Joe Alberici enters his 14th season at thehelmoftheArmylacrosseprogramin2019.Fol-lowing in the footstepsof someof thebiggestnamesinthehistoryofthesport,Albericiroamsthe same sidelinewhereHall of Fame legendssuchasJackEmmer,AceAdams,DickEdellandF.MorrisTouchstoneoncetread. A former assistant to Emmer, Alberici re-turned to the banks of theHudsonRiver afteranine-year stint as anassistant coachatDukewhere he helped the Blue Devils tighten theirgripasoneofthenation’spremierlacrossepro-grams. Albericibecamethe10thheadcoachinAr-my’sstoriedhistoryin2006,andwastaskedtofillthebigshoesleftbyhismentor,Emmer,whoretiredascollege lacrosse’sall-timewinningestcoachin2005. Alberici led Army to its first-ever PatriotLeague tournament title in 2010, defeatingNavy, 11-8, in the championship contest. TheBlack Knights, who compiled a 6-0 conferencerecord during the regular season for the firsttimethatspring,wentontoupsetNo.2-rankedSyracuseinthefirstroundoftheNCAAtourna-ment.AlbericihelpedmoldGarrettThul‘13intothenationalRookieof theYear in 2010as theattackmansetpleberecordsingoalsandpoints.ThuljoinedJeremyBoltus‘11-Army’smostre-centfirst teamAll-American-and2013PatriotLeagueOffensivePlayeroftheYearJohnGlesen-erasthreeofAlberici’smostprizedrecruitsasoflate. When it comes to Alberici producing suc-cessful cadet-athletes both on the field and inthe classroom, the numbers speak for them-selves. In 14 years at theAcademy,his playershave earned a total of 31 All-American certif-icates. Alberici has also mentored 10 PatriotLeaguemajorawardwinners(PlayeroftheYear,DefensivePlayeroftheYear,GoalkeeperoftheYear,RookieoftheYear,FaceoffSpecialistoftheYear),103PatriotLeagueHonorRollrecipients,sixAcademicAll-Americans,fourPatriotLeagueScholar-Athletes of the Year and two SeniorCLASS Awardwinners (Brendan Buckley, 2013;AndrewMaisano,2010). Inaddition,15ofhisplayershavebeense-lectedintheMajorLeagueLacrossedraft. The Black Knights started strong in 2018withwinsoverUMassand#10/11Rutgers.Armyfought to a three overtime deficit to #14/16Syracuse a weekend later. Johnny Surdick wasnamedathirdteamAll-American. Alberici and the Black Knights continuedtheirsuccessinleagueplayin2017withanothervisittothePatriotLeaguetitlegame.Armywasthe only team in league history to make all 13 PatriotLeagueTournamentsemifinalrounds. TheBlackKnightshadtheirbestseasonun-derAlbericiwith a 12-4 recordoverall in 2017andfinished14th in thenational rankings.The12winsbyArmytied for themost inacademyhistory and was the third straight year the Black Knightshadreacheddouble-digitvictorieswithAlbericiatthehelm.ArmymadeittothePatriotLeagueChampionshipforthethirdconsecutiveseason. He tutored the Faceoff Specialist oftheYearinDanGrabherandhadatotaloffourAll-PatriotLeagueFirstTeamselections.GrabherwasalsovotedontotheUSILAScholarAll-Amer-icaTeam. Alberici led the Black Knights to another10-win season in 2016, which was the thirdtime in his Army career he had reached dou-ble-digit wins. The Black Knights reached thePatriotLeaguechampionshipgameforthesec-ondstraightyearafterdominatingNavyina9-3win,holdingtheMidstotheirlowestgoaltotalin the series since1947.He tutored threefirstteam All-Patriot League performers and twosecondteamers.AustinSchultzwashonoredforhis work in the classroom as he was named the Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Scholar-AthleteoftheYear.SchultzandJimboMoorewerebothselectedasUSILAScholarAll-Americansaswell. In2015,theBlackKnightsmadeanincredi-bleruntothechampionshipgamewitha12-11win in thefinal seconds at Loyola in thePatri-ot LeagueQuarterfinals. ArmyWest Pointwasdownfivewith lessthan12minutesremainingandpulledoffthewin.TheBlackKnightswenton to knock off top-seeded Navy on its homefield to reach the title game against Colgate.
