre et la vie de Darius Milhaud, homme de l’universel et du dialogue entre les cultures. La trame du récit sera constituée par les souvenirs de Madeleine Milhaud et les commentaires de Darius Milhaud lui-même, grâce aux films et enregistrements sonores ainsi que des extraits de ses livres, où il a su relater avec talent son parcours et son travail, notamment dans l’ouvrage qu’il intitule «Ma vie heureuse».

DariUS milHaUD, frencH from proVence, cantor of UniVerSalDarius Milhaud is one of the greatest composers of the 20th Century, the one who made a powerful and original masterwork, with nearly 450 opus, mostly inspired by his attachment to the popular traditions, a faith made of lyricism and tolerance and a passionate struggle for freedom. He made his work with great writers of that time, like Paul Claudel his fellow and friend, Jean Cocteau, Blaise Cendrars, Robert Desnos and Elie Wiesel. He composed on fundamental texts of our mankind, as well as pieces from the Bible, theater plays from Eschyle, as “ Pacem in Terris “, the encyclical Letter by the Pope Jean XXIII. The sceneries and costumes of his operas were achieved by great artists, like Fernand Léger, André Masson or George Braque. With extracts of some operas, cantatas and sacred music, the film will recall the life style and figure of Darius Milhaud, his activities in the places where they happened, in his native Provence and in Paris, in Brazil and in the States where he stayed, near San Francisco. It will also lead us in the towns where his main masterworks were realized, in Paris, Berlin, Rome, Jerusalem and in a few US towns like Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. The film will be accompanied by the narration of Darius Milhaud himself and his wife Madeleine through archive documents and interviews.

« El Sistema « est devenu un réseau d’enfants et d’orchestres de jeunes, de centres de musique et d’ateliers au Venezuela, au sein duquel plus de 250.000 enfants et jeunes apprennent à jouer d’un instrument, et qui devraient être deux fois plus nombreux d’ici 2010. Il fut mis en place il y a plus de trente ans par José Antonio Abreu, qui était motivé par la vision utopique d’un futur meilleur. Dans les cités-taudis de Caracas sinistrées par la pauvreté, Abreu arrache les enfants à la misère grâce à la musique, transformant à la fois les gens et les structures. L’histoire, qui a tous les ingrédients d’un conte de fées, est l’extraordinaire récit d’une vision qui est devenue réalité. Plusieurs des jeunes diplômés du système comptent aujourd’hui parmi les jeunes talents les plus convoités d’Europe - les plus éminents représentants du système étant le chef d’orchestre âgé de 26 ans Gustavo Dudamel et le contrebassiste Edicson Ruiz, qui est devenu à l’âge de 17 ans le plus jeune musicien jamais recruté par le Berliner Philharmoniker. Le film montrera le mode sur lequel fonctionne « El Sistema « sur la base du quotidien dans un noyau typique : le noyau de « La Rinconada «, mitoyen du quartier du même nom, est réputé pour son projet d’intégration des enfants des rues. most prominent being the 26-year-old conductor Gustavo Dudamel and the double bass player Edicson Ruiz, who at the age of 17 became the youngest musician ever to join the Berlin Philharmonic. En 1919, le traité de Versailles mis fin à la première guerre mondiale. Dans la période qui a suivi, beaucoup de Noirs-américains affluèrent vers Paris, convergeant vers Montmartre. Certains étaient des soldats qui avaient combattu en France et décidé de rester. D’autres étaient des musiciens, des amuseurs publics, danseurs ou des patrons de cabarets. Certains d’entre eux y ont connu le succès alors que d’autres ont été oubliés par l’histoire, mais tous ont contribué à cette fascinante épopée du jazz entre l’Amérique et la France. Et c’est ainsi que les Français ont découvert Sidney Bechet, Josephine Baker, Ada « Bricktop » Smith, Louis Armstrong et tant d’autres.Pour raconter cette histoire, nous aurons recours à des « jam sessions », des scènes de musique jazz filmés de manière intimiste, en plans rapprochés sur les visages, les mains et les instruments et des plans de coupe sur les musiciens eux-mêmes, écoutant et répondant à la musique. De grands musiciens d’aujourd’hui joueront des morceaux célèbres de l’époque pendant que des danseurs, apparaissant en silhouette dans le fond de la scène, exécuteront des pas de « swing » et de « tap danse ». Ces « jams sessions » constitueront le point d’ancrage du film tandis qu’une voix off racontera l’histoire de « Harlem à Paris », tout en en explorant les aspects historique et culturels.

