Yerevan is the capital and largest city of Armenia and one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. Situated along the Hrazdan River, Yerevan is the administrative, cultural, and industrial center of the country. It has been the capital since 1918, the thirteenth in the history of Armenia, and the seventh located in or around the Ararat plain. Yerevan was named the 2012 World Book Capital by UNESCO. Yerevan is an associate member of Eurocities. The Cascade, a giant stairway in Yerevan, links the downtown Kentron area of Yerevan with the Monument neighborhood

After seven years of renovation the Cascade – a former Soviet monument in the center of Yerevan - has been completely transformed into one of the world’s outstanding contemporary art centersCafesjian Sculpture Garden is located at the base of the Cascade and presents one of the finest collections of monumental sculpture found anywhere in the world. Its unobstructed walkways, long vistas, and formal garden areas have been specially designed to provide a modern setting for large-scale sculpture by such internationally recognized figures as Fernando Botero, Lynn Chadwick, Jaume Plensa, and Barry Flanagan. Once you get to this favorite promenade venue, you will immediately be exposed to modern art, will plunge into the atmosphere of culture without as much as entering the galleries.

The Sculpture Park is a small green zone in the immediate North of The Opera. Sculptures from Botero and other artists of international fame decorate the Park. The park itself is part of Cafesjian Museum - the Armenian version of Guggenheim. The main part of the museum is in the Cascades - an Art Deco version of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon stretching nearly the height of the Empire State Building. It's a massive white stairway up a hillside of central Yerevan, decorated with green stretches, fountains and waterfalls. Higher level of the Cascades give a spectacular view of Mount Ararat and panorama of central Yerevan with it's hilariously multi-colour roofs.

Second level of Cascade. On each level works of eminent sculptors are situated. David Breuer-Weil, The Visitor and François-Xavier Lalanne Carpe (Très Grande)

The first floor and the bookstore of the museum as well as the indoor escalators to the top of the Cascades are free of charge.

Well-known for its open-air concerts and fireworks the Cascade is the best place for relaxing

The Cascade is located in the very beginning of the street bearing the name of Architect Tamanian. At the Cascade foot there is the monument to Tamanian bending over his general plan.

Yerevan map by Tamanyan

Tamanian created the first general plan of the modern city of Yerevan which was approved in 1924. Tamanian's style was instrumental in transforming what was essentially a small provincial city into the modern Armenian capital, a major industrial and cultural center. Neoclassicism dominated his designs but Tamanian also implemented a national flavor (red linings of tuff, traditional decorative carvings on stone etc.). Among his most famous designs in Yerevan are the Opera and Ballet house, the Republic Square (1926–1941) and others.
