New York Times Columnist Says Middle East Unrest Due To Global Warming?Wednesday 02-09-2011 8:34pm MT
Excerpts From "Droughts, Floods and Food"
NY Times
Paul Krugman
Read The Entire Piece HERE!
"The consequences of this food crisis go far beyond economics. After all, the big question about uprisings
against corrupt and oppressive regimes in the Middle East isnt so much why theyre happening as why theyre
happening now. And theres little question that sky-high food prices have been an important trigger for popular rage.
So whats behind the price spike? American right-wingers (and the Chinese) blame easy-money policies at the
Federal Reserve, with at least one commentator declaring that there is blood on Bernankes hands. Meanwhile,
President Nicolas Sarkozy of France blames spec ulators, accusing them ofextortion and pillaging.
But the evidence tells a different, much more ominous story. While several factors have contributed to soaringfood prices, what really stands out is the extent to which severe weather events have disrupted agricultural
production. And these severe weather events are exactly the kind of thing we d expect to see as rising
concentrations of greenhouse gases change our climate which means that the current food price surge may
be just the beginning."
"The usual suspects will, of course, go wild over suggestions that global warming has something to do with the
food crisis; those who insist that Ben Bernanke has blood on his hands tend to be more or less the same people
who insist that the scientific consensus on climate reflects a vast leftist conspiracy."

No joke: Ex-mayor's name, Harry Baals, too funny for Indana centerWednesday 02-09-2011 5:04pm MT
Associated Press
FORT WAYNE, Ind. A former Indiana mayor who won four terms in the 1930s and 1950s is proving less popular with
modern-day city leaders, who say they probably won't name a new government center for him because of the jokes
his moniker could inspire.
Harry Baals is the runaway favorite in online voting to name the new building in Fort Wayne, about 120 miles
northeast of Indianapolis. But Deputy Mayor Beth Malloy said that probably won't be enough to put the name of the
city's longest-tenured mayor on the center.
The issue is pronunciation. The former mayor pronounced his last name "balls." His descendants have since
changed it to "bales."
Supporters said it's unfair that the former mayor can't be recognized simply because his name makes some people
snicker. But opponents fear that naming the center after Baals would make Fort Wayne the target of late-night
television jokes.
"We realize that while Harry Baals was a respected mayor, not everyone outside of Fort Wayne will know that," Malloy
said Tuesday in a statement to The Associated Press. "We wanted to pick something that would reflect our pride in
our community beyond the boundaries of Fort Wayne."

LOUISVILLE, KY. -- A Fairdale man faces charges after Louisville Metro Corrections officers said they discovered

According to the arrest report, officers asked Antoine Banks if he had any drugs, weapons or contraband on him as he
entered Metro Corrections after his arrest. He told them he didnt, police said.
During a clothed pat-down, officers said they found a small bag of suspected cocaine tied to the waistband of Banks
boxers.
After that bag was found, a strip search was ordered, according to the arrest report. During the strip search, another

Obama Quits Smoking....No word if he will quit his addiction on Government SpendingTuesday 02-08-2011 7:42pm MT

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama has finally done what millions of fellow Americans are still struggling to
achieve - he's given up smoking.
"Yes, he has," his wife, Michelle, said Tuesday at the White House when asked whether he had conquered a nicotine

habit that began as a teenager.
"It's been almost a year," she said, offering no details on exactly when or how he quit.
Butis the breakup with tobacco final?
One in five adults, about 46 million people, still smoke, and brain research shows that nicotine is powerfully addictive.
Three out of four smokers who try to kick the habit relapse within six months, and repeated attempts often are
required to quit long term, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
Obama, who has one of the world's most stressful jobs, has walked this tobacco road before. He announced in
February 2008, during his presidential campa ign, that he was quitting smok ing - again.