Harlem in montmartreIn 1919, the Treaty of Versailles officially ended World War I. In the peacetime that followed, many black Americans flocked to Paris, congregating in Montmartre. Some were soldiers who had fought abroad and decided to stay. Others were musicians, entertainers, dancers and business owners. Some found lasting fame and success, while others were quickly forgotten. All, however, contributed to an incredibly colorful and fascinating period in the history of both France and America. The visual style used to tell this story will include dramatically stylized jam sessions shot in an

intimate way, using precisely framed close-ups of faces, fingers, instruments and cutaways of the musicians themselves listening and responding

to the music. Major artists will play period music in the foreground, while, silhouetted in the background, dancers perform period swing and tap dances. These jam sessions will be the visual anchor for the program. The filmmakers will also use archival performance footage, photographs, and interviews (but no «talking heads») to explore Montmartre and the Paris community that became known as «Harlem in Paris,» and the historical and cultural questions integral to our understanding of the African-American experience in the early twentieth century.

Ce documentaire en deux parties raconte l’histoire de l’opérette comme une histoire « franco-allemande ». Du milieu du XIXe au milieu du XXe siècle, en effet, la France, l’Allemagne et l’Autriche ont développé une culture commune de la « musique légère », dont le centre de gravité se déplace entre Paris et Vienne, à travers les grands noms d’Offenbach, Strauss, Lehar ou Reynaldo Hahn… Ce documentaire souligne la richesse des échanges artistiques, dans une période historique pourtant ponctuée par les conflits et les guerres.

«D’un pas mesuré», telle est l’indication que donne Mahler au début du premier mouvement de sa Cinquième symphonie qui s’ouvre par une marche funèbre monumentale. La fanfare de trompette, qui définit d’emblée le caractère du mouvement, doit être considérée comme un lointain souvenir de l’enfance et de l’époque où l’enfant Mahler entendait de loin les appels de la caserne d’Iglau et assistait aux défilés de la musique militaire devant la maison de ses parents… Maison qu’il fuyait, refusant d’assister davantage aux coups terribles que son père portait à sa mère, jusqu’à l’en faire boiter. Insupportable traumatisme que Mahler finira par évoquer à Freud, avec lequel il aura une unique rencontre, mémorable, qui devait bouleverser sa vie d’homme et de compositeur. Les deux hommes se sont promenés un jour d’août 1910. Une longue ballade… d’un pas mesuré. La promenade psychanalytique dura quatre heures. Nous utiliserons comme fil rouge, la rencontre entre les deux hommes.

maHler’S fiftH SYmpHonY«With measured steps» is the tempo indication Mahler wrote on the score at the beginning of the first movement of his Fifth Symphony, a monumental funeral march. The trumpet fanfare, which defines the movement’s character from the outset, must be viewed as a remote memory of the past, the time when the child Mahler listened to the trumpets of Iglau barracks from afar, and watched military marching bands parade past his parents’ home… But Mahler fled the family home, driven away because he could no longer bear to see the terrible beatings his father gave his mother, which finally made her lame. This trauma was so painful that Mahler finally mentioned it to Freud, with whom he had a memorable encounter, a turning point in his life as a man and as a composer. The two took a walk together one day in August 1910, a long stroll... with measured steps. The psychoanalytic journey lasted four hours. We will be returning to this event again and again as a reference, a journey in the form of a session between two great minds.

