Our last two gallery shows featured novel approaches. The Construction show challenged the idea of using 3-D space with art that is traditionally 2-D, and this led to some very interesting creations. The fired arts show was not on pedestals. Instead it was hanging in space and on the walls. The gallery committee, headed by

All of our members will be receiving a ballot for our four open seats on the board of directors. The ballots need to be returned by Thursday, May 31 and the results will be announced at the annual Membership Meeting at 5:00 pm on June 7, 2018. I would like to thank everyone

We are working on the leaks in the gallery and the pottery room and hopefully the problems will be solved by the time you are reading this. Just like any old “house” there is always something to repair or maintain on our building.

Have a wonderful summer, and maybe treat yourself to a new class in the nice cool art center.

by Jan Walker Chinese artists have been using the ‘Chinese brush’ on absorbent, hand-made papers for millennia. Chinese painting began with the art of calligraphy, which was regarded as the highest art of China. What’s so special about this brush? First, each brush is made from all natural fibers—as are many Western watercolor brushes—using hairs from animals like sheep, weasels, horses, and even rat whiskers. Chinese brushes, unlike their Western counterparts, are constructed by hand in layers of fibers, floating in tubs of water. This was fascinating to watch when I was a student in Taiwan. Most have long hairs around a core of slightly shorter, stiffer hair. All parts of the brush are used, not just the tip, to create the textures we see in nature. This is perhaps the heart of Chinese painting technique. Which leads us to the premier difference between Chinese ‘brush’ painting and Western art. The brush is considered the instrument of the ‘heart’—each stroke a direct expression of a unique and very personal spontaneity. The ideal is to let the ink or color flow with the heart, or intuitively. The brush stroke is everything, more than correct form or proportion or color. Techniques are learned by observing the work of ancient masters, one’s own teacher, and nature…and of course, practice.
