In 1968, King was planning a national occupation of Washington, D.C., to be called the Poor People's Campaign, whenhe was assassinated by James Earl Ray on April 4 in Memphis, Tennessee.

King was booked in Room 306 at the Lorraine Motel (owned by Walter Bailey) in Memphis. Abernathy, who was presentat the assassination, testified to the United States House Select Committee on Assassinations that King and hisentourage stayed at Room 306 so often that it was known as the "King-Abernathy suite.

King was fatally shot by James Earl Ray at 6:01 p.m., April 4, 1968, as he stood on the motel's second-floor balcony.

King's death was followed by riots in many U.S. cities. Ray, who fled the country, was arrested two months later atLondon Heathrow Airport. Ray was sentenced to 99 years in prison for King's murder, and died in 1998 from hepatitiswhile serving his sentence.

The Lorraine Motel, where King was assassinated, is now the site of the National Civil Rights Museum.

At L. C. Humes High School, Presley received only a C in music in eighth grade. When his music teacher told him he hadno aptitude for singing, he brought in his guitar the next day and sang a recent hit, "Keep Them Cold Icy Fingers OffMe", in an effort to prove otherwise. A classmate later recalled that the teacher "agreed that Elvis was right when hesaid that she didn't appreciate his kind of singing".

After Elvis Presley died in 1977, his funeral was held at Graceland on Thursday, August 18. Outside the gates, a carplowed into a group of fans, killing two women and critically injuring a third. About 80,000 people lined the processionalroute to Forest Hill Cemetery, where Presley was buried next to his mother. Within a few days, "Way Down" topped thecountry and UK pop charts. Following an attempt to steal the singer's body in late August, the remains of both Presleyand his mother were reburied in Graceland's Meditation Garden on October 2.

In March1935, when American music icon Johnny Cash was three years old, the family settled in Dyess, Arkansas, a New Dealcolony established to give poor families a chance to work land that they had a chance to own as a result. J.R., as he wasknown as a child, started working in his father's cotton fields at the age of five, singing along with his family whileworking. The family farm was flooded on at least two occasions, which inspired his song "Five Feet High and Rising". Helived there until he graduated from high school in 1950.
