This week we are

going to take

inspiration from Ian

Macarthur, a

freelance artist who is

based in London. His

work is mainly

monochrome (black

and white) and is often

based on studies of

animals which he then

makes more stylised

(less realistic) with

lines and patterns

Some examples

of Ian

Macarthur’s

work

ART & DESIGN - Y8 – STYLISED ANIMALS

Task 1 (10 mins) – on your A4

piece of paper draw an

outline of an animal’s head

shape (choose one from the

next page …or you could

enlarge and print one out if

you want to)

Use a pencil first to draw

your outline

Try to make it fill quite a bit

of the A4 paper

Add a few details into it once

you have the basic shape

(eyes etc)

Getting started…

Draw an outline of one of

the animal ‘heads’ shown

on the next slide – in pencil

for now until you are happy

with it

ART & DESIGN - Y8 – STYLISED ANIMALS

Choose an animal head…

Choose ONE animal to work

with today and make your basic

outline drawing in pencil

Task 2 (50mins) – now start

working with your PEN

(preferably a black biro or a

fineliner) to STYLISE your animal

head:

Split it into SECTIONS if you can

Use Ian Macarthur’s ideas as

INSPIRATION

Add PATTERNS and LINES to it

in a similar way to your zentangle

work last week

Make some of your lines THICK

and some THIN

You could also BLOCK some

areas in too

ART & DESIGN - Y8 – STYLISED ANIMALS Pattern Inspiration …

Look at the different patterns Ian

Macarthur uses in his work …can

you steal some elements to use in

your animal head?

Look at the way he angles the

patterns going AROUND the faces

of his animals – this will help them

look more 3D too!

ART & DESIGN - Y8 – STYLISED ANIMALS

If you haven’t got time right

now to finish your animal

piece then come back to it

later …you can add more into

it whenever you want to!

Other things you might want

to consider with your animal

piece:

Adding some thinner line

work and even more detail or

tonal work with a biro

Adding some areas of colour

if you want to

My stylised animal piece

(rhino) fully finished

(I might still add more

though!!)

Completing your

stylised animal…

ART & DESIGN - YEAR 8 We hope you enjoyed making your stylised animal

piece today …..I would really like you to send me a

photo of your animal head if possible (this is

optional – but I’d like to add them to the montage

of artwork I am putting together)

Make sure you take the photo from directly over

your animal drawing and that it’s a clear photo

Send in your photo to

[email protected]

Also – make sure you keep all of your pieces of

artwork together in a safe place as we will be making

them into a sketchbook later!