ArmyWest Point reached 10wins for the sec-ondtimeunderAlbericiandsawGlesener,SamSomers and Austin Schultz garner All-AmericahonorsfromtheUSILA.Somerswasnamedthe2015PatriotLeagueGoalkeeperoftheYearafterleadingtheconferenceingoalsagainstaverage.TheBlackKnightsalsoput19playersonthePa-triot League Honor Roll Abigreasonfortheoverallrecordof9-5in2014wasthedefensivesideofthefieldastheBlack Knights were the top-ranked defensiveunitin2014,allowing7.21goalspergame.Armyfaced three ranked teams during 2014 and allthreegamesweredecidedbyonegoal,includinggames on the road against No. 2 Loyola and No. 5NotreDame.TheBlackKnightsdefeatedNavyfor the sixth straight year aswell. AlbericiwasnamedPatriotLeagueCoachof theYear,whileGlesener and Somerswerefirst teamAll-Patri-ot LeagueandvotedasAll-America selections.Twelve players were selected to the PatriotLeagueAcademicHonorRollaswell.Inadditiontothepostseasonhonors,PatHartplayedintheNorth/SouthGameattheendoftheseason. AshehasdoneeveryseasonatWestPoint,Alberici engineered a Patriot League Tourna-ment berth for his Black Knights,whofinishedtheyearwithan8-6mark.Armyfacedfivena-tionally ranked teamsanddefeatedNavy for afifthstraighttimein2013.WhileThulshatteredArmy’sgoal-scoringrecordinhisfinalseason,theFlemington,N.J.,nativealsopickedupAll-Amer-icahonorsforathirdtime.Glesenerandfellowsenior Brendan Buckley were also named. With Buckley anchoring, the Black Knights rankedthird in the nation in scoring defense, yielding7.79 goals per game, at year’s end. Alberici’semphasis on molding the true student-athletewasnevermoreevidentthanin2013.Tenplay-ers earned Patriot League Academic Honor Roll plaudits,whileBuckleyproduceda laundry listof postseason academic and athletic awardsto include Patriot League Defensive Player ofYear, USILA Academic All-America, Capital OneOverall AcademicAll-Americanof the Year, Pa-triotLeagueScholar-AthleteoftheYearandthe2013SeniorCLASSAward.ThankstotherecentsuccessofBuckley,Alberici hasnowmentoredfourofthePatriotLeague’slastfiveScholar-Ath-leteoftheYearwinners.InadditiontoBuckley’ssuccess, Thul became the third lacrosse playertowintheprestigiousArmyAthleticAssociationTrophy,awardedannuallytothetopgraduatingmaleandfemaleathletes.DraftedbytheHam-iltonNationalsoftheMLL,Thulalsoembarkedon his rookie NLL season with the Philadelphia Wingsin2013-14. Army showed improvement from a 7-8showing during a 2012 campaign that saw the BlackKnightsfacesevennationallyrankedoppo-nentsandreachNo.20themselves.Army’s6-5overtimewinatthen-No.15BucknellhaltedtheBison’seight-gamewinstreak.WhilethevictoryinLewisburg,Pa.,providedplentyofhighlights,the apex of Army’s season came courtesy of a9-6winoverrivalNavyonnationaltelevisiontoclinch aPatriot LeagueTournamentberth. FiveBlack Knights garnered All-Patriot League hon-ors, including senior Adam Fullerton `08, whowon his second straight conference Goalkeep-er of the Year awardonhisway to third-teamAll-America honors. Ranked as high as No. 8duringtheseason,ArmyfinishedtheseasonNo.19 in the final USILANational Coaches Poll ontheheelsofascoringdefensethatonlyallowed7.13goalspergame,toranksixthnationally. In 2007, Alberici guided the Black Knightsthrougha roller coaster season,highlightedbya6-1startandanupsetofNo.2SyracuseintheCarrierDomethatmarkedthefirsttimetheOr-angehadeverlostathomeinFebruary.RankedashighasNo.8inthenationalpollsduringthecampaign, the Black Knights would go on toqualify for their third-straight Patriot LeagueTournament to finish the season. His stalwartdefense allowed just four opponents to scoreover 10 goals en route to a 7.80 goals againstaveragethatranked10thinthecountry.Albericialsowatchedfourofhisplayersgarnerall-con-ferencehonors. In