September arrived and brought with it some of the hottest temperatures we've seen all

summer. Labor Day weekend was a huge success for the club, our pool, tennis courts and golf

course were packed. The long weekend was kicked off with the best crab feast in Argyle

history where we hammered down 25 bushels of jumbo crabs from Shoreline Seafood. Other

great food including oysters, clams, BBQ chicken, burgers, dogs, sausage with peppers &

onions, hush puppies and deserts were also on the menu. Flying Dog pitched a tent and

provided ice cold draft beer and there was a full service bar for those interested. No one left

hungry or thirsty. Saturday, Sunday, and Monday were hot and humid and when outdoor fun

was done for the day, members enjoyed great food, ice cold drinks and the best service in

town in the 1945 Grille. .

The course has healed beautifully following the aerification last month, it has been a great

year overall. We are working hard to keep up with the rough as it continues to grow like

crazy. We have installed additional drainage along the back of #8 tee which should dry it out

and improve the quality.

We had a great meeting earlier this month which included representation from each

department of the club: greens, swim, membership, social, facilities, tennis and golf. The

purpose of the meeting was to finalize a master list of departmental needs for the future.

During the meeting, we discussed the process of how capital dollars are spent at the Club

and how the Board determines what projects will be approved. Like any household, we have

limited dollars to spend and we have to prioritize where the dollars are spent each year.

Below are the rankings for how the Board determines where each dollar should go.

1. What management needs to operate the club, for example, HVAC units, ovens,

exterior paint, computer equipment etc… things we need to run the facility on a day

to day basis.

2. Safety or compliance issues we need to address, for example, tripping hazards in the

old staging area, pot holes, pool drains etc…

3. How will each project increase member satisfaction and retention along with

increasing membership growth opportunities?

4. Aesthetics – If the item is functional but could be refreshed, for example lobby and

locker room furniture?

We have made many great improvements over the past few years and we will continue to

listen to each committee’s recommendations moving forward.

The mood around the club continues to be positive and enthusiastic. As school is back in

session, many of our summer employees have said goodbye. I would like to thank all of the

employees for their hard work this summer in making Argyle a truly enjoyable place to be. It

is great to see our members and guests enjoying the club as much as they have this summer.

If you know of any friends, family members, poker buddies, neighbors or anyone else that

would make a great addition to our club, now is a great time bring them out to see what

everyone is talking about. Please let me know and I will personally arrange a tour with our

Membership Director, Stephanie Meinhardt.

My favorite part about being Membership Director is seeing the

cooperation and effort from all of the members in this club toward

recruiting new members.

As you already know, a referral is the highest honor a club can receive

from a member. If you know someone that you think would be the right

fit for your club and would recognize the great benefits that Argyle has to

offer, I would love to hear all about them. Send me an email, give me a

call or fill out a membership referral form with your prospective

member’s name, number and email.

When I receive your referral, I will provide them with a membership

packet and invite them to experience the Argyle that we all know and

love, whether it is offering them a free round of golf on our beautiful

course, or a free dinner in our relaxing restaurant. Let’s all work

together and make this fall a great season for member recruitment.

Local is the new black. These days, food we eat travels an average of 1,300 miles to

reach our tables and I am attempting to break the cycle. I have been looking into

Community Supported Agriculture or CSA. What this does is promote dialogue

between the farmers and the consumers which helps encourage a sense of

community. Participants or investors or shareholders, whichever term you like, get

to know exactly where their food comes from and have a vested interest in the land

their food is raised on and the growers who handle it. The CSA brings consumers

and farmers together in a relationship of mutual support when each member makes a

tangible commitment to support the farm throughout the season. In return, members

receive a weekly box of fresh, local, sustainable, environmentally-sound produce from

late spring though early fall. The partnership allows the farmer to provide a wide

variety of produce of the highest quality while keeping costs at or below supermarket

prices. I am really pushing toward this “fresh” movement and I think that this is

something that will set Argyle Country Club member dining above the rest. I am

always open to feedback. ([email protected]) Thanks for your support!

Kudos to our around-the-town winners. Stef Herndon and Lisa Splaine both qualified

for the championship flight of the Women’s District of Columbia Golf Association

(WDCGA). Unfortunately, they had to play each other in the first round. Stef won

what was a rematch of their Argyle Women’s Championship final. Stef then went on

to win more matches and found herself in the final. We are proud she went so far al-

though she lost so narrowly in the final.

