ArmacellDuct LinersFiber-Free Solutions for Healthy, Energy-Effi cient, Sustainable & Quiet Air Delivery Systems

Sometimes you have to think

inside the box.

When it comes to safe, quiet, cost-effective air delivery systems, it’s what’s inside the duct that counts. That’s where insulation is the most effective, as a preventive measure against energy waste, fi bers, mold, distracting HVAC noise – and unnecessary material and labor costs.

Properly insulated ducts help reduce or eliminate problems that can interfere with high performance outcomes.

Many still think the only solution is fi berglass insulation, despite its inherent problems: It needs to be wrapped outside the duct in most applications, which provides minimal acoustical value and is highly vulnerable to damage that

allows moisture in and fi bers out. If permitted inside the duct at all, fi berglass typically requires expensive encapsulating fi lm and dual metal walls to contain the fi bers.

A safer, more sustainable and more cost effective solution exists: Armacell elastomeric foam duct liners. Many of the technical features and advantages of the world’s most specifi ed pipe insulations are available now as problem-solving, value-adding duct liners – at a fraction of a building’s cost.

Because there’s a new world of opportunity with air ducts.

It’s Safe – and Smart – to Properly Insulate Ducts for Higher Performance!

Only Armacell fi ber-free elastomeric foam duct liners provide these all-inclusive solutions:

✔ A Higher Level of Protection against Energy Waste

• Support LEED, ASHRAE 90.1 and IECC

• R-4.2 at 1˝… R-6 at 1-1/2˝… R-8 at 2˝

• Will not lose thermal effectiveness due to long-term compaction or erosion, unlike fi berglass

✔ A Higher Level of Protection for the Indoor Environment

• Fiber-free

• Exclusive built-in EPA-registered Microban® antimicrobial protection to inhibit spread of mold

• Low VOC and formaldehyde-free

• Nonparticulating and will not erode, crack, fl ake or delaminate under increased air velocity

• “Plenum rated”: Meets 25/50 fi re and smoke ratings

✔ A Higher Level of Protection against Background Noise

• AP Coilfl ex Acoustic Duct Liner provides excellent sound absorption (NRC 0.60)

• All AP products provide superior noise blocking (Sound Transmission Class 25)

• Superior ability to dampen HVAC vibration and metal duct rattle

✔ PLUS: A Higher Level of Cost Savings – immediate and long-term!

• AP Coilfl ex eliminates added expense, time and labor in dual wall duct fabrication

– Unlike fi berglass, DOES NOT require expensive encapsulating fi lm to contain any fi bers – fi lm that is immediately compromised during the pinning process, exposing fi bers and reducing thermal performance if moisture intrudes – Eliminates the need for inner metal wall with rectangular duct – Compressibility and non-fi brous composition make it far easier to handle, roll and slide into the outer jacket in spiral duct assembly

• Durable elastomeric foam provides sustainability that can signifi cantly reduce total life cycle costs

• When fi berglass gets damaged or wet, it must be removed immediately to prevent mold infestation

After the specs are written, and the building’s built... who lives with the consequences of improperly insulated or uninsulated ducts?Very simply, the building owners and occupants. • Higher energy costs due to ineffi cient systems that lose btu’s somewhere between the HVAC equipment and occupant spaces

• Loss of thermal effi ciency with fi berglass due to compaction caused by long-term settling of the fi bers, compression at corners when wrapped around rectangular ducts, or moisture intrusion

• Sick buildings due to poor IAQ and spread of mold spores and allergens

• Reduced productivity due to distracting noise that undermines concentration, intrudes on adjoining spaces and increases stress levels

• Higher absenteeism (which can directly impact school funding)

• Higher costs for maintenance, removal and replacement

The next-generation, all-inclusive duct insulation With the introduction of patent-pending AP Coilfl ex, even price is no longer a viable argument against elastomeric foam duct lining for energy effi ciency, sustainability and the indoor environment.

