ARMADALE PRIMARY SCHOOL Newsletter No. 6 8 March 2018
Dear Armadale Community Thank you for attending the two nights of family interviews and hoping you found them useful as an opportunity to share information with your child’s class teacher. We are currently reviewing our Reporting policy and opportunities to share information with parents about their child’s growth and development on a more frequent basis and what that might look like. Photo Day Today was our school photo day and we were incredibly lucky with the weather. The children should receive all their photo packages in a few weeks. Essential items payments that are owed to the school Thank you to the families who have paid these. We now have 220 children to date and I hope that the rest of these can be finalised over the next few weeks. Please log into Compass to make your payments. Don’t miss out on this fabulous Fundraiser for our school. Book your tickets now!! Monash, in Love and War - An evening fundraiser for our community Thursday May 3rd at Chapel off Chapel Don’t forget this wonderful opportunity to have a night of theatre and entertainment at Chapel Off Chapel,. The theatre has been booked exclusively for Armadale Primary School so log onto Trybooking at https://www.trybooking.com/355130. It should be a great night! Gastro in schools Despite our best intentions to ensure children wash their hands and cover their mouths when sneezing or coughing it is
very tricky to contain viruses such as gastroenteritis. When your child / children exhibit signs of a sore tummy; fever and if this is accompanied by vomiting or diarrhoea please do not send them to school until all symptoms have disappeared. Could all parents please ensure that when the school rings to advise you of a sick child that someone can come, collect them, and take them home. Monday 12th March is a Public Holiday Just a reminder to our community that our school will be closed on Monday as it is a public holiday and the children are required back at school on Tuesday 13th March. Long Service Leave I am taking long service from Monday 19th March until the end of the holidays, travelling to Spain and Portugal to celebrate a milestone birthday with my husband, John. Now, as a long-term cancer survivor, every birthday is significant especially when at an early age the threads of life were fragile and threatened. In my absence, Connie will be our Acting Principal and Peter Cracknell, our Acting Assistant Principal. Connie and I will be out next Thursday and Friday at the Principals’ Conference and Christine and Peter will join us on Friday as part of our Leadership team. As Wednesday, next week will be my last day at school for the term I wish you all a happy Easter and wonderful term break and look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday 17th April.

Being outside at lunchtime for 60 minutes
can, at times, be a long time for our
children.
Sitting in the car whilst driving to a holiday
destination can seem like an eternity for
both the parent and child.
As parents and teachers, we are all too
familiar with the phrase, ‘I’m bored.’ We
immediately think we need to save our
children from this terrible thing called
boredom. Tools such as books, various
screens and carrying out some odd jobs are
often suggested as ways to cure the
symptoms. After school can be a crammed
with various lessons – swimming, ballet,
music, Robotics.
We would agree that we want to nurture
self-reliant individuals who can take
initiatives and think for themselves. But
filling a child’s time for them teaches
nothing but dependence on external
stimulus, whether material possessions or
entertainment. Providing nurturing
conditions and trusting children’s natural
inclination to engage their minds is far
more likely to produce independent,
competent children, full of ideas.
Sporting, musical and other organised
activities can certainly benefit a child’s
physical, cognitive, cultural and social
development. But children also need time
to themselves – to switch off from the
bombardment of the outside world, to
daydream, pursue their own thoughts and
occupations, and discover personal
interests and gifts.
Qualities such as curiosity, perseverance,
playfulness, interest and confidence allow
them to explore, create and develop
powers of inventiveness, observation and
concentration. These also help them to
learn not to be deterred if something
doesn’t work the first time, and try again.
By encouraging the development of such
capacities, we can offer children something
of lifelong value.
Learning to stand back can be one of the
most difficult things for us to do because
we want to, naturally, ensure our children
are happy. I still remember turning my
mother’s formal lounge room into a huge
cubby house using the bed sheets. I
remember the fun we had, the laughter
and the collaboration needed to create. I
was only 7.
Don’t underestimate the power of
boredom.

