Affordable luxury ... a priority for Aussie travellers contending with a more volatile dollar.Source: ThinkStockAFFORDABLE luxury may sound like a contradiction in terms, but new research has found it ispossible to get five-star quality for a good price even with the weaker Australian dollar.

Searches undertaken by Hotels.com (http://au.hotels.com/) have come up with the top ten cities where theaverage cost of a five-star hotel averages less than AU$250 per night.

The only downside is anyone contemplating booking the hotels will have to find the money for airfaresranging from AU$750 to AU$1760 return.

The cheapest city at an average $147 a night was also the furtherest away. Warsaw in Poland costsaround AU$1750 return in airfares but the upside is Aussie travellers can book a room at the five-starHotel Bristol for not much more than a youth hostel — at around AU$130 a night.

Another plus is the Australian dollar is worth the equivalent of nearly three Polish Zlotny making thewhole country a good value option for visitors from down under.

Second on the list was Mumbai in India, where the average room rate for first-class hotels is AU$187 anight. Among the choices for visitors are the Sofitel Mumbai BKC in the expanding business district ofBandra where palatial suites cost around AU$204 a night.

New Delhi also made the list with an average room cost of $198 a night, just a tad more expensive thanBangkok ($197) which had the added advantage of being regularly featured in airline sales fromAustralia.

The LaLit New Delhi offers rooms from as little as $164, including breakfast, or there’s the sprawlingAnantara Bangkok Riverside Resort and Spa for an average $203. Stretching over four hectares alongthe Chao Phraya River, the resort boasts ten dining options as well as tropical pools and a free rivershuttle.

The Australian dollar is worth around 48 Indian rupees, and 25 Thai baht.

Lisbon in Portugal rounded out the top five best value cities, with five-star properties averaging just over$200 a night despite a euro costing around $1.39 Australian. Among the cheapest on offer, the TivoliLisboa has prime position on the Avenida da Liberdade and rooms from $187 Australian a night.

Regional Director for the Hotels.com (http://www.hotels.com) brand, Katherine Cole said affordable luxurywas important to Aussie travellers.

“Many Australians work hard all year round, and it’s important they have the opportunity to relax and takea lavish holiday that doesn’t break the bank,” said Ms Cole.

“As the Hotels.com Hotels Price Index shows, Asia is really hitting the mark when it comes to offeringgreat value money for luxe hotels.”
