AWArdSrose Hodgson Volunteer of the Year

This award, created by Softball Canada in 2008, recognizes the life and contributions of Rose Hodgson. Rose, who passed away in 2007 after serving nine years as an active Softball Canada Board member, contributed selflessly to the betterment of softball at the local, provincial and national levels. In her over 35 years as a volunteer, she always put players first and supported any initiative that gave them the opportunity to play and reach their dreams.

Nominees for the award can be volunteers from any level of the game. They will have supported the experiences of players through any number of contributions (outside of coaching and officiating where awards already exist). The theme of their nomination will be that they have tirelessly committed themselves to the game. They may have created or improved softball opportunities in their area, or simply added to the enjoyment of the game for those involved in the sport.

A letter of application, including references, supporting material and a letter of endorsement from the re¬spective Provincial/Territorial Softball Association must be received at the Softball Canada office by September 15.

The successful candidate will be selected from within the region hosting the Annual Meeting that year. The pres-entation of the award will be made at the annual Softball Canada Congress.

feAtUred WortH BALLThe Worth 11” and 12” Gray Dots are the Official Softballs of Softball Canada’s Canadian Slo-Pitch Championships.

The 11” ball is used in the women’s game, while the men use the 12” ball. The 12” ball has a coefficient of restitution (COR) of 0.40, while the 11” ball has a COR of 0.44, which are both less lively than the 0.47 Fastpitch balls. The 0.44 COR increases the safety of the Slo-Pitch game, giving defensive players more time to react to hard-hit balls.

Join the best of the best for the 2013 Blue Convention Junior Development Workshop at the Hamilton Crowne Plaza Hotel and Conference Center in Hamilton, Ontario on Saturday, March 30th, 2013 from 9 am to 4pm.

We have an excellent team ready to instruct which includes Tonya Ribalkin Zanon, Frankie Billingsley, and Sal Gara, all Softball Canada Level V officials with a wealth of National and International experience. And we are extremely pleased to announce that Bob Stanton, the Director of Umpires of the International Softball Federation, will be joining us as well.

Cost: $50.00

Topics being considered:

1. Rules Knowledge: How it will help you out of situations

2. Presentation on Misunderstood Rules

3. Basic Mechanics and Positioning

4. Dealing with the Pressures of Umpiring

5. Setting and Achieving your Goals

This exciting clinic is being put on to give the youth umpire (ages 14 - 18) some of the basic tools to be successful on the diamond. These topics cover essential elements that a great umpiring career may be built upon.

As mentioned above, our instructors include Bob Stanton from New Brunswick, who is currently the Director of Umpires of the International Softball Federation and a former National Director of Umpires for Softball Canada. Bob’s wealth of knowledge and experience is boundless. Tonya Ribalkin Zanon is a Level V official from Alberta who has officiated and supervised several Canadian championships. Tonya is ISF certified and recently officiated at the 2011 Junior Women’s World Championship in Cape Town, South Africa. As an incentive for all you aspiring young officials, Tonya started umpir-ing at the age of 13! We’re also pleased to have Frankie Billingsley on the crew. Frankie, also from Alberta, is a Level V official who has officiated at several Canadian Championships. Representing Ontario, we have Sal Gara, a Level V official who is also ISF certified and a veteran of several Canadian Championships. Sal is one of the Fast Pitch Deputy Umpires-in-Chief for Ontario and one of his responsibilities is the Junior Development program.

This workshop will have both lecture and practical components and will no doubt be inspiring for those in at-tendance. The cost is only $50.00 and the Blue Convention Host Committee will be providing a lunch for all those in attendance. And of special interest to all aspiring Ontario Junior Development officials, you will be offered the opportunity of receiving credit for your 2013 Softball Ontario JD Intermediate clinic through a discounted “Take Home Exam” option. It will be priced at $25 and will only be available to Workshop participants.

So don’t delay as only a limited number of spots are available. Now is the time to register for the clinic! Be the first in your association to sign up for this once in a lifetime opportunity and come and learn from some of Canada’s top instructors.

LeArn to pLAY – SoftBALL peI

Softball PEI continues to try and grow our numbers with the Learn to Play program. This year West Royalty Girls Softball Association created a Mini-Mites (age 5-8) program that saw girls and boys participate. At the start of the season each player was given a t-shirt to keep. Each week they learned softball skills and played a game. They used the Learn to

Play principles and coaches witnessed each player gain skill and confidence while learning softball skills.

The Association held a Year-End Wrap-Up Day, which saw all the players participate in various activities. Teams played four inning games. A problem they encountered with the young players was running to first and stopping at the base instead of running through the bag. The coaches decided to

set up the Blast Base about ten feet past first base to encourage the player to run through the base and hit the Blast Base. It worked so well that another blast base was set up at Home plate so each player had the fun of “announcing” their run. Once the activities ended, each player received a medal, a certificate and a team photo. The day ended with a Pizza Party and other treats, cupcakes and cookies provided by the parents.

We held a Mites Fun Day where the players played a couple four inning games with an umpire officiating in full dress. Not only were the players excited about having a “real” umpire, but our umpires assigned to officiate had a lot of fun as well. The event host held skills and Softball PEI set up stations for pitching, hitting and throwing. A Pizza Party followed with each player receiving a medal and there were draws for door prizes.

Softball PEI believes that continuing these programs that put the emphasis on “fun” while learning softball skills will continue to grow the sport.