Au cours de sa carrière, il a enregistré plus d’une centaine de disques, seul ou en compagnie de quelques-uns des meilleurs musiciens du monde : Sydney Bechet, Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grapelli, Kenny Clarke…A travers une longue conversation avec son ami et contrebassiste François Moutin, Martial Solal évoque les trajectoires de sa vie, son long parcours musical, ses conceptions du jazz dans la composition et dans l’improvisation dont il est devenu un maître, ses rencontres avec les plus grands et la place de son instrument privilégié : le piano. Un film sur Martial Solal aujourd’hui, ce sont aussi des documents d’archives sur Alger, sur le Paris de l’âge d’or de Saint-Germain-des-Prés, sur la conquête des États-Unis. Sverrir Gudjonsson est l’un des plus grands contre-ténors de notre temps. Son répertoire s’étend des chants médiévaux islandais à la musique contemporaine européenne et internationale. Stomu Yamashta est un musicien de renom. Héritier d’une longue lignée d’artistes de Kyoto, il a choisi de faire chanter les pierres et les rochers. Il a enregistré plusieurs CD et donné de nombreux concert-événements. Stomu Yamashta et Sverrir Gudjonsson sont amis et complices. Stomu Yamashta est venu plusieurs fois en Islande pour participer à des création de Sverrir Gudjonsson. Lors de sa tournée en décembre 2005 dans 15 villes du Japon, les deux artistes se sont longuement rencontrés à Kyoto et ont discuté d’un nouveau projet à créer qui permettra à leurs deux sensibilités de se rencontrer. Le film nous révèlera cette amitié artistique et l’élaboration du projet musical spécialement conçu pour ce film où se rencontre les sons minéraux de Stomu Yamashta et la voix unique de Sverrir Gudjonsson.

Boreal anD Stellar mUSicSverrir Gudjonsson is one of the greatest counter-tenors of our times. His repertoire covers his country’s old mediaeval scores as well as the new European and international works of contemporary music. Stomu Yamashta is a renowned musician. Descended from a long line of great Kyoto artists, stomu Yamashta has chosen to make stones and rocks sing. He has recorded several cds and given a huge number of concerts, which are unique, baroque installations Stomu Yamashta and Sverrir aere friend and accomplices. Stomu Yamashta has been to Iceland to take part in Sverrir’s premieres. During Sverrir Gudjonsson’s tour of 15 japanese cities in december 2005, the two artists spent a lot of time together in Kyoto and discussed creating a new projet that would permit their sensibilities to meet. The aim of this film is to give us an insight into this artistic friendship. The two artists will create a musical project especially for our film in which Stomu Yamashta’s mineral sounds will encounter Sverrir Gudjonsson’s unique voice.

Construit à la manière d’un road-movie, ce nouveau documentaire de Bruno Monsaingeon nous emmène dans un périple en train de à travers la Pologne et jusqu’à Budapest, en compagnie de Piotr Anderszewski, selon un itinéraire imposé par son calendrier de concerts. Le train est son lieu de répétitions et de travail, le lieu où il reçoit ses amis venus lui rendre visite, mais aussi un lieu de réflexion sur sa carrière. Le film s’attache à retracer les événements les plus importants de son actualité professionelle, comme l’enregistrement d’un nouveau disque ou ses derniers récitals à Paris et Tokyo. Enfin, ce film sera l’occasion d’une réflexion profonde sur son activité de musicien et son rapport à son art. Ce thème reviendra comme un leitmotiv à intervalles réguliers tout au long du film.

piotr anDerSZeWSKi - iS tHere a piano on BoarD?Structured as a road-movie from Warsaw to Budapest in a special train car with the famous Polish-Hungarian pianist, Piotr Anderszewski, this new film by Bruno Monsaingeon will capture the most important events of the pianist’s current activities: a new CD recording, a master-class, excerpts of recitals in Warsaw, Budapest, Paris, Tokyo. Following this, we will reach the deeper exploration – the major question Anderszewski puts to himself and which is linked to what a musician’s role ideally holds for him. This theme will recur as a leitmotiv at regular intervals throughout the film.

