Arnie the Old Apple
Tree
By Russell Layfield
Once there was an old apple tree called Arnie.
He was sad.
He had no friends
except the children.
It was spring and Arnie grew beautiful
green leaves.
The children passed by.
“Hello, old tree. Are you warm, warm, warm today?”
"Yes," said
Arnie.
It was summer and the sun shone, shone,
shone.
The children passed by.
“Hello, old tree. Are you hot, hot, hot today?”
"Yes," said
Arnie.
It was autumn and Arnie’s leaves all
fell to the ground.
“Hello, old tree.
Are you cool, cool, cool today?”
"Yes," said Arnie.
It was winter and
the wind blew.
The children passed by.
“Hello, old tree.
Are you cold, cold, cold today?”
"Yes," said Arnie.
One day some
workmen came.
“No, no, no! Don’t cut the old tree down,” shouted the
children.
But the workmen didn’t cut the old tree down.
“Look, more trees,” said one of the children.
The workmen planted some new trees around
Arnie.
It was spring
again.
“Hello, Arnie. Hello, new trees.”
“Are you warm, warm, warm,
today?”
"Yes, we are warm and happy," said Arnie.
"Look at all my
new little friends."
