Origami: Japanese Paper Folding
Origami is the Japanese art of folding paper into objects without cutting or pasting. The word origami comes from the Japanese terms ori (folded) and kami (paper). For the Art Museum's 2012 summer KidsArt programming -- designed in conjunction with our exhibition Kimono: Art, Fashion and Society -- the story of Sadako was read aloud, the children toured the Kimono exhibition and then learned the art and significance of folding origami, specifically cranes. Origami cranes symbolize good luck and legend states that folding one thousand cranes will lead to a long life filled with good fortune. The October 25th workshop will focus on folding cranes and other objects. Photographs from the summer exhibition and workshops will be available to review.

Drawing Rediscovered: New
Insights into Drawing for Thinking
After decades when traditional drawing skills were neglected under
Modernism, artists are returning to the drawing board. At the same time,
scientists are discovering what Renaissance artists always knew: that drawing is the ultimate tool of the mind.
Based on recent research on ways drawing fosters critical, creative, and reflective thinking in art and across
disciplines, this presentation encourages more comprehensive
approaches to teaching drawing in art education. It also reports on a
movement to establish “graphicacy,” thinking through images, as a
complement to literacy and numeracy at the core of education. In the
process, I will discuss my drawing practice and how it informs my
teaching in art and art education.

Oil Wash Technique
Participants learn the subtractive and additive technique using oil washes.
Using both acrylic and oils, they learn how to respond to under painting using
a minimal palette. The warm colors are applied with acrylic paint that seals
the board so the oil paint does not soak into the surface. Next,
participants apply cool dark colors with oil washes. Letting the oil wash dry,
the participants then pull out highlights using a kneaded eraser. This reveals the warm acrylic colors underneath.
To build darker values the oil wash is repeated several times.

Things I learn along the way: About the concept of the teacher/artist:
During this presentation, MacArthur will share personal images and discuss their origins and aesthetic dimensions. MacArthur will address the advantages
of being an artist/teacher: • inspiring students by practicing your
craft • seeking professional development—not only pedagogy, but opportunities to
develop your artistic skills and understanding. The hope is that
attendees leave with a better sense of the criticality of the inter-connectivity of the attributes of teacher and artist as
well as an understanding and appreciation of MacArthur’s personal
artwork.

Observational Drawing Workshop: It’s more than meets
the eye!
Popular instructional methods like Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain
make observational drawing easier than ever, and seemingly simple to explain: just draw what you see, like
taking a photograph. But, observational drawing is really much more than that, a matter of thinking,
feeling, and engaging a range of sensory apparatus along with the eye.
In this workshop, participants will explore a range of old and new
observational drawing techniques to consider their strengths and limitations
for teaching various ages and to understand how different teaching
methods inform seeing and thinking. Along with art, we will consider how
observational drawing supports learning in academic areas like natural
science.
