PALM BEACH OPERA 6
Dear Palm Beach Opera Patrons:
Thank you for joining us for the last opera production of the 2016 season – and what a terrific season this has been! From the record setting Opera @ The Waterfront concert, to nearly sold-out Carmen and Gala with Diana Damrau performances, and most recently, the critically acclaimed hilarious Don Pasquale weekend. We’re thrilled that you are a part of our opera family and greatly appreciate your support in making this an outstanding opera season!
Thanks to the generosity of many of you, we are close to successfully meeting the Executive Committee’s $100,000 Matching Challenge Grant, which will help us close the remaining financial gap for this season. We are most grateful to all of you who have already made a gift to the Matching Grant! We are working hard to end the 2016 season with a balanced budget, and I urge all others to join your fellow opera lovers in making an investment to support one of our programs. I promise you the greatest of all returns on your investment – the satisfaction of knowing that you have made a difference in the life of a child through an education program, in the life of an artist by becoming an artist or production sponsor, or in the life of one of your fellow residents by making opera available, accessible and affordable for all.
Based on the initial reactions to our season announcements and subscription renewals, the 2017 season operas are extremely popular. The 2017 season will create fantastic forward momentum to excite our existing audience and to build new audiences. The success of the company, however, will remain rooted in the support of the whole community. The involvement of each of you is critically important to secure the future of Palm Beach Opera. I urge you to play a significant part in Palm Beach Opera’s success, and I hope you will encourage your friends to join you.
As our 2016 season is starting to wind down, it is with great gratitude to all of you that I address you for the last time as your Chairman. I have tremendously enjoyed leading the Board of Directors and the opera company for the past four years. The second year of my second term will be up in May, and a new Chairman will lead the Board and the company starting with the 2017 season.
Thank you for your love of opera, for your continued enthusiasm, and for your past, current and future investment in this incredible Opera Company. Have a wonderful summer season and I look forward to seeing you next season again at the opera!

PALM BEACH OPERA 8
Dear Palm Beach Opera Friends:
Thank you for joining us for the third and sadly already last opera of the 2016 season. I hope you enjoyed our two mainstage productions so far, and also made some new opera friends along the way. We all very much appreciate your continued patronage, and are thrilled to count you among the Palm Beach Opera family.
I’m particularly grateful that you are here for Ariadne auf Naxos. It’s a real gem, a highpoint of German comic opera
combining Strauss’ talent of writing soaring, lush melodies in the opera proper with a conversational and fast paced prologue. Allow yourself to go along with their journey, and you will be amply rewarded in the second half of the evening with the most exquisite combination of Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s literary greatness and Richard Strauss’ musical genius. The opera has such a ‘purifying’ aspect that, if you permit yourself to delve into the world of our various characters and their character development, you will come out a better and more well rounded human!
We hope to see you at our Liederabend and the Guild’s Palm Beach Opera Goes Broadway Cabaret Style, and look forward to a terrific 2017 season! I thank all of you subscribers who have already renewed your seats for next year. Madama Butterfly, Rigoletto and The Pirates of Penzance are sure to sell out, so I encourage all others to get the best seats at the best prices now. Having a plentiful subscriber family creates a solid financial and emotional foundation for Palm Beach Opera. Thank you in addition to those of you who have contributed toward our 2016 Matching Challenge Grant. Your support directly affects the quality of our productions and programs, and impacts the cultural well-being of the entire community.
As our season is coming to a close, I’d also like to thank all members of our Board of Directors, in particular the Executive Committee, our Board of Governors, and the Guild for all their leadership and support during the 2016 season. All groups are happy to welcome new members, are eager to hear your ideas, and look forward to working together with you to create a strong, rewarding future for Palm Beach Opera.
Enjoy Ariadne auf Naxos, and have a wonderful time until we see each other again at Madama Butterfly.

