Art Adventures is a great way for young artists to have their first Museum experiences – with a grown-up by their side – before coming to art classes on their own. Joslyn Members: $8 adult/child pair per session, $1 each additional child General Public: $10 adult/child pair per session, $2 each additional child Instructor: Therese Straseski www.joslyn.org | (402) 342-3300 | 2200 Dodge St. | Omaha, NE JUNE 2 DRIP PAINTINGS: The famous American painter Jackson Pollock will show us how to create with moving energy! We’ll look at one of Pollock’s drip paintings in the gallery then drip, drop, and drizzle paint to create action paintings. Meets in the Masterson Classroom. 9 ART DECO DESIGN: We’ll take a look at a special collection of Art Deco jewelry designs to identify shapes, investigate patterns, and talk about how artists create balance. In the studio, we’ll combine colorful shapes to create an Art Deco collage. Meets in the Masterson Classroom. 16 STICK SCULPTURES: Sculptor Deborah Butterfield often assembles sticks and driftwood to create horse forms, which are then cast in bronze. We’ll look at one of these horse sculptures before constructing an animal of our own using sticks attached to a piece of board. Meets on the Strauss Bridge. 23 CUT CAMEOS: This week we will shine a light on our young artists to create cut paper silhouettes that resemble the fashionable cameos that we’ll visit in a special exhibition of French jewelry. Meets in the Storz Fountain Court. 30 MIXING COLOR: A curious trio of kittens will guide us as we experiment with color mixing. We’ll look at illustrations in the galleries from the classic Little Golden book The Color Kittens to get ideas for the colorful paintings we will create in the studio. Meets on the Strauss Bridge. JULY 7 BUG SCULPTURES: For a time, it was all the rage to wear bugs in your hair! We’ll look at examples of Art Nouveau jewelry to find dragonflies, grasshoppers, and other critters before returning to the studio to create bugs of our own from golden modeling clay. Meets on the Strauss Bridge. JULY (continued) 14 RELIEF SCULPTURE: Put your imagination to work to create a shimmering dragon or other fanciful beast. We’ll cook up some ideas while we look for imaginary animals hiding in bracelets, necklaces, and other examples of French jewelry. In the studio, we’ll use special tools to create three-dimensional drawings on a piece of shiny metal. Meets on the Strauss Bridge. 21 PATTERN: Beautiful stained glass windows found in the Museum’s Founder’s Room will provide us with the inspiration to create colorful designs full of radiant pattern that will glow when hung in sunlight. Meets in the Masterson Classroom. 28 GLITTERY PENDANTS: A special collection of glittery gems and opalescent stones will get us thinking like French jewelers in order to create shimmering button designs in the studio. Meets on the Strauss Bridge. AUGUST 4 PORTRAIT PAINTINGS: Joslyn’s prized portrait by the Dutch master Rembrandt will provide a framework for us to create self- portraits in the studio. Meets in the Masterson Classroom. 11 ART NOUVEAU: We’ll spend time in a special exhibtion looking at French fashion trends to find designs with stylish flowers, vines, and leaves. In the studio, we’ll use an oily gold crayon to create drawings of flowers that we will complete with paint. Meets in the Masterson Classroom. 18 PRINTMAKING: Create a printing plate by assembling different shapes and patterns to produce pictures with inspiration from the carefully planned jewelry designs that we will see in the galleries. Meets in the Masterson Classroom. 25 BLOT PRINTS: Learn a unique way to create pictures that smooshes wet ink to create squiggly images. We’ll look at illustrations from Little Golden books, made in a similar way, before smooshing images of our own in the studio. Meets in the Masterson Classroom.
