This week we are going to take

inspiration from a type of artwork

called ‘Zentangle’. The work

‘zentangle’ is a combination of

‘zen’ (meditation) and ‘tangle’

(meaning to mix up or entwine)

The style of zentangle artwork

usually features black linear

(line) outlines of patterns and

doodles

Zentangle artwork can contain

anything you want in it – but it is

usually abstract (not realistic)

and also complex (lots of detail)

Some examples of

zentangle artwork

Task 1 (5 mins) – on your A4

piece of paper make a scribble

of some sort with your pen (or

in pencil first if you want to

plan it more)

Your scribbled lines should

make different shapes on your

paper – so try to make your

scribble out of one continuous

line

This doesn’t need to fill the

whole of theA4 paper – see my

example on the right

Getting started…

Create a ‘scribble’ using

one continuous line if

possible – to create

different shapes that we will

work into later

Task 2 (50mins) – Working

with a black pen (either a

biro or a fineliner or felt tip)

start to make your

zentangle piece now:

Add different

patterns/lines into each

section of your scribble

outline

For pattern ideas – see

the next slide for some

inspiration if you are

stuck

Start working in each

section of your scribble

with a different pattern or

doodle!

ART & DESIGN - Y8 – ZENTANGLE ARTWORKPattern Inspiration …

You can make up your own

patterns – but if you are

stuck then have a look at

some of these for

inspiration or look for more

online

Try to build your patterns gradually – start with a

simple pattern and then draw more detail into it,

adding more detail each time like I did in the

example above

If you haven’t got time right

now to finish your zentangle

piece then come back to it

later …you can doodle into it

whenever you want to!

Other things you might want

to consider with your

zentangle:

Adding some thinner line

work and even more detail

into each section

Adding some areas of

colour if you want to

of your zentangle piece at some point over half

term when you have finished it (this is optional –

but I’d like to make a montage of lots of them

together to share with you all later)

Make sure you take the photo from directly over

your zentangle and that it’s a clear photo

Send in your photo to

[email protected]

Also – make sure you keep all of your pieces ofartwork together in a safe

place as we will be making them into a sketchbook later!