THE PROLOGUE
THE OPERA
The servants of the richest man in Vienna are busy preparing the stage for a performance in their master’s palace. Behind the scenes, the two troupes hired for the occasion are making their preparations: one troupe is to present the premiere of the opera Ariadne auf Naxos, the first opus of a young composer. The other is to present a dance masquerade in the Italian commedia dell’arte style. The mutual jealousy between the members of the two troupes causes emotions to run high, especially when the host, represented by his Majordomo, announces an unexpected and incomprehensible programme change: at his wish, the two performances will not
take place consecutively, but are to be presented simultaneously to the invited guests. Deeply distressed, the Composer is concerned about the accurate realization of his artistic vision and wants to withdraw his creation from its first public performance. However, the pragmatic Music Teacher and the actress Zerbinetta, who is adept in all the skills of seduction, persuade him to change his mind. With an emphatic hymn to music (“Sein wir wieder gut”), the Composer bows to reality and the instructions of his patron. He agrees that the opera Ariadne auf Naxos will be performed accordingly, with interludes by the commedia troupe.
In front of a cave on the beaches of the island of Naxos, Ariadne awaits her death. She has been deserted by Theseus, who had become her lover after she helped him defeat Minotaur. Ariadne does not pay attention to anything around her: not the three nymphs, not the comedians who try to cheer her up, and not even Zerbinetta, who advises the grieving Ariadne not to shed a tear over her vanished lover, but to be open to new love (“Als ein Gott kam jeder
gegangen”). A radiant youth approaches from afar: Bacchus, the god of eternal renewal. He has just fled from the arms of the enchantress Circe, having resisted her magic spells. Ariadne, taking him for a messenger of death, goes to meet him and gradually becomes inflamed with an ecstatic passion that is reciprocated by the god. Each is transformed by the other, and as if reborn, Ariadne and Bacchus conclude the opera as a mystically united couple.

PALM BEACH OPERA 17
THE BACKGROUNDAriadne auf Naxos was Richard Strauss’ sixth opera. After a successful partnership with Hugo von Hofmannsthal on Der Rosenkavalier, the duo teamed up to create a comedy. When Ariadne auf Naxos debuted in 1912 (Stuttgart), the opera was preceded by Moliere’s play Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme; this created a very long evening that the audience did not appreciate. After an unsuccessful opening,
Strauss and Hofmannsthal went back to the drawing board and, in 1916 (Vienna), delivered Ariadne auf Naxos as we see the opera presented today.
Interesting fact: Ariadne auf Naxos is scored for only 36 chamber players, one-third the size of orchestra for which Strauss typically composed.
STORY SYNOPSIS
DANIEL WITZKE,DIRECTOR
Ariadne is a play-within-a-play, the first act serving as prologue to the second, which is the opera “Ariadne
auf Naxos” melded with farce. The story is fraught with issues of class, culture, and the nature of love: A composer and a music master nervously await the premiere of their opera, “Ariadne auf Naxos,” which has been commissioned by the wealthiest man in town to entertain his guests. It is high art, a serious German opera about the daughter of King Minos of Crete. The man’s assistant (a speaking role) informs them that the opera will be followed by a musical comedy, in other words low art, and they are outraged. It gets worse when they learn that the two must be performed together since fireworks begin promptly at 9:00 pm. Zerbinetta, the star of the comedy, struts her stuff and is ogled by her four companions. She almost wins over the composer, but he stands firm against melding the shows.
As the second act begins, Ariadne mourns her abandonment by Theseus, a Greek hero whom she has rescued from the Minotaur, her father’s ultimate weapon. Zerbinetta tries to cheer her up, as do the four comedians. Ariadne will not be comforted, but awaits only death in her cave on the island. Joining her in mourning is a cluster of nymphs. Bacchus, who has been wandering aimlessly, arrives and Ariadne welcomes him as the messenger of death. Realizing that she will go with him even to death, Bacchus is transformed into a god and they depart together. Zerbinetta observes this without understanding, saying in effect, “I told you so,” meaning that all Ariadne needed was a new lover.
Ariadne auf Naxos indeed is all of that and more: A tender look into the true condition of the human soul, a high-paced comedy, and a poetic, mystical, and at times dreamlike journey surrounded by irresistibly lush music that will capture your heart and leave you with a feeling of utter completeness. It put a spell on me many years ago. And so it will on you.

His legacy will live on by supporting vocal and dramatic training of the next generation of opera singers.

DR. & MRS. CHARLES TAGER
If you were to introduce a friend to opera, why would you encourage them to attend the opera?
There is no substitute for live opera. We have been attending Palm Beach Opera since we moved to South Florida.
We are grateful for your support for Palm Beach Opera. Would you please share why you support Palm Beach Opera?
We believe that Palm Beach Opera is an integral and essential part of our cultural life. Palm Beach Opera has gotten better and better each season.
Is there anything else you would like to share about opera or Palm Beach Opera?