• Uniquely fl exible and conformable for easier, labor-friendly fabrication: – The only elastomeric foam duct liner engineered for coiling lines – Quick, gap-free, no-bulge bending on brake presses – Less cutting in hand assembly applications

• Highest acoustic values of any elastomeric insulation: NRC 0.60 sound absorption, STC 25 noise blocking

• Up-front material and labor savings because there are no fi bers to contain: Eliminates costly encapsulating fi lms and the inner metal wall in rectangular ducts

Armacell Duct Liners...

Do Armacell Duct Liners support LEED?

Yes. Thermal properties meet requirements of ASHRAE 90.1 and International Energy Conservation Code R-Value 4.2 at 1˝ thickness and R-8 at 2 ˝ (AP Armafl ex). Additional thicknesses can earn added LEED credits, AP Coilfl ex might earn added credits for innovation, and credit can be earned for use of local/regional materials and resources.

Do they provide a higher level of protection for Indoor Environment (Air) Quality?

Yes. All Armacell AP insulation products have always been fi ber-free, low VOC, formaldehyde-free, nonparticulating (non-eroding) and inherently mold resistant.

Do AP Coilfl ex and AP Armafl ex pass Air Erosion Testing?

Yes, in certifi ed independent testing according to ASTM C 1071. AP Coilfl ex, for example, was subjected to Test Velocity 10,000 fpm of air fl ow (2.5 times the 4,000 fpm rating). There was no erosion, and no evidence of cracking, fl aking, peeling or delamination.

Are AP Duct Liners better than fi berglass at reducing HVAC noise?

Yes, primarily because they provide superior performance in two ways that are largely overlooked but absolutely critical for controlling HVAC system noise. First, they provide superior noise blocking (Sound Transmission Class 25), because the elastomeric foam creates a barrier that reduces noise passing through the duct wall. Second, the increased weight compared to lightweight fi berglass provides exceptional vibration dampening, minimizing HVAC metal duct rattle.

Will the antimicrobial treatment remain effective?

Yes, because it will not wear off or wash away. The Microban protection is not a topical treatment; it is integrated into AP Duct Liners during manufacturing. AP products already met UL and ASTM requirements for resisting mold, fungi and bacteria; Armacell began adding EPA-approved Microban treatment for a higher level of security for facility owners.

Can AP products be safely pinned or punctured?

Yes, they retain their performance if pinned or if the surface is accidentally torn. There are no fi bers to escape into the air stream and no loss in thermal effi ciency.

Are AP Duct Liners proven on-the-job?

Yes, for over a decade. Armacell can provide published job stories of AP Duct Liners performing in a wide range of building types. The technology is proven.

Are AP products approved for air plenums?

Yes, all AP products are 25/50-rated for fl ame spread and smoke generation. In addition, AP Duct Liners meet National Fire Protection Association 90A and 90B requirements for Duct Linings and Coverings.

“Porous materials such as internal fi brous glass liner have been identifi ed as a major source of fungal contamination.”

About Armacell Duct Liners

The best choice for many applications...

Healthcare... Public Spaces... Education...

Data Centers, Government/Military Buildings, and all facilities that demand indoor environmental quality!

Why Insulate Ducts?• Buildings consume 40% of all energy in the U.S., yet many commercial ducts are improperly or under-insulated. ➀• HVAC insulation has the potential to yield $900 million in energy savings and the reduction of 4.3M metric tons of CO2. ➁• Indoor air quality contributes to the well being and performance of occupants, according to both the Environmental

Protection Agency and the World Health Organization – and building owners have a responsibility to protect it. ➂

The air distribution system is key to that protection.• Studies have proven that noise impacts productivity, learning and stress. “As many as one-third of children may be disadvantaged by

excessive noise...” in their classroom. ➃ Air ducts transport noise from mechanical systems, and generate their own noise (HVAC rumble and rattle).
