Introduction:

An elemental factor in Idiots Paradise is its double plot.

This characteristic marks the film in the narrative level, as

well as in the visual and sound level, and that is the basein which the art proposal of this work is articulated.

Each plot will be marked by the main characters own

identity features in each context, which will be visually

emphasized by the use of certain codes and symbols.

The art direction proposal in this film seeks todifferentiate both plots and the characters in them, using

chromatic, atmospheric, spatial and costume contrasts,

with the purpose of generating visual codes to facilitate

the spectators understanding about the two plots in the

narrative universe.

On the other hand, in this film there is a realistic esthetic,

based on objects and locations which reflect the day-to-

day and that are part of a common imaginary, based on

the socio-cultural context of our city, Santiago.

Color:

The color will be an essential factor within the

film, because it will serve, on one hand, to es-tablish continuity and to potentiate the iden-

tity of both spaces and characters, and, on the

other hand, to notoriously differentiate both

plots.

Based on the above, the color gains a fun-

damental relevancy in the locations and thecharacters costumes.

Each plot characterizes for its own particular

color pallet, which is applied in the art design

of each location.

In the plot where Martin wins the grant, and in

order to reinforce the idea of nonconformity

in his life, the color pallet contains earth colors

like: brown, beige, cream, varieties of green

(dark green and moss green) and grayish blue,

which correspond to tones mostly unsaturat-

ed to mark the emotional tenor of the plot.

Color.

During the film development, the color pallet

in the nonconformity plot will be getting dark-er; this will be reflected in Martins apartment,

transforming the atmosphere of the place into

a lugubrious and shadowy one. This change

responds to the emotional progression of the

character, reflecting his state of dissatisfac-

tion and loss of balance.

Locations and atmosphere:

The locations, in general, vary according to the direction

the story takes, ithat is to say, with Martin who gets the

research grant, and Martin who doesnt.

This is how the atmospheres differentiate from each

other accordingly to the narrative sense of each one and

with a distinctive end between them.

In the plot where Martin gets the grant,there are locations like:

Locations and atmosphere.

The Forest:Its the place where the main character develops his investigation in

search for the indigenous. Its a magical land, filled with vegetation and

millenary trees; its a space of great natural majesty in which the main

character feels diminished. Once Martin starts to face his expectations,

with a reality far from the one he dreamed, he will get to a part of the for-

est that is cut and corroded.

Emilias beach house:Its rustic and humble, with pottery collected by her parents; it borders

the kitsch. Emilia goes to live there after knowing that Martin will have to

go south, copying the dispossession spirit. Its in this isolated place where

the two of them start to idealize a relationship that doesnt have much

time left.

Martins apartment:

When Martin returns to his apartment, it shows how some elements fromthe beginning of the film have remained the same. Those elements reflect

the time passing and the unconcern. The view shows some dry plants, fur-

niture with dust or covered with sheets, and the entire atmosphere within

the space is darker and more lugubrious than in the beginning.

In the plot where Martin doesnt get the

grant, there are locations like:

Ofces/cubicles:Its Martins workplace. Square walls divide and isolate the people work-

ing in that place. Its visualized as a small, enclosed and oppressive place.

The gray color and square shape are predominant. Its the beginning of

very important changes in the main characters expectations.

Emilias apartment:It has a minimalist decoration, a lot of geometry and rigid elements. The

color pallet covers white, black and gray tones. This time Emilia stays in

Santiago and her rigidness acts as reinforcement for a Martin consumed

by the circumstances.

Martins apartment:Its a space that stands by its emptiness. The view shows some furniture

covered with sheets, half painted white walls and a lot of closed packing

boxes as a reflect of the main characters unconcern and the passive way

in which he starts to live.

In the lm there are some common loca-

tions to both plots where central topicsare proposed, leading us to reect about

dilemmas that give narrative order to themain topic of the lm. Some of those loca-

tions are:

Bar/coffee shop:Its a more neutral place, of enlightened tones and with a lot of daily activ-

ity. Its a common place of encounter where, in more than one occasion,

both universes (both plots) will be closer to each other. Here there is a va-

riety of different people, looking to be a place that humanely represents

the imaginary that the film expresses, starting from its premises.
