UK’s global competitiveness depends o
the continued exibility of labour mark
PROFESSIONAL recruitment firms haveseen a nine per cent annual increase intemporary placements for 2015 and a four percent increase in permanent placements.
This is according to new survey data fromthe Association of Professional StaffingCompanies (APSCo) and Staffing IndustryAnalysts (SIA). This is in line with the latest
data from the Office for National Statistics(ONS), which reveals that overall employ-ment levels increased by over half a millionyear on year.
The growth in demand for a professionalflexible workforce is underlined by PWC’slatest Future of Work Report – which re-vealed that almost half of HR professionals
expect at least 20 per cent of their workforceto be made up of contractors or temporaryworkers by 2020, with almost a third sayingthat talent management strategies are beingbuilt around the growth of portfolio careers.
Ann Swain, chief executive of APSCo said:“The UK’s reliance on the flexible workforceshows no sign of abating and it is clear thatUK economic growth and global competitive-ness depends on the continued flexibility of its labour market.
“The professional recruitment sector is anincreasingly vital element of that flexiblemarket as demand for talent intensifies. As the pace of technology increases, fluidlabour will become vital. The nature of workis changing and the employment landscape isno longer made up of a homogeneous groupbut now contains many different types of engagement and motivations for workingoutside the traditional employed model.”
Salaries showing gradual but steady growthAPSCo’s figures also reveal that mediansalaries across all professional sectors con-tinue to hold steady with a rise of 4.6 per centcompared with 2014.
There are fluctuations dependent on sectorsuch as the big uptick in financial servicespay, but most professional sectors showed
increases such as sales (6.2 per cenneering (3.7 per cent); IT (2.4 per cmarketing (0.6 per cent).
Ann Swain, chief executive of Aadded: “It’s clear that, in many prsectors, skill shortages are still acing in upward pressure on pay levgrowth in salaries is obviously goagainst a backdrop of historicallytion.
