Dear Member,

South Africa is a geographically spectacular, economically vibrant, and socially complex country. Join fellow museum members as we travel through this magnificent country on a one-of-a-kind program designed especially for the Art Institute of Chicago. Our trip begins in Cape Town, South Africa’s fourth-largest city. Enriched by Dutch, British, and Cape Malay influences, the cosmopolitan atmosphere is a unique blend of cultures. Enjoy private meetings, gallery visits, and wonderful excursions to the area around Cape Town, including the Cape Winelands and Cape Penninsula. Tour Robben Island—also known as Seal Island—a World Heritage Site and one of South Africa’s most revered national monuments. Enjoy two days of game viewing and camp activities at Kruger National Park, including game drives in open safari vehicles and bush walks alongside a trained guide, to explore the area’s wildlife. Our program ends in Johannesburg with a visit Constitution Hill, Soweto (South Western Township), and a visit to the Apartheid Museum. Visits to artist studios and prominent galleries complete this art-filled itinerary. Accompanying us will be visual artist and popular Art Institute study leader Regina Mamou.

We hope you will join us!

Sincerely,

Aleksandra Matic Associate Director of Member Travel

Sunday, April 23—Arrival in Cape Town, South Africa

Upon arrival in Cape Town, your Cox & Kings local representative welcomes you and accompanies you to the Cape Grace Hotel—standard afternoon hotel check-in time applies. The refashioned Cape Grace Hotel is situated in the iconic center of Cape Town’s Victoria & Alfred Waterfront on its own quay. Cape Town’s most popular shopping and tourist attractions are all within walking distance.

Cape Town, internationally known for the beauty of Table Mountain, is called the Mother City of South Africa, the site of the first European landings and settlement in the country. The interplay of sea and mountain characterizing the Cape of Good Hope moved explorer Sir Francis Drake to deem it “the fairest Cape in all the circumference of the globe.”

Cape Grace: Luxury Rooms

Monday, April 24—Cape Town

Depart from Cape Town’s Victoria & Alfred Waterfront by ferry for a 25-minute trip across Table Bay to Robben Island—also known as Seal Island. This World Heritage Site is South Africa’s most revered national monument, and was once a longstanding prison.

Among its more famous inmates are 19th-century tribal chief Makana, who lost his life attempting to escape by boat across the bay, and South Africa’s first democratically elected

president, Nelson Mandela. Mandela spent two decades of his life on the island, along with some 3,000 other political detainees, many of whom were icons of the resistance and went on to serve as leaders in the new South Africa. This stirring tour is led by experienced guides, many of whom were once inmates, and includes a visit to the prison block and the limestone quarry as well as a drive around the island, featuring breathtaking views across the bay.

Enjoy lunch at the Café Paradiso before visiting South Africa’s oldest museum, Iziko South African Museum, and examining the museum’s exceptional South African rock art gallery, accompanied by the curator.

Continue next door to the Iziko South African National Gallery, the country’s premier art museum, housing outstanding collections of South African and African art.

Meet with artist Juliana Irene Smith. Smith has worked as an interdiscipliniary artist for over ten years, serving as the co-founder of ALMA MARTHA, an artists’ collective that pushes notions of the contemporary, of collaboration, and the

Depart for a full-day tour of the Cape Winelands, including a visit to Franschhoek in the “Valley of the Huguenots,” where the French first settled in 1688. Here, visit the EBONY/Curated art collection, curated by Marc Stanes. Stanes sources classic and contemporary works by some of the most recognized South African artists, including Gordon Vorster, Cecil Skotnes, Peter Clarke, Carl Bucher, Olaf Bisschoff, Ndikhumbbule Ngqinambe, Sibusiso Duma, and many others.

Continue to the Gallery at Grande Provence, one of the most highly regarded galleries in the Cape that showcases some of South Africa’s finest artists, ranging from established talents like Angus Taylor, Lionel Smit, and Leon Vermeulen to emerging young artists such as Phillemon Hlungwani, Jacki McInnes, and Nico Masemolo.

Enjoy lunch at Delaire Graff Estate, followed by a tour of the private art collection. Laurence Graff—an avid collector of modern and contemporary art, a world leader within the diamond industry, and a devoted philanthropist—opened the estate to the public in 2009.

Visit TOKARA for a wine tasting and exploration of the establishment’s private collection. TOKARA is the embodiment of owner GT Ferreira’s philosophy that good wine, good food, and good art go together to make a good lifestyle. The art is curated by Julia Meintjes, an authority on historical and contemporary South African art.

In Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in South Africa, visit the new Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden. Lewis is widely recognized as one of the world’s foremost sculptors of the animal form and has exhibited extensively across the globe and in South Africa. For 12 years, Lewis focused especially on the large cats of Africa before turning his attention to the human figure.

Return to your hotel in Cape Town. Following a lecture at the hotel, the remainder of the evening is at your leisure.

Thursday, April 27—Cape Town

Depart after an early breakfast for Table Mountain’s Aerial Cableway Lower Station and experience a five-minute revolving cable-car ride to the top. The Irma Stern Museum, administered by the University of Cape Town, comprises a permanent collection of the art and artifacts Smith acquired during her travels. Travel to Woodstock and enjoy lunch at Burrata in Cape Town’s Old Biscuit Mill.

Visit artist Liza Grobler, whose work explores the tangible qualities of materials and the connections between people, artwork, and the world around us. Before returning to your hotel, enjoy a final stop at the Blank Projects. Tuesday, May 2—Johannesburg

Take a closer look at South Africa’s turbulent past with a drive through Soweto and a visit to the Apartheid Museum, regarded as the preeminent museum on 20th century South Africa. The museum delves into the history of South Africa, examining apartheid right up to the nation’s first democratic elections in 1994.

Continue to Soweto, a sprawling residential area that has grown into a “city within a city,” home to approximately

two million residents. Your guide follows a route that takes you past the major points of interest, including the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Baragwanath Taxi Rank, Regina Mundi church, Hector Pieterson Memorial, and Nelson Mandela’s former home.

Wednesday, May 3—Depart Johannesburg

Visit the Constitution Hill precinct, bordered by the inner city neighborhoods of Braamfontein and Hillbrow, where South Africa’s new Constitutional Court opened in March 2004. The new court building was established on the site of the Johannesburg Fort, a fortress built in 1898 that was converted to one of the country’s most notorious prisons, known as “Number Four.” Explore the museum that has been established in the old prison, bringing home the significance of this development and what it means for the future of Johannesburg.

Enjoy a visit to the Goodman Gallery, one of South Africa’s longest-standing international contemporary art galleries. The gallery showcases artists who strive to shift perspectives and engender social transformation. Founded during the era of apartheid, Goodman Gallery offered an open and non-discriminatory space when museums served the agenda of an autocratic government.

Return to your hotel where the afternoon is at your leisure until you are accompanied to the airport to board your flight. Hotel checkout is at 5:00pm.
