Registration InsuranceRequirements

You will be required to obtain proper Arkansas insurance when you go to register your vehicle. This is a necessary requirement in order to help reduce the number of uninsured drivers on the road which can often result in high costs if you are involved in any vehicle accident.

Your insurance company will issue your proof of insurance by providing you an Arkansas insurance ID card. When you go to register your vehicle you will need to have it insured. By signing the vehicle registration application you are asserting that your vehicle is properly insured in the state of Arkansas.

In order to be able to apply for your vehicle registration, it will be mandatory that you obtain liability insurance before you are allowed to register and legally drive it. What is the purpose of liability insurance? If you are involved in a car accident, it is important that any and all damages or injuries you cause someone else can be paid for without causing you financial difficulty.

Minimum Vehicle Liability Insurance Policy:

accepted. The insurance plan must be valid even when your vehicle is no longer in use. Every month, the DMV office will verify that your vehicle is properly insured according to the Arkansas DMV requirements. If your information does not return verified from the insurance company, you may face fines and the possible suspension of your vehicle registration.

Therefore, in the event that you are pulled over by a police officer and you are unable to provide proof insurance even though you do hold the necessary vehicle insurance required by the state of Arkansas, you will face a traffic citation along with a $50 fine. However, if you are do not hold any of the required vehicle insurance policies you may be exposed to further fines and suspensions.

TipIf you have any questions or concerns regarding having your driver license suspended due to lack of vehicle insurance in Arkansas, make sure to contact the Arkansas DMV at 501-682-4692 or the DFA Insurance Verification Program at 501-682-7932.

VehicleSafety Tips

The most important thing before you begin driving any vehicle is that both you and the vehicle are well prepared for any trip you make. This means checking and making any changes to your vehicle or your behavior to make sure that you are able to drive safely at all times.

Emergency KitOne of the essentials to safe driving is having a basic emergency kit available in your vehicle at all times. This kit should include basic items like water, extra batteries, rope, a first aid kit, matches and a whistle. During winter months, it is also important to carry items, such as blankets, non-perishable foods, extra gloves, socks and a shovel.

Page 20 | Car-Reg.org

WINTER DRIVINGOne of the most dangerous times to drive is during the winter, especially if you live in an area that snows. Therefore, it is best to consider these tips to drive safely during the winter.

Do not Rush

Roads are often covered in snow and ice in the winter. Instead of driving fast and risking an accident in your rush to get to your destination, try leaving earlier than usual. This will allow you to take your time and avoid hazards, like snow and ice.

Do not Panic if You Skid or Slip

In the case that your vehicle does skid or slip while driving, make sure you do not panic and slam on your brakes. Instead, apply slow and even pressure on your brakes until you stop. This will prevent you from spinning out of control.

Check Your Vehicle

Before you even leave your house make sure your vehicle’s controls, brakes, tank, tires, antifreeze, exhaust, etc. are all working properly. It is also important that you remove all ice and snow from your car before you begin driving. This prevents the snow from blocking your view while you drive.

Page 21 | Car-Reg.org

Page 22: Arkansas Car Registration...24-Hour Emergency Roadside Assistance Benefits 24-Hour Towing Service 24-Hour Mechanical First Aid 24-Hour Tire Change Service Customers are covered for

Drinking and DrivingEvery year thousands are killed as a result of drinking and driving. This is can be prevented if drivers take the necessary precautions.

Even before you begin drinking, you should arrange for someone else to be the designated driver. In the case that they also become intoxicated, it is important that you arrange to take a taxi. Never allow someone drunk to drive. Instead, take away his or her keys and call for alternative transportation.

Be aware of the signs of drunk driving. These include making wide turns, weaving, swerving, braking erratically and turning abruptly. If you see someone who you suspect is driving while intoxicated, call 9-11 as soon as soon as you can safely do so. Make sure to note the vehicle’s license plate number. Also do your best to avoid the vehicle on the road to ensure your own safety.

Using your PhoneDriving while using your cellphone is one of the most dangerous things you can do because during those few seconds your attention is diverted to your phone, a major accident could occur. Make sure you do not text, browse, or receive calls while you drive to prevent accidents from happening.

Things to AvoidDriving is an activity that requires your full attention. There are certain actions and behaviors that can be dangerous to you while on the road driving. Other habits can cause you to waste money or damage your car. If you make sure to take the necessary precautions and stop bad habits when they occur, you can make driving a safe experience.

Car Accidents

The best way to avoid car accidents is to ensure that your vehicle is safe to drive and will not cause you any problems. To do this you only need to regularly check that your brakes are functioning properly, your tires are properly inflated and have sufficient tread and that the steering and

suspensions are in proper order. Make sure to take your car for regular maintenance to ensure proper performance.

Wasting Gas

As the price of gas goes up, you may begin to start looking for ways to save on those expensive trips to the pump. Saving money on gas is something that is possible if you take a few steps towards ensuring that you waste less gas.

Some of the ways you can start saving gas include not using air conditioning, not leaving your engine running and not driving faster than 60 miles per hour. These things are preventable and not necessary for you to drive, so you can quickly reduce the amount of gas you waste.

Another way to save on gas is to make sure that your vehicle is functioning properly, you can do this by checking that your tires are properly inflated, your engine is well tuned and your octane level is the correct amount for your vehicle’s needs.

Aggressive Driving

Aggressive driving and drivers should be avoided to prevent any on-road aggression or accidents. Aggressive driving is categorized by behaviors, such as aggressive tailgating, verbally or physically harassing another driver and preventing another driver from merging or passing.

If you are an aggressive driver, you are putting others at risk every time you do any of the above behaviors. If you encounter a frustrating situation on the road, instead of becoming aggressive, take a moment to breathe and relax before moving on.
