VISITPEEL.COM.AU MANDURAH CITY ART TRAIL Stained Glass Window Artist: Cottage Leadlighting (1998) The Wagyl, or Rainbow Serpent, controls the balance of water, guards the sacred landscapes and is shown surrounded by Mandurah’s aquatic flora and fauna. 1 Bonu-Wongie - Message Stick Artist: John Kelly & Coral Lowry (2006) Two hands holding a message stick represents the invitation from the Winjan Aboriginal Community to the City of Mandurah to work together. 3 Mosaic the Wall Artist: Carol Nicolson (2006) Commissioned for Crab Fest 2006, this series of small mosaics represents what can be seen and bought in this popular shopping precinct. 5 You’ve Got Mail Artist: Claire Bailey (2000) In 1887 telegraph lines reached Mandurah and reduced the isolation of early settlers for whom The Post & Telegraph Office was an important meeting centre. 7 Snakes and Ladders Artist: Lesley King & Dudley Park & Riverside Primary Schools & community (1999) Step onto a mosaic of the Snakes and Ladders games with playing instructions on hand-made tiles surrounding the installation. 2 Himvanta Artist: Pornchal & Th’awan (2014) The Himvanta forest of the Himalayas is inhabited by beautiful Kinnaree. These half-bird halfwoman are renowned for their singing and dancing. 4 Arty Bike Rack Artist: Gary Aitken (2014) This sculpture is also a functioning public bike rack with cyclists invited to contribute by securing their bike to the decorative wheels. 6 The Drover’s Dog Artist: Claire Bailey (Date Unknown) This work represents one of many drover’s dogs that would have been left outside the inn while their owners quenched their thirst inside. 9 Swimming in the Shade of Days Gone By Artist: Jahne Rees & Rob McCulloch (2013) Elevated on jarrah poles, the aluminium canopy reflects the movement of water and marine life and casts interesting shadows on the pavement below. 11 The Fisherman Artist: Mary Knott (1998) This fisherman has real character and was created to acknowledge the beginning of the canned fishing industry along the estuary in the 1880s. 13 War Memorial Artist: Hames Sharley Design (2005) A place of reflection and tribute to the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Inspired by the poem, ‘At the Going Down of the Sun’. 15 abc Artist: Anne Neil (1999) Based on a line drawing of books and pencils, this cast work commemorates the opening of Mandurah’s first government school in 1900. 8 Lady Bananas Artist: Lady Bananas & Ladie Poise & Pore (2014/15) This series of contemporary urban murals wrap round the building to form a colourful, engaging and eye catching modern artwork. 10 The Three Vessels of Hope Artist: Claire Bailey (1998) These bronze works on recycled jetty pylons evoke the idea of life’s journey and the challenges it presents to all of us. 12 Bindjareb Fishing Site Artist: Sandra Hill & Jenny Dawson (1999) This work highlights the cultural significance of the waterways for trading and fishing for the local Bindjareb Clan and others of the Bibbulmun Nation. 14 Photographs and text by Andrea Schell.