La seule chose dont on soit sûr à propos de Serge Prokofiev est qu’il a été un musicien de génie, l’un des plus grands compositeurs du vingtième siècle. Tout le reste, de sa musique à sa vie privée, reste une énigme. Avec la découverte de ses journaux intimes, un pan du mystère Prokofiev se lève. Peu après la Révolution Bolchévique, le compositeur fuit la Russie. Pendant les dix huit années qui suivent, il essaye de se construire une carrière en Amérique du Nord et en Europe. En 1936, il prend une décision qui étonne tout le monde : il retourne en Russie, au moment où les purges staliniennes sont à leur apogée. Plus de cinquante ans après sa mort, en s’appuyant sur l’accès à des matériaux jusqu’alors jamais utilisés, et en particulier son journal intime, ce film révèlera les faces cachées de l’histoire sur la période charnière des dix-huit années (1918-1936) passées hors de Russie.

With the discovery of his personal diaries, the mystery that was Prokofiev is about to be revealed. Prokofiev fled Russia shortly after the Bolshevik Revolution. He spent the next eighteen years trying to build a successful career in North America and Europe. Then, he made a decision which stunned the world: he returned to Russia in 1936, at the height of the Stalinist purges. Now more than fifty years after his death, an hour long documentary, Prokofiev : The Unfinished Diary reveals the largely untold story about the pivotal eighteen years (1918-1936) outside Russia, the years which sealed his fate. Through the intimate, revealing and often heartbreaking words of Prokofiev’s diaries, the film investigates Prokofiev’s life and art through his own words and the prism of some of his most extraordinary musical creations.

Ce documentaire montre la rencontre de Sylvie Guillem avec Robert Lepage et les suit pas à pas pendant deux ans. Il rend compte également du goût de l’artiste pour l’Asie, son esthétique, une manière de vivre et de penser qui influencent, en partie, ses décisions artistiques actuelles et sa vie personnelle.Depuis 2003, celle qui est la plus grande des étoiles si elle continue de danser au sommet, aborde aussi la comédie et même se met à chanter, avec un désir, un plaisir percutants, face à Russell Maliphant, à Akram Khan, deux nouveaux talents de la scène chorégraphique anglaise. Et en ce moment même avec Robert Lepage.Il y a un phénomène Guillem, unique dans le monde de la danse.

Avec Orphée et Eurydice, Pina Bausch annonce un « opéra dansé ». Les caractères principaux - Orphée, Eurydice, Amour – sont des voix. Mais ce sont aussi des corps qui dansent. Ainsi l’a voulu Pina Bausch : des personnages dédoublés, comme déchirés entre leur « moi chantant » et leur « moi dansant ». Dans son œuvre lyrique, Gluck avait accordé à Orphée le pouvoir de vaincre les Ténèbres par la seule force de sa musique et la sincérité de sa douleur. La vision de Pina Bausch ne contredit pas Gluck ; elle la prolonge : elle est plus sombre. Si la danse, fluide, dévoile des corps qui aiment, elle suggère surtout la vulnérabilité de la condition humaine.

orpHeUS anD eUrYDicePina Bausch has invented dual roles, representing Orpheus, Eurydice and Love not only by the dancers, but also by singers on stage who form an integral part of the action. Orpheus, the myth goes, equals the gods with his song and music. Bausch’s Orpheus and Eurydice seemed unearthly in its beauty, attaining a rare and harmonious blend of music, choreography and dance which left the spectator with a feeling of peace and a belief in the possibilities of human nature.