his first season as head coach, Albericiled the Black Knights to their second straightappearance in the Patriot League TournamentChampionship game. Two of his players - at-tackmanJohnWalker`06anddefensemanMattLuyster `06 - capped their Army careers withHonorable Mention All-America honors whileleading the squad to its ninth-straight seasonwith at least eight victories against one of thetoughest schedules in the country. Alberici’stenureatDukecoincidedwiththeBlueDevils’risetonationalprominence,whichculminated in theirmagical run to theDivisionItitlecontestin2005,agameinwhichtheyfell9-8totop-rankedJohnsHopkins.Rankedsecondin thenationbehindtheBlue Jays formuchofthespring,Dukeforgedaremarkable17-3 led-gerandestablishedanNCAArecordforvictoriesin a single season. Two of Duke’s losses wereone-goaldefeatsatthehandsofJohnsHopkins,includingan11-10double-overtimelossatJHU’sHomewood Field in early April. Alberici’sdutiesatDukeincludedrecruitingdirector, assistingwith thedaily administrationof theprogram, servingas theBlueDevils’de-fensive coordinator and coaching the team’sgoalkeepers. After serving as offensive coordinator andworkingwithDuke’sman-upoffenseduringhisfirsteightyears,heassumedtherolesofdefen-sivecoordinatorandcoachoftheman-downde-fenseduringhisfinalseason.Hewaspromoted
to associate head coach in 1999.DuringAlberici’snineyearsonheadcoachMikePressler’sstaff,theBlueDevilsforgedasparkling96-47 (.671) record, made seven appearancesin the NCAA Tournament - including a run ofsix-straightpostseasontripsbetween1997and2002-andcapturedapairofAtlanticCoastCon-ferencetitles(2001and2002). The Blue Devils reached the Final Four forthe first time in 1997, Alberici’s initial year inDurham,beforeembarkingontheirremarkablepostseasonrunin2005.UnderAlberici’swatch-ful eye, Duke ranked second in the nation inscoringdefense,surrenderingjust6.91goalspergame. Albericispentthe1995and1996seasonsatWestPointasanassistantcoach,andhelpedtheBlackKnightstoa10-5showingandanNCAAap-pearancein1996.Armywonitsfinalfivegamesthat season, including victories over Hofstra,NavyandRutgers, toearn theAcademy’s12thpostseasonberth. A1991graduateofAlfredUniversity,Alberi-ciwasatwo-timelacrosseAll-Americanin1990and1991andalsogarneredAcademicAll-Amer-icaaccoladesasasenior.A four-yearstarteratattack,hesetsixschoolscoringrecordsandledtheSaxonstowinningseasonsin1989,1990and1991. A three-timeteamcaptain,Alberici led theentirenation,includingallthreedivisions,inas-sistsasajunior,garnering78helpersin17con-testsfora4.6assistper-gameaverage.In2001,AlbericiwasinductedintoAlfred’sHallofFame.Following graduation, Alberici remained at hisalmamaterfortwoyearsintheroleofgraduateassistant coach, earninghismaster’s degree ineducationin1993. Heacceptedhisfirstheadcoachingassign-ment soon thereafter when he was named tothe top post at SUNY Oneonta. In 1994, theDragonsforgedan8-6recordandestablishedasingle-season school record for victories, earn-ingAlbericiEmpireLacrosseLeagueCoachoftheYearlaurels.Itwasontheheelsofthatspectac-ularseasonthatAlbericimadethemovetoWestPoint. AnativeofAuburn,N.Y.,Albericiwasinduct-edintotheAuburnHighSchoolHallofFamein2008, joininghisbrothers,JohnandJason,andtheir father, Gino, as enshrinees. In his pres-entroleasthefaceofArmy’sstoriedprogram,Alberici hasassumedcontrolof a club that re-mainsintertwinedwiththerichhistoryofcolle-giate lacrosse. In 101 seasons, the Black Knights haveamassed786victories, trailingonly JohnsHop-kins, SyracuseandNavy inall-timewinsat theDivisionIlevel.Armyhasproducedeightnation-alchampions,while12menassociatedwiththeprogram (eight players and four coaches) havebeenenshrined in theNational LacrosseFoun-dationHallofFame.