The Arts
Performing Arts 3/4C were enthralled by student Rachel’s lyrical playing of a Chinese flute. Listening to other students perform is a great way to assist in developing empathy. For example, Leah (who played the keyboard) was asked how she felt performing in front of her class. She responded that she “felt nervous to begin but then felt good”. Well done 3/4C for being such a kind and respectful audience!
Harmony Day If your child plays an instrument from around the world and would like to perform during the Harmony Day assembly on Wednesday 21 March, could they please see either myself of Vita. Years 3-6: The classes have begun to explore and appreciate the extraordinary art of the Indonesian Wayang Puppet Theatre (shadow puppets). The shadow puppets plays are accompanied by the sounds of the Gamelan orchestra.
In groups, the students read a script of a Balinese folktale, about Kancil the deer and Cecik the Gecko. They began to add different sound effects with body percussion, tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments to dramatise their plays. Learning to work together, collaborate and make a group decision can be challenging. Drama provides students with the opportunity to develop these very important skills where it is necessary to listen to different opinions and make compromises.
Visual Arts
Year 1’s: Experimenting with primary colours and different tool enabled the students to ask lots of questions and make some great discoveries this week!
Helpers required Would any parents have time to record the chemicals stored in the art room? Schools are mandated by the Department of Education to keep an OHS record of all their materials on site. If you can help please email me [email protected] Your help would be greatly appreciated! Senior Singing Group S.S.G.: Please note: There is a rehearsal on Tuesday 13 March after the long weekend! Ivy Graham kindly designed the cover sheets for the SSG. Please bring along your folder to receive a copy at our next rehearsal. There are only 2 more rehearsals before we perform on Harmony Day, on Wednesday 21 March! Rosanna 3/4C and Pippa
Harmony Day Years Prep - 2 Cultural background activity What is my cultural background? Students will explore the idea of their cultural identity during Italian lessons, in the lead up to Harmony Day. We would like you to talk to your child about their cultural background or identity. Some possible discussion points could be-
The family's country or countries of origin.
When did grandparents,
(parents, students, or other family members) emigrate to Australia?
What languages does the
family speak?
Artefacts that represent your child's cultural background. Students are invited to bring to school one artefact to share with their class during their Italian lesson. The artefact could be clothing, a photo, book, map, picture, or other object. (If you have valuable or precious items, please have your child bring in a photo instead of the actual item). Students will be encouraged to talk about the artefact and photograph it. Grazie Vita Vampatella Italian Language Co-ordinator

It’s Easter time again (already!!!) So we’re gearing up for Hot Cross Bun orders and our ever popular Easter Hampers! Hot Cross Buns
Phillippa’s hot cross buns were a huge hit last year, so we will be taking orders through them again while raising funds for the school! Price to our families is $15.50. Phillippa’s RRP is $18.00. So you’ll save $2.50 per box and be raising $6.00 per box for the school Orders must be received by 10am Wednesday 14th March. Collection will be from the quadrangle/stage area on Friday 23rd March between 2.30pm & 3.45pm. Our preferred payment method is via TryBooking to streamline our accounting processes. Just follow the link and place your order https://www.trybooking.com/UPVC. Alternatively you can pay by cash
by filling out your order form and placing it in an envelope with your cash in the box in the office. See attached flyer/order form for further information. We will also be sending an order form home with your child tomorrow. Easter Hampers & Very Special Kids
Each year, every class decorates a cardboard box in an Easter theme. We collect donated Easter eggs from our generous families, and turn the boxes into beautiful hampers. Then 13 (of the 16 classes) Easter Hampers are donated to Very Special Kids in Armadale. Very Special Kids cares for children with life-threatening conditions by providing a children’s hospice and professional family support services. The kids love decorating the boxes and knowing that our school is making a difference to these children’s lives and bringing a smile to their faces. We will be delivering boxes to the classrooms early next week. Decoration of the boxes needs to be finalised by Friday 23rd March. The decorated boxes will then be judged, and the top 3 winning boxes will be chosen by Mrs Cukier, with the class of the winning box to receive a prize. From there, the boxes will be turned into hampers filled with lots of Easter goodness. The top 3 hampers will be raffled off and given to the winners at the final assembly on Thursday 29th March. The remaining 13
boxes will be delivered to VSK during the last week of term. How our families can help. 1. When you are shopping this week,
please purchase Easter eggs and/or something Eastery to be included in the hampers. There will be boxes in the office for your items, and donations need to be received by Friday 23rd March.

On Friday, Lucie and Bill helped to dig the compost and organic matter into the garden beds at the front of the school. There was lots of yummy organic matter for the worms to eat. There were also some things that worms can’t eat such as - juice boxes, disposable coffee cups and lids, plastic drink bottles, plastic wrappers, bread, vegetable scraps in biodegradable bags. Some information from the Stonnington website: http://www.stonnington.vic.gov.au/Live/Waste/Other-Waste-and-Recycling-Opportunities/Composting-and-worm-farming.
The average Stonnington garbage bin contains 50% of food waste.
When food scraps and other organic materials are sent to landfill, they begin to rot anaerobically (without oxygen) and release greenhouse gases, primarily methane (CH4), which contributes to climate change. Many people don’t realise that the impact of methane on climate change is around 25 times greater than carbon dioxide (CO2). By composting your food scraps instead of sending them to landfill, households can significantly reduce their environmental footprint.
Here is a list from the City Of Stonnington web site detailing what you can include in your compost or worm farm.

Captains’ Corner Hi everyone! Well done to everyone who participated in the house swimming sports and the districts swimming sports. Hope you all had fun and did your best! Thanks to the PFA for the wonderful recent family picnic. The year 5/6’s students had a debating workshop on Monday to make a growth mindset towards public speaking and communication. Followed by another year 5/6‘s writing workshop “Convince Me.” to teach kids how to write persuasively. The year 3/4’s will also participate in the workshop. The students will participate in a 90 minute writing workshop. They will be guided through the writing process by Beth Cregan whereby persuasive language and techniques will be explored and evaluated. There will be a school tour held on the 14th of March. Just a reminder, on Monday 12th of March there is Labour day public holiday so no one goes to school that day!
