ART AND SPEED

The Documentation of an Event
- “Sharing” via a network becomes inherent to an experience.- Networked imagery leads to decentralization and decontextualization- Intended meaning is lost the further an image moves through a network

Fighting for Attention
- In a world of overabundance of information facilitated by the internet, an image’s value is determined by how memetic it is.- The “infinite scroll” flattens images and pits them against one another for your attention.

Instantaneous Broadcast
- While the distribution isn’t inherently different from previous technology, the time between creation and its availability to be viewed and shared has collapsed.- Ideas and aesthetics cycle quicker and more people can participate in a conversation instantaneously.

Opt-in or Opt-Out
- What does it mean to make work within this context?- Art that equally addresses these issues (Art that talks about itself)- Hyper-awareness within the network

Art as Images
- Through the distribution of art via aggregators and image feeds (FB, CAD, Tumblr) along with hi-resolution cameras and screen displays, the “perfect” image of a work trumps the physicality and “aura” of a work.- For many artists, how a work functions online is equally, and sometimes more important than how it functions IRL

- Talk abt my work: Chinese WiFi, Jogging, Netorked Sculpture- The internet, but more so Google, Apple, Microsoft etc as an “architecture”- Just as there are considerations with space when showing a work, there are considerations for distributing work online- Show example of Gucci album cover