Shortly after winning the Mixed Club Championship with husband Phil, Jane Curtin

was all warmed up for a career low. As described by Carol Davies “Playing today in

the WDCGA Anniversary Tournament at Bethesda C.C., Jane shot her career round,

a 1-under par 71. This round included seven birdies. Jane birdied her first four holes.

On her final 18th hole she flew her sand wedge into the cup after two bounces for her

final birdie of the day. It was quite a spectacular display of golf by one of our own. By

the way, our team won the tournament!”. Team members included Jan Calomaris

from Congressional, Lisa Splaine and Carol Davies.

In a Maryland Women’s Division tournament at Musket Ridge, Maggie Whall and

Sharon Burlas emerged as runners up in their division.

The results of the Lieze Moffett 36-hole Medal Tournament were:

Low Net - Jen Hicks & Carol Davies

Low Gross - Carol Davies

Ringer - Kathy Musser

Carol shot a 74 on Saturday and Jen broke 90 for the first time in an 18-hole round at

Argyle. Way to go Carol and Jen!

Congratulations to July tournament winners! Winners in the Two-lady Tournament

were:

Overall - Stef Herdon & Diane Herndon

Format Winners -Laura MacDonough & Gail Kullman

Better Ball - Maggie Whall & Melly Tucker

Pinehurst - Ivy Holsey & LeeAnn Jensen

Scramble - Anne DuMont and Jen Hicks.

The Grandmothers Tournament was won by Arlene Ward, first low net, and Kathy

Musser, second low net. Ivy Holsey was the winner of a purple Nike golf bag in the

Rally for the Cure 17th Hole contest benefitting Susan G. Komen.

The Pinehurst (our last major tournament of the season) is open for play

Wednesday, September 10th through Sunday, September 14th. This

tournament is an 18-hole event with a partner. See the online tournament book for

details. The sign-up sheet is in the tournament book in the Golf Shop. Please be sure

to sign-up in advance so that your tournament scorecard will be available. Upon

completion of your tournament round, remember to sign your scorecard and obtain

the marker’s signature. The completed scorecard should be placed in the tournament

box in the Golf Shop.

The AWGA is hosting a new mixer on Wednesday, September 17th, with a shotgun

start at 6:00 P.M. Come out and play a few holes (how many will depend on day

light). Format is to be determined but we promise it will be fun! Non-AWGA

members are welcome as well. We are all skill levels so don't be shy!

The Solheim Cup is scheduled for Saturday, September 20th and Sunday, Sep-

tember 21st. This is a two day, 36-hole, team match play event. The teams are

co-captained by ACC golf professionals and the Herndons. Formats for play will be

better ball, Pinehurst, scramble and singles. A prize will be awarded to each member

of the winning team. There will be a casual reception following the conclusion of the

tournament. The entry fee for this event is $50.00 which includes the cost of the

reception. To participate in the Solheim Cup you must sign up by Wednesday,

September 17th. Ladies signing up after the Septmeber 17th deadline will be

admitted to the field only as space permits. The sign-up sheet is in the tournament

book in the Golf Shop.

Everyone stay in town! We’ve been having September weather through July and

August. What will September bring? And October? Usually our best month!

Born and raised in Montgomery County, Maryland, Jordan started working at Argyle in October of 2013. She is

currently enrolled at Bowie State University and will be graduating in May 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in

marketing.

Jordan landed her first paid internship with Enterprise Holdings this summer, which is one the largest rental car

companies in the today’s market - a great accomplishment!

Jordan has three goals that are most important to her:

-be one of 6 adults on her mother’s side of the family to graduate from college

-obtain a job in her field of study and receive her first promotion within two years of working for the company

-be able to help support her mother and father financially once they retire to help relieve the stresses that accompany

retirement age

In her spare time, Jordan loves to play and referee soccer, her favorite sport she started

playing at the age of six. Jordan also played on a traveling club team and spent four years

as a varsity starter in high school. When she isn't playing the game, she enjoys watching it

on ESPN. Her two favorite hobbies are watching sports and playing Xbox.

At Argyle, Jordan enjoys the different interactions with the members. “The members are

very friendly and have very great personality, which makes it easier to want to come to

work an do your best job,” Jordan says. “I also have learned a lot since starting at Argyle

about the customer service industry, especially when it comes to food services and

relating it back to my studies in school as well.”

Congratulations to Jordan Washington for earning Employee of the Month - a prize well-

earned for consistently providing the highest level of service to our members.
